Knox asks Barron, then, if his son Henry Jackson Knox could be an acting Lieutenant with the emoluments only of a midshipman.

Book excerpt: Knox explains to Williams the situation surround Henry Jackson Knox and his refusal to accept midshipman status after being refused promotion to lieutenant. Knox's son appears to have no proper value for money, and is therefore very extravagant. Knox thought the Navy would help straighten his son out, but now Knox fears his son will be involved in a course of errors and vices which may overwhelm him. Knox asks Williams to take him on and help Henry Jackson Knox overcome his weaknesses. Knox is afraid his son's love of gambling has left a considerable debt that Knox cannot pay. Knox prefers that his son rejoin the Navy, but if that is not possible, Knox thinks it would be best if son travel to Maine to be with his parents. Henry Jackson Knox should travel by water and not land because land travel would be more expensive and he would be too distracted by bad company and tempted to stray if went by land. If President Adams is still in Philadelphia and Williams thinks it is appropriate to consult him on this matter, Knox consents to allow Williams to do so.

Fears that you and his other friends may think that he ought to be in a higher grade, but it is not possible. Asks King to find out if the nephew is still interested. Heard from Ralph Izard that he (Izard) gave King a pamphlet on the [Yazoo] Company. Asks King and Doctor William Samuel Johnson to send him documents on the sale, as well as pamphlets relative to the title. Large parts of pages two and three are struck, and in this section, Knox mentions the history of land ownership in the Carolinas and Georgia. As this issue will doubtlessly come up at the next session of Congress, Knox wants to have as much information as possible, and does not know who else to ask but King.

Nearly three months elapsed between the time Congress ought to have been and the time it was actually formed. Adds, I have written you an official letter respecting some troops I have ordered to Springfield. Discusses where these troops are currently stationed, and how they will arrive at Springfield. Urges him to keep your attention fixed on the Stores and to afford them as ample protection as your force will admit, and the case may require. Mentions the variety of rumors he has heard regarding the status of Lincoln's regiment, but has heard that Generals [Rufus] Putnam and [Benjamin] Tupper are with him and if so, sends his regards to them.

During the war, Nathanael Greene had made a contract with merchant John Banks to supply clothing and provisions for the Southern Army, and Knox seeks to prove Greene was not a business partner with Banks. Says that some have alleged Burnett had evidence of Greene's partnership with Banks, through the papers of his son Ichabod Burnet, who had been Greene's aide during the war. Asks whether he had such evidence, and if Greene truly asked him to destroy it.
