Book excerpt: Design of the Helicopter Escape and Personnel Survival System for large helicopters requires that rocket exhaust plumes pass in close proximity to the helicopter body. In this report, an engineering analysis is performed to determine the severity of the problem, with emphasis on taking worst-case examples. Two computer plume prediction techniques were used and three subscale tests using live rocket motors and a helicopter model were performed. A complete study of the problem should include developing equations describing the flow field of the plume about the helicopter body and the heat transfer to the fuselage based on this flow field, but was not performed in this study due to funding shortages. Results indicated that the helicopter body should be able to survive the environment. In the future, it is recommended that an instrumented helicopter cross-section be placed in the exhaust plume of a heavyweight retro motor to verify the safety of the system. (Author).

Book excerpt: The purpose of these studies is to determine the need for helicopter escape and survival systems designed to reduce the fatality and critical injury rate in helicopter accidents. Reference is made to documentation of a study performed under BuWeps Contract NOW61-0668-C dated 8 October 1962 entitled: Feasibility Study of Escape Systems for U.S. Navy Helicopters. The referenced study covered all U.S. Navy and Marine helicopter accidents from 1952 through 1960. Special data were reduced from those accidents which resulted in fatal or critical injuries. This document represents a continuation of the former study and covers U.S. Navy/U.S. Marine helicopter accidents from 1961 through 1965 and U.S. Army helicopter accidents from 1958 through 1965. Book excerpt: This AGARDograph describes the worldwide incidence of military and civilian over-water helicopter accidents and the problems related to survival. It reviews the typical accident scenario from the moment the occupant steps on board the helicopter and the pre-flight briefing through to the accident itself, the difficulties with escape (commonly from underwater and in darkness), to the rescue and return safe and sound to dry land. It also proposes improvements to crashworthiness and life support equipment in current in-service and future heliocopters and a syllabus for underwater escape training. This AGARDograph was sponsored by the AGARD Aerospace Medical Panel.

Perhaps less familiar, but equally important and exciting, was the war on the western frontier, where Ohio Valley settlers fought for the land they had claimed -- and for their very lives. George Rogers Clark stepped forward to organize the local militias into a united front that would defend the western frontier from Indian attacks. Clark was one of the few people who saw the importance of the West in the war effort as a whole, and he persuaded Virginia's government to lend support to his efforts. As a result Clark was able to cross the Ohio, saving that part of the frontier from further raids. Lowell Harrison captures the excitement of this vital part of American history while giving a complete view of George Rogers Clark's significant achievements. Lowell H. Harrison, is a professor emeritus of history at Western Kentucky University and is the author or co-author of numerous books, including Lincoln of Kentucky, A New History of Kentucky, and Kentucky's Governors."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States developed the Gambit and Hexagon programs to improve the nation's means for peering over the iron curtain that separated western democracies from east European and Asian communist countries. The inability to gain insight into vast "denied areas" required exceptional systems to understand threats posed by US adversaries. Corona was the first imagery satellite system to help see into those areas. Hexagon began as a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) program with the first concepts proposed in 1964. The CIA's primary goal was to develop an imagery system with Corona-like ability to image wide swaths of the earth, but with resolution equivalent to Gambit. Such a system would afford the United States even greater advantages monitoring the arms race that had developed with the nation's adversaries. The Hexagon mapping camera flew on 12 of the 20 Hexagon missions. It proved to be a remarkably efficient and prodigious producer of imagery for mapping purposes. The mapping camera system was successful by every standard including technical capabilities, reliability, and capacity.

Advances in military textiles and personal equipment summarises key research on the design, manufacture and applications of military textiles.Beginning with an overview of design issues, part one explores anthropometric methods, psychological, colour and camouflage issues related to the successful design of military textiles. Materials and design issues in military helmets, footwear and hand wear are also reviewed. Part two goes on to consider applications of particular types of military clothing and equipment, including optimisation of body armour design, high performance ballistic protection using polymer nanocomposite technology as well as advances in materials and modelling of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear protective clothing. Finally, Advances in military textiles and personal equipment looks specifically at designing load carriage and advanced hydration systems for military personnel. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Advances in military textiles and personal equipment is an invaluable resource for all those working in the design, manufacture and production of military clothing and equipment, as well as for the defence industry itself. - Summarises key research on the design, manufacture and applications of military textiles - Begins with an overview of the issues related to the successful design of military textiles and reviews materials and design issues in military helmets, footwear and hand wear - Sections consider applications of particular types of military clothing and equipment, including optimisation of body armour design, and discusses advances in materials and modelling of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear protective clothing

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the most complex machine ever sent to another planet: Curiosity. It is a one-ton robot with two brains, seventeen cameras, six wheels, nuclear power, and a laser beam on its head. No one human understands how all of its systems and instruments work. This essential reference to the Curiosity mission explains the engineering behind every system on the rover, from its rocket-powered jetpack to its radioisotope thermoelectric generator to its fiendishly complex sample handling system. Its lavishly illustrated text explains how all the instruments work -- its cameras, spectrometers, sample-cooking oven, and weather station -- and describes the instruments' abilities and limitations. It tells you how the systems have functioned on Mars, and how scientists and engineers have worked around problems developed on a faraway planet: holey wheels and broken focus lasers. And it explains the grueling mission operations schedule that keeps the rover working day in and day out.
