Book excerpt: Born in Loughbrickland, Co Down, in 1831, Helen Mabel Trevor was encouraged in her love of drawing and painting from an early age. Self-taught for a large part of her life, she attended the Royal Academy Schools in London from 1877 to 1880. Trevor travelled to France in the 1880s, studying at the atelier of Carolus-Duran in Paris and visiting Brittany and Normandy, where she painted scenes of the daily life of the local communities. She spent six years living in Italy, visiting Florence, Assisi, Perugia, Venice, Rome and Capri. On her return to Paris in 1889, she resumed her studies with Carolus-Duran, and made the city her home until her death in 1900. Trevor exhibited regularly at the RHA in Dublin, the Royal Academy in London, and at the Paris Salon over the years. Key works by the artist are to be found in the National Gallery of Ireland and the Ulster Museum in Belfast. These and many more paintings and drawings are featured in this richly illustrated and long-overdue biography of the artist by Carmel Coyle--éd.

I told her that her words to me, ‘You look good for your age,’ had inspired a book. ‘Wow!’ she said. ‘You wrote a whole book about that?’ ‘Twenty-nine kick-ass writers wrote it,’ I said. She gave me a thumbs up.” From the Preface This is a book about women and ageism. There are twenty-nine contributing writers, ranging in age from their forties to their nineties. Through essays, short stories, and poetry, they share their distinct opinions, impressions, and speculations on aging and ageism and their own growth as people. In these thoughtful, fierce, and funny works, the writers show their belief in women and the aging process. Book excerpt: Local/Global: Women Artists in the Nineteenth Century is the first book to investigate women artists working in disparate parts of the world. This major new book offers a dazzling array of compelling essays on art, architecture and design by leading writers: Joan Kerr on art in Australia by residents, migrants and visitors; Ka Bo Tsang on the imperial court in China; Gayatri Sinha on south Asian artists; Mary Roberts on harem portraiture of the Ottoman empire; Griselda Pollock on Parisian studios; Lynne Walker on women patron-builders in Britain; S?shy;ghle Bhreathnach-Lynch and Julie Anne Stevens on Irish women artists; Ruth Phillips on souvenir art by native and settler women; Janet Berlo on North American textiles; Kristina Huneault on white settler identity in Canada; Charmaine Nelson on neo-classical sculpture in North America; and Stacie Widdifield on Mexico. This pioneering collection addresses issues at the heart of feminist and post-colonial studies: the nature of difference, discrepant modernities and cross-cultural encounters. Written in a lively and accessible style, this lavishly illustrated volume offers fresh perspectives on women, art and identity. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of women artists and the art of the nineteenth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book presents a critical study of pictorial narrative in nineteenth-century European painting. Covering works from France, Germany, Britain, Italy and elsewhere, it traces the ways in which immensely popular artists like Jean-Léon Gérôme, Karl von Piloty and William Quiller Orchardson used unique visual strategies to tell thrilling and engaging stories. Regardless of genre, content or national context, these paintings share a fundamental modern narrative mode. Unlike traditional art, they do not rely on textual sources; nor do they tell stories through the human body alone. Instead, they experiment with objects, spaces, cause-and-effect relations and open-ended ambiguity, prompting viewers and reviewers to read for clues in order to weave their own elaborate tales.
