Book excerpt: Depression, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, brain fog, weakness, it doesn't matter what your doctor calls it, it ALWAYS involves toxicity -- Dr. Sherry Rogers. Rest assured, this book contains everything you need to keep your health on track. Inside, we'll cover what heavy metals are, how they get inside us, and what you can do to remove them. When aluminum, mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium, and chromium are gently purged from the body, a stronger, clearer-thinking version of YOU comes to the surface. As an added bonus, detoxification helps protect against accelerated aging and sickness. In 1974 the World Health Organization reported that 82% of all chronic degenerative disease was caused by toxic metal poisoning! Book excerpt: The term heavy metal refers to any metallic chemical element that has a relatively high density and is toxic or poisonous at low concentrations. Examples of heavy metals include mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), thallium (Tl), and lead (Pb).Heavy metals are natural components of the Earth's crust. They cannot be degraded or destroyed. To a small extent they enter our bodies via food, drinking water and air. As trace elements, some heavy metals (e.g. copper, selenium, zinc) are essential to maintain the metabolism of the human body. However, at higher concentrations they can lead to poisoning. Heavy metal poisoning could result, for instance, from drinking-water contamination (e.g. lead pipes), high ambient air concentrations near emission sources, or intake via the food chain.Heavy metals are dangerous because they tend to bioaccumulate. Bioaccumulation means an increase in the concentration of a chemical in a biological organism over time, compared to the chemical's concentration in the environment. Compounds accumulate in living things any time they are taken up and stored faster than they are broken down (metabolized) or excreted.Heavy metals can enter a water supply by industrial and consumer waste, or even from acidic rain breaking down soils and releasing heavy metals into streams, lakes, rivers, and groundwater.

Book excerpt: Ever come across the expression “as mad as a hatter?” Heavy metal toxicity was so destructive in the 17th century that an expression was curved from the impact it had on individuals who were exposed to the poisonous process that was used to make hats. It was not until the 19th century that it was discovered that mercury poisoning was causing depression which resulted in insanity among hatters. If you suffer from degenerative health problems but you do not seem to get a long-lasting solution to those persistent symptoms even after maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, meditation, and everything else you need to be doing to stay healthy, you may be suffering from heavy metal poisoning. Our modern world is filled with toxins as a result of air pollution, environmental pollution, natural activities such as volcanic eruptions, and industrial chemicals released into our environment. One of the greatest threats to human health is exposure to heavy metal poisoning. Heavy metal poisoning refers to the accumulation of metallic elements with a density of 5 g cm-3 and above. There are thirty-eight (38) heavy metals including vanadium, lead, chromium, arsenic, zinc, cadmium, copper, nickel, and molybdenum. However, only four (4) of these metals, Lead, Arsenic, Mercury, and Cadmium are the main threats to human health. Unfortunately, these toxic metals often find their way into our bodies through breathing, ingestion, or absorption through our skin. Accumulation of these heavy metals in the human body can be harmful as these metals bind to human tissues, creating destructive free radicals that cause damage to the endocrine system, damage the immunity system and disrupt the absorption of vital minerals. Heavy metal poisoning, though quite common, often goes undetected as it is an elusive adversary that stays hidden within the human body till it has reached dangerous levels of bio-accumulation unless it is actively sorted out. The good news is that this guide will not only show you natural ways to detoxify the heavy metals accumulated in your body but will also help you prevent or minimize exposure. In this beginner’s quick start guide, you will discover... Heavy metal toxicity causes and symptoms How the most common heavy metals might affect your health Ways to diagnose heavy metal toxicity Foods to help you manage heavy metals A sample 4-week plan with recipes

Book excerpt: Focusing on the practical use of N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) in medicine, this book provides a comprehensive review of the basic biological and clinical studies documenting its benefits in treating medical disease. NAC is perhaps best known as an antidote for acetaminophen, but its therapeutic effect in a wide range of medical diseases has recently been realized. In addition to its well recognized use in radiological contrast prophylaxis for renal disease and pulmonary disorders, studies have suggested significant promise in psychiatric and neurological disorders such as addiction, Alzheimer’s disease, ataxia, autism, bipolar disorder, depression, epilepsy, neuropathy, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury and trichotillomania in addition to promising studies in audiology, cardiology, exercise physiology, gastroenterology, hematology, infectious disease, infertility and ophthalmology. Given the promising studies for a wide range of medical conditions, coupled with a excellent safety profile, the potential for NAC in the treatment of human disease appears considerable. Dr Leonore A Herzenberg from Stanford University, a pioneer of redox physiology and the use of NAC, provides a succinct history of the development of the therapeutic use of NAC for medical disease. This is followed by a series of basic science chapters outlining the role of NAC in important physiological processes, including modulation of dopamine and glutamate neurotransmitter systems, redox and mitochondrial metabolism, apoptosis and inflammation. The last section of the book is dedicated to clinically oriented chapters that comprehensively review the literature on medical disorders in which NAC has been found to be effective, including toxicity and cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological, psychiatric, pulmonary and renal disorders. Each chapter reviews the theoretical biological mechanisms of NAC for the specific diseases reviewed, rates the clinical studies using a standardized criteria in order to provide an objective level of evidence and grade of recommendation for the use of NAC for specific medical conditions and outlines the ongoing clinical trials examining NAC for the treatment of specific diseases. Final chapters review the clinical evidence verifying that specific theoretical biological mechanisms are actually being targeted by NAC in medical disease. Studies on the pharmacology, formulation and potential adverse effects of NAC are also reviewed. A final chapter synthesizes the clinical studies to suggest that the effectiveness of NAC may signal a new basic physiological disorder, glutathione deficiency, which may be an important pathophysiological mechanism of many diseases.
