Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar Between the appearance of the twenty-fifth and twenty sixth editions of this Grammar1 more than six years elapsed. During that period so many important works appeared on the textual criticism and exegesis of the Old Testament, as well as on the grammar of the Hebrew and other Semitic languages, that the editor again found abundant materials for amplifying and re-casting the work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Hebrew Grammar Although so modest in size that it may be mis taken for an elementary treatise, it should perhaps rather be considered as the most scientific discussion of the Hebrew language which has yet been produced. While it was suggested by Justus Olshausen's Lehr buch, it is not an epitome of that work, but a really independent production. A smaller type has Often been made use of for subordinate matter but very little has been inserted in the body of the work for mere reference. In the Exercises and in the illustrations of rules, I have sought to confine myself to strictly Biblical expressions. Large use has been made throughout of the inductive principle in the form of presentation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hebrew Grammar The following pages are an attempt to supply a want suggested by the experience of two Lecturers for the first part of the Theological Tripos at Cambridge. A few words of explanation may serve to make this clear. There is at the present time a division of opinion among teachers as to the best way of learning a new language. Some insist, especially in the case of a dead language, on a long course of grounding in grammar before anything serious is attempted in the way of reading or speaking. Others seek to minimise the learning of grammar and to push on almost at once to some form of literature. The standpoint adopted in this book is that a certain amount of spade-work is necessary, in the way of learning by heart grammatical forms and usages; but that a good deal of memory-work may be saved by starting the beginner in actual reading as soon as he knows the more elementary grammatical forms. So the student is expected to work through the ordinary classes of nouns to the end of the regular (strong) Verb, before he reads the Old Testa ment; but at that point he is given assistance in starting the Hebrew text, before going on to the second half of the grammar. In this way he becomes accustomed to the sound and sight of many forms before he tries to commit them to memory. What sad consequences follow from the use of Gram mars which are below the present more advanced state of Hebrew philology, recent appearances have plainly shown.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hebrew Grammar With a Copious Syntax and Praxis But the most important work, which has ever appeared on this subject, is the larger Hebrew Grammar of Gesenius, Professor of Theology at Halle, published in 1817, and containing about 900 pages. In this work, the whole in terior of Hebrew Grammar has received a new arrange ment, and a multitude of dark places been illuminated. The publication of it has made a new era in this department; and it leaves but little to expect from further improvement, except in some of the' details which minute observation may correct, and some arrangements of matter which may be rendered more conspicuous. Something in both of these respects has been attempted in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Hebrew Grammar As in many respects this grammar differs from other grammars, the plan which has been adopted requires a few explanations. Although modern works on Hebrew Grammar have been consulted by me, I did not think it advisable blindly to follow them. Experience has taught me that this would be far from prudent. The greatest scholars sometimes venture to create rules which have no sufiicient basis and even to quote examples which only exist in their imagination. Most curious instances of this could be given. But for what purpose? In spite of a few inaccuracies they remain men who by reason of their learning and hard work are entitled to our respect. I merely wish, therefore, to point out in few words in what particulars this manual follows a more or less independent course, and the motives which have induced me to do so.
