Book excerpt: Themes of Farewell to Follies (FTF) Nature, in the form of beautiful landscapes and wholesome surroundings, is a constant presence in FTFs short fiction. It is often the only thing in the text, animate or inanimate, that is described in a positive or laudatory fashion. FTF characters are great believes in the power of nature, both in terms of its beauty and its challenges, to improve ones quality of life. Tok Pisin Also a near-constant presence in FTFs stories is the theme of death, either in the form of death itself, the knowledge of the inevitability of death, or the futility of fleeing death. Clearly evocative of death are the stories in which FTF describes actual deaths. Terminate with Extreme Prejudic. Also known as heroic fatalism, this attitude was a FTF favorite. Fatalistic heroism derives from the belief that death is certain to come and that resisting it is futile; one may as well face death with stoicism and resignation. This belief and its accompanying stoic behavior patterns appear in several short stories. Lord Clives Last Biryani Supper Disillusionment and the depression that results from it are recurrent themes in FTFs short stories. FTF himself suffered from feelings of disillusionment and dislocation following his harrowing experiences during Americas Long Wars. Goodbye Kabul FTF, it is often noted, was enamored of a particular notion of masculinity. FTFs heroes are often outdoorsmen or hunters who are stoic, taciturn, and averse to showing emotion. Real men, according to FTF, are physically courageous and confident, and keep doubts and insecurities to themselves. Beso, Tango y Amor Many of FTFs characters have ambivalent feelings toward each other; in FTFs universe, people are not wholly good or bad. Bal Masque Animals in the FTF canon, whether they are game, pets, or wild, sometimes serve as symbols for their human hunters, caretakers or observers. Lizards of Formentera Fragments of dreams and memories - want to have fantasy encounters and casual togetherness? Whether single or in a permanent relationship, or something in between, with FTF stories you can live out your passionate uninhibited fantasies discretely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Pittsburgh socialite Laura Corey rolled into Reno, Nevada, in 1905 for a six-month stay, her goal was a divorce from the president of U.S. Steel. Her visit also provided a provocative glimpse into the city's future. With its rugged landscape and rough-edged culture, Reno had little to offer early twentieth-century visitors besides the gambling and prostitution that had remained unregulated since Nevada's silver-mining heyday. But the possibility of easy divorce attracted national media attention, East Coast notables, and Hollywood stars, and soon the "Reno Cure" was all the rage. Almost overnight, Reno was on the map. Alicia Barber traces the transformation of Reno's reputation from backward railroad town to the nationally known "Sin Central"—as Garrison Keillor observed, a place where you could see things that you wouldn't want to see in your own hometown. Chronicling the city's changing fortunes from the days of the Comstock Lode, she describes how city leaders came to embrace an identity as "The Biggest Little City in the World" and transform their town into a lively tourist mecca. Focusing on the evolution of urban reputation, Barber carefully distinguishes between the image that a city's promoters hope to manufacture and the impression that outsiders actually have. Interweaving aspects of urban identity, she shows how sense of place, promoted image, and civic reputation intermingled and influenced each other—and how they in turn shaped the urban environment. Quickie divorces notwithstanding, Reno's primary growth engine was gambling; modern casinos came to dominate the downtown landscape. When mainstream America balked, Reno countered by advertising "tax freedom" and natural splendor to attract new residents. But by the mid-seventies, unchecked growth and competition from Las Vegas had initiated a downslide that persisted until a carefully crafted series of special events and the rise of recreational tourism began to attract new breeds of tourists. Barber's engaging story portrays Reno as more than a second-string Las Vegas, having pioneered most of the attractions-gaming and prizefighting, divorces and weddings-that made the larger city famous. As Reno continues to remold itself to weather the shifting winds of tourism and growth, Barber's book provides a cautionary tale for other cities hoping to ride the latest consumer trends.

Some have termed it parallel worlds or a multiverse; others have named it the island universe theory. The golden triangle is a hidden doorway to all these and so much more. Not found on any map and seemingly nomadic, the triangle is almost sentient, avoiding all eyes that search for it as few have tried to locate it, yet no one have been successful. Until now. The golden triangle has now opened again and chosen you as the witness. Step forward and don’t be alarmed. The triangle wishes to show you something, and now all you can do is be swept along the currents and bear witness to all you see.

Book excerpt: Annas Miracles is the auto biography of my life. I have tried to tell the simple story of how my husband. Stuart and I, fell in love and lived an adventurous life. We were both raised on ranches in West Texas Hill Country and when we became adults and married, we moved out of our comfort zone and embraced a world far different than what we knew as children. We fi rst went to California, then to Washington, D. C., and later to other parts of the United States, including Alaska. My husband helped build a tracking station for the Air Force in Pretoria, South Africa, and in Alaska. Stuart was a Tech Rep for Philco/Ford Corp; and we went from one state to another as the job required. I was expected to set up housekeeping under various conditions, some were not so easy, like living in Alaska and having to commute from one island to another by sea plane.. Having to pack up and move whenever a job opened up even if it meant having to follow Stuart later and not move with him. We managed to stay together and make a good life for ourselves wherever we happened to be.. I have documented our many moves and our life as it fi nally settled down and we found home back in Texas to raise our two daughters. Stuart became a Space Scientist at NASA still employed by Philco/Ford/Loreal/Aerospace Division. In 1993, I was diagnosed with Stage IV, Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. The Doctors at MD Anderson Cancer Center found cancer in both sides of my backbone and bone marrow, fi ve tumors in my head, and 89 lymph nodes with cancer from the neck down. I entered a 10 year Clinical Trial, and I was the only patient to survive . My Doctor told me that My Jesus must have healed me, he could not explain why I was still alive. Our family faced many diffi culties during our life but we made it through by believing in God and trusting in Him . I hope my Journal brings hope to those who have diffi culties and think that they are alone. God is real and still answers prayers today.

Book excerpt: "This fable lifts a great freight of ideas effortlessly…The story of an expedition driven on by wishes of possession and power but guided internally by myths of America whose sources lie in the late 20th century." —Guardian Following the energy crisis of the late twentieth century, America has been abandoned. Now, a century later, a small group of European explorers returns to the now climatically mutated continent. But America is unrecognizable—the Bering Strait has been dammed and much of the country has become a desert, populated by isolated natives and the bizarre remnants of a disintegrated culture. The expedition sets off from Manhattan on a cross-country journey, through Holiday Inns and abandoned theme parks, to uncover a shocking new power in the heart of Las Vegas.

She may look like the quintessential soccer mom now, but her childhood was full of uncertainty, abandonment, and many very dark days. Without a positive role model, an emotionally stable family member, or a consistent community, she had to forge her way ahead just to survive day to day. It wasn't until she was preparing for a family of her own that she began to learn the lessons that would lead to a more hopeful future for herself, her husband, and her children. Now she shares those lessons with other women struggling to create healthy families despite their own unhealthy family foundations. Through introspective and probing questions, Mending Broken Branches guides the reader to accept her past, understand her present, and find a vision for her future. The interactive design includes space to work through the journaling prompts provided, as well as extra-wide margins for notes of reflection while reading. With the gentle voice of a trusted mentor, Elizabeth encourages and equips women to cultivate strong, flourishing, God-honoring lives, and to break the cycle of dysfunction.
