Book excerpt: Excerpt from Helping Farmers Build Cooperatives: The Evolution of Farmer Cooperative Service Mr. Abrahamsen has served with Farmer Cooperative Service and its predecessor organization, the Cooperative Research and Service Division, Farm Credit Administration, since 1949. Before that time he had 13 years' experience in teaching and research in agricultural cooperation at West Virginia University and North Carolina State College. Because of continuing responsibilities in a broad range of cooperative research and educational efforts, his experience well supplements that of Mr. Mckay when it comes to interpreting the implications of recent governmental programs with cooperatives and the efforts of these associations to provide assistance to the people they are organized to serve: This study has been made to provide a record of many develop ments which might otherwise be lost - to preserve the lessons of the past for the use of the present and future. It has been prepared primarily for research workers, teachers, cooperative leaders, and those of the general public who have an interest in and appreciation of the forces that have helped make farmer cooperatives what they are today. Book Synopsis Freedom Farmers by : Monica M. White
Download or read book Freedom Farmers written by Monica M. White and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2018-11-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1967, internationally renowned activist Fannie Lou Hamer purchased forty acres of land in the Mississippi Delta, launching the Freedom Farms Cooperative (FFC). A community-based rural and economic development project, FFC would grow to over 600 acres, offering a means for local sharecroppers, tenant farmers, and domestic workers to pursue community wellness, self-reliance, and political resistance. Life on the cooperative farm presented an alternative to the second wave of northern migration by African Americans--an opportunity to stay in the South, live off the land, and create a healthy community based upon building an alternative food system as a cooperative and collective effort. Freedom Farmers expands the historical narrative of the black freedom struggle to embrace the work, roles, and contributions of southern Black farmers and the organizations they formed. Whereas existing scholarship generally views agriculture as a site of oppression and exploitation of black people, this book reveals agriculture as a site of resistance and provides a historical foundation that adds meaning and context to current conversations around the resurgence of food justice/sovereignty movements in urban spaces like Detroit, Chicago, Milwaukee, New York City, and New Orleans.

Book Synopsis Make No Small Plans by : Lee Egerstrom
Download or read book Make No Small Plans written by Lee Egerstrom and published by Lone Oak Press, Limited. This book was released on 1994 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Make No Small Plans...is intended as a fresh call for cooperative action in rural America at the start of the new century. Failure to act will have catastrophic consequences for residents of rural towns and farmsteads. The world economy has changed dramatically. Governments have lost both the legal authority to intervene in farm markets and arbitrarily raise farm incomes by raising prices, and the budgetary means to do so. International trade agreements ban the former; political support and government budget priorities limit the latter... Modern agriculture, with its new sciences and new technologies, no longer needs many people to produce food and fiber crops... A declining farm population in turn reduces the need for rural retail services and for rural communities to serve as senior citizens centers... By accepting these premises, one must search for alternative actions... Rural communities, townspeople, workers, farmers, foresters, and tourism and hospitality people together must explore starting a new generation of cooperatives and new cooperative ventures"--Preface
