Download or read book Kritzerland written by Bruce Kimmel and published by Author House. This book was released on 2003-04-23 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten-year-old Benjamin Kritzer is back. Having survived his Martian parents (thus far), having survived a broken heart (when the nine-year-old love of his life, Susan Pomeroy, moved to Canada), and having survived the Bad Men, Benjamin has a whole new slew of adventures to deal with in Kritzerland. They include the horrifying prospect of going to junior high school (and the more-horrifying prospect of having to wear a jockstrap in Gym class), visiting the new amusement park, Pacific Ocean Park, where he finally gets to visit his parents' home planet on the Flight to Mars ride, meeting The Three Stooges, visiting a movie set at Paramount Studios, going to St. Louis, dealing with his psychotic brother and "What is it, fish?" grandfather, and, most importantly, meeting his first real friend, Paul Daley. The story of that close and endearing friendship is hilarious and touching, and the portrait of growing up in the magical city that was Los Angeles in the late 1950s is vivid and razor-sharp, and will make you feel like you've taken a time machine back to another wonderful, more innocent era.
Download or read book Balboa Films written by Jean-Jacques Jura and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1913 through 1918, Long Beach, California, was home to the largest independent film company in the world, the largely forgotten Balboa Studio. Founder Herbert M. Horkheimer bought the studio from Edison Company in 1913, and by 1915 Balboa's expenses exceeded $2,500 a day and its output hit 15,500 feet of film per week. Bert Bracken, Fatty Arbuckle, Henry King, Baby Marie Osborne, Thomas Ince, and William Desmond Taylor began their careers with the studio. In 1918, Horkheimer stunned the industry by declaring bankruptcy, shutting down Balboa, and walking away from moviemaking. The closing of the studio effectively ended Long Beach's runs as a major film location and left many wondering about the true reasons behind Horkheimer's decision. Most of Balboa's films have been lost, and little has until now been written about the studio. This book first explores the history of filmmaking in Long Beach and then fully details the story of Balboa. The extensive filmography includes length, copyright date when available, cast and credits, and a plot summary.

Book Synopsis The Good, the Bad and the Ancient by : Sue Matheson
Download or read book The Good, the Bad and the Ancient written by Sue Matheson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Americans are no longer compelled to learn Greek and Latin, classical ideals remain embedded in American law and politics, philosophy, oratory, history and especially popular culture. In the Western genre, many film and television directors (such as John Ford, Raoul Walsh, Howard Hawks, Anthony Mann and Sam Peckinpah) have drawn inspiration from antiquity, and the classical values and influences in their work have shaped our conceptions of the West for years. This thought-provoking, first-of-its-kind collection of essays celebrates, affirms and critiques the West's relationship with the classical world. Explored are films like Cheyenne Autumn, The Wild Bunch, The Track of the Cat, Trooper Hook, The Furies, Heaven's Gate, and Slow West, as well as serials like Gunsmoke and Lonesome Dove.
Book Synopsis Here's Looking at You by : Ernest D. Giglio
Download or read book Here's Looking at You written by Ernest D. Giglio and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its third edition, Here's Looking at You: Hollywood, Film and Politics examines the tangled relationship between politics and Hollywood, which manifests itself in celebrity involvement in political campaigns and elections, and in the overt and covert political messages conveyed by Hollywood films. The book's findings contradict the film industry's assertion that it is simply in the entertainment business, and examines how, while the majority of Hollywood films are strictly commercial ventures, hundreds of movies - ranging from Birth of a Nation to Capitalism - do indeed contain political messages. This new edition has been updated with new photos and cartoons, and includes two new chapters, one on Afghan-Iraqi war films and the other on the treatment of race and gender in Hollywood films, that are sure to stimulate discussion. Here's Looking at You serves as a basic text for political film courses and as a supplement in American government and film studies courses, and will also appeal to film buffs and people in the film industry.

This comprehensive reference work provides biographies and Western filmographies for nearly 1,000 men and women who have contributed to at least three "A" Westerns. These contributors are arranged by their role in film production. Cinematographers, composers, actors, actresses, and directors receive complete biographical treatment; writers whose work was used in at least two Westerns are also featured. An appendix lists well-known actors who have appeared in either one or two "A" Westerns, as specified.
