Book excerpt: The total abundances of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn in oxic, nearshore sediments of north arctic Alaska, are similar to those of corresponding pristine or pre-industrial-age sediments of many tropical-temperate regions, and thus do not reflect the unique weathering and depositional processes of the Arctic. Laboratory experiments on metal partitioning suggest that about 50% of the metal contents (

Sathy Naidu and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a concern that anthropogenic contaminants discharged during petroleum- related activities can accumulate in the Beaufort Lagoon sediments. In response to this concern, concentrations of 12 metals were analyzed [copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), vanadium (V), lead (Pb), tin (Sn), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), barium (Ba), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn)] in the mud fraction and total mercury (THg) and hydrocarbons [saturated compounds such as normal and isoprenoid alkanes, triterpanes, steranes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)] determined in gross sediments collected at 22 locations at the lagoon and in one natural oil seep.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic region has long held a fascination for explorers and scientists of many countries. Despite the numerous voyages of exploration, the na ture of the central Arctic was unknown only 90 years ago; it was believed to be a shallow sea dotted with islands. During Nansen's historic voyage on the polarship Fram, which commenced in 1893, the great depth of the central basin was discovered. In the Soviet Union, investigation of the Arctic Ocean became national policy after 1917. Today research at several scientific institutions there is devoted primarily to the study of the North Polar Ocean and seas. The systematic exploration of the Arctic by the United States com menced in 1951. Research has been conducted year-round from drifting ice islands, which are tabular fragments of glacier ice that break away from ice shelves. Most frequently, ice islands originate off the northern coast of Ellesmere Island. These research platforms are occupied as weather sta tions, as well as for oceanographic and geophysical studies. Several inter national projects, conducted by Canadian, European, and U. S. groups, have been underway during the last three decades. Although much new data have accumulated since the publication of the Marine Geology and Oceanography of the Arctic Seas volume in 1974 (Yvonne Herman, ed. ), in various fields of polar research-including present-day ice cover, hydrogra phy, fauna, flora, and geology-many questions remain to be answered.

Download or read book Environmental Geochemistry in the Tropics written by Julio Cesar Wasserman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-10 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Held in 1993 in Niterói, Brazil, the first International Conference on Environmental Geochemistry in Tropical Countries established a starting point for this book. The book opens with a discussion of the points that arose during the closing session, summarised by Dr. E.K. Duursma: The Environment in the Tropics Remains Unknown. Most of the processes that occur in temperate environments turn out to be completely different in the tropics. This can already be seen in Chapter 3, where estimates of radionuclide transfer factors reach values considerably greater than in temperate areas. The utilisation of variables measured in temperate environments for modelling of the tropics can result in completely erroneous conclusions and, worse, inefficient remediation solutions.
