Book excerpt: ...If we inquire the actual value of this philosophy as a solution of the problem of the universe, we fear that it demonstrates little more than that man cannot by searching find out God. Hegelianism has resemblances to Christianity to which we attach higher worth than Mr. McTaggart does, and than Hegel himself probably did. Human intellect at its loftiest levels, in its strongest efforts, attains to shadows the substance whereof is enshrined in Christianity. Yet the shadows are strangely distorted. We are offered an immortality involving eternal pre-existence, and both morally useless and spiritually unattractive; a substitute for God to which the only pronoun applicable is "it"; a theory of the Supreme Good and of Morality, less unworkable indeed than most of its atheistic rivals, but destructive of holiness; a curiously inept but withal dangerous conception of Punishment, startlingly clever and logical, but emptying it of nearly all justice; a presentation of love from which the love of God - both His to man and man's to Him - evanishes. With a closely reasoned chapter on "The Conception of Society as an Organism " we are in nearly complete agreement. The author shows that society can be regarded as an organism only by depriving the latter term of all true content. In some respects the chapter on " Hegelianism and Christianity" is the most important in the book. It displays plainly and forcibly the resemblances (not quite sufficiently) and differences between Hegel's philosophy and Christianity. The necessary verdict is that despite Hegel's formal adherence to Christianity his system is utterly irreconcilable with it. The last chapter manifests the tendency-to use no stronger word-of Hegelianism towards mysticism. It is enough to notice that idealistic philosophy, which is clearly the victorious system at the present day, inevitably brings men face to face with demands of the human mind before which "reason fails, with all her powers." Mr. McTaggart scarcely perceives whither the homage paid to emotion must in the long run lead. We question if anyone has ever read completely the secret of Hegel. As an intellectual system, several scholars seem to have apprehended it, more or less fully and accurately. But the spirit of Hegel somehow evaporates in his commentators. For Hegel, philosophy was the expression of a real, if erroneous, religion. One is well-nigh inclined to say that Hegel came into touch with reality in a way analogous, exceptis excipiendis, with the experimental element in Christianity. For his commentators philosophy is chiefly dry dialectic. However this may be, Mr. McTaggart's Studies are not only a help to the understanding and appreciation of Hegel, an extension and application of his principles, but an intrinsic contribution to the progress of philosophy. The Christian idealist sees in their excellences no less than their defects the imperative need of interpreting and guiding idealism by revelation, unless the claims of a great part of human nature must remain unsatisfied. -The London Quarterly Review, Vol. 8

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Hegelian Cosmology Chapters V and VI of this book appeared, nearly in their present form, in the International Journal of Ethics. (July 1896, and July 1897.) The other chapters have not been previously published. In referring to Hegel's works I have used the Collected Edition, the publication of which began in 1832. For purposes of quotation I have generally availed myself of Wallace's translation of the Encyclopaedia, of Dyde's translation of the Philosophy of Law, and of Spiers' and Sanderson's translation of the Philosophy of Religion. I am much indebted to Mr G. L. Dickinson, of King's College in Cambridge, and to my wife, for their kindness in reading this book before its publication, and assisting me with many valuable suggestions. The changes in the second edition are not numerous. When they are more than verbal, I have called attention to them in notes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discoveries of general relativity and quantum mechanics in the 20th century provide the perfect opportunity for Hegel’s thought to become more topical than it has ever been. By bringing speculative philosophy into conversation with quantum cosmology, this book develops Hegel’s metaphysics of true infinitude and Hawking’s theory on the origins of spacetime in tandem, providing a compelling rationale for the idea that the universe is a self-generating, self-organizing, self-enclosed whole. Ever sensitive to the complex relationship of scientific, philosophical, and theological issues in theoretical cosmology, the study brings a fresh perspective to the unique brand of metaphysical theology underlying speculative philosophy and offers a new way of conducting transdisciplinary work involving Hegelian thought. This is essential reading for Hegel scholars, Hawking scholars, those interested in philosophical cosmology, the ontology of the quantum void, the realism vs. idealism debate, infinitude, “imaginary” time, and dialectical materialism, and those compelled by post-classical approaches to theology.

Book excerpt: Petrified Intelligence offers the first comprehensive treatment of Hegel's Philosophy of Nature, exploring its central place within his system, including its relation to his Logic, Philosophy of Mind, and moral and political thought. It highlights the contemporary relevance of Hegel's approach to nature, particularly with respect to environmental issues. Challenging the standard view that Hegel devalues nature relative to mind and culture, Alison Stone reveals the deep concern to re-enchant the natural world that pervades his entire philosophical project. Written in clear and nontechnical language, the book also provides a critical introduction to Hegel's metaphysics.

It examines Hegel's alleged idealism, his concepts of space and time, the conception of speculative geometry, his critical engagement with Kant's Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science, his critique of Newtonian science, his concept of evolution, the notion of Aufhebung, and his infamous theory of planetary objects. The book confirms that, far from being surpassed by nineteenth- and twentieth-century scientific developments, Hegel's philosophy of nature continues to have great significance for our understanding of the natural world.

Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary book develops a dialectical narrative about the beginning of the universe by combining Hegel’s philosophy with texts about the Big Bang theory. Scientific accounts of the Big Bang indicate that the first second of existence was an eventful period in which the universe progressed through six different epochs. Bringing together cosmological narratives and Hegel’s writings (particularly The Science of Logic), Gregory Phipps reads this movement as a dialectical progression, a sequence of transitions among interlinked concepts like being and nothing, finitude and infinitude, and space and time. He also draws upon Hegel’s concept of absolutes to outline a model of the multiverse. In doing so, Phipps brings Hegel’s philosophy into dialogue with contemporary science, arguing that Hegelian readings of the first second offer speculative snapshots of a hypothetical multiverse that contains the full (and probably infinite) scope of existence. For scholars and enthusiasts alike, Dialectics of the Big Bang and the Absolute Existence of the Multiverse is a thought-provoking exploration of the crosscurrents between philosophy, science, and narrative, inviting readers to contemplate the profound mysteries of the cosmos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel evoked passionate discipleship, as well as equally passionate opposition. He was praised by the likes of Karl Marx and John Dewey but scorned by Karl Popper and Bertrand Russell. He has been charged with being a proponent of an authoritarian state by some, and he has been accused of instigating the dissolution of the state by others. Notoriously difficult to understand, Hegel's keen insights continue his legacy today. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Hegelian Philosophy covers all aspects of Hegel's thought. It discusses his students and colleagues, as well as key figures who either adopted (and adapted) his thought or attempted to explicate it for later generations. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, a glossary of German terms, a bibliography, and over 500 cross-referenced dictionary entries.
