Book excerpt: The AGS Complex has completed its second year of operation with heavy ion beams injected from the Booster for fixed-target research. The booster accepts Au{sup 33+} ions at about 1 MeV/nucleon from the Tandem Van der Graaff and accelerates them to a final energy of about 192 MeV/nucleon. The extracted Au{sup 33+} beam is stripped to Au{sup 77+} before injection into the AGS. Substantial experience has been gained in the areas of injection, acceleration, vacuum, and stripping processes. Deliberately introduced coupling during injection resulted in 50% more beam and a much smaller emittance. A second rf system, for low frequency operation, reduced the vacuum losses and the number of harmonics switches required. Efficiency of stripping of Au{sup 33+} into Au{sup 77+} and various final charge states have been performed as a function of Au{sup 33+} final energy. At the end of the 1993 running period, the maximum intensity achieved in the AGS was about 3 x 108 nuclei-per-pulse (NPP) of Au{sup 77+} at a kinetic energy of 10.2 GeV/nucleon. In the fall of 1995, a new fast extraction system and beam transport line for RHIC injection will be commissioned. The plan for raising intensity and reducing emittance for RHIC injection will also be presented.

Book excerpt: The AGS Booster now under construction has three objectives. They are to increase the space charge limit of the AGS by preaccelerating protons from 200 MeV to 1.5 GeV, to increase the intensity of the polarized protons in the AGS by accumulating many linac pulses at 200 MeV, and to preaccelerate heavy ions from the BNL Tandem Van de Graaff before injection into the AGS. Therefore, we have to devise a different injection method for each of these three operations. The proton and polarized proton injection employs charge exchange of negative hydrogen while heavy ions must use multiturn injection into the betatron space. In this note we give a brief description of the heavy ion injection and high intensity proton injection, which are conventional and familiar to the reader, and describe the method of accumulating polarized protons in some detail.

Book excerpt: The BNL Booster, now nearing completion, was designed to inject protons and heavy ions into the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) for further acceleration. In the future, ion beams from the AGS will in turn be further accelerated in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Given the wide range of ion masses, energies and beam intensities the Booster will generate, other important applications should be considered. Dedicated use of the Booster for such applications may be possible during limited periods. However shared use would be preferable from the points of view of availability, affordability and efficiency. While heavy ions of a given isotope are injected into the AGS, the same or other ion species from the Booster could be simultaneously delivered to a new irradiation area for treatment of patients, testing of electronic devices or other applications and research. To generate two different beam species, ion sources on both Tandem accelerators would be used; one for AGS injection and the other one for a time-sharing application. Since the beam transport from the Tandems to the Booster can not be rapidly adjusted, it will be necessary to select beams of identical magnetic rigidity. The present study was performed to determine to what extent this compatibility requirement imposes limitations on the available ion species, energies and/or intensities.

Their enthusiasm and dedication for their work was readily transmitted to the students resulting in a very suc cessful school.

The origin of this meeting goes back to 1982 when the organizers met at the GANIL laboratory in Caen, France which had just started accelerating argon ions at 44 MeV per nucleon. We then realized that 1984 should be the appropriate time to review the first results obtained with such new kinds of facilities. The material contained in this volume, presenting many beautiful re sults on nuclei at high excitation, fully confirms this point. Many stimulating exchanges between experts in rather diffe rent fields already took place during the school and we hope that this cross fertilization will lead to further developments. About half of the present volume is also devoted to the field of relativistic heavy ion collisions, which is now expanding rapidly. As an illustration, let us recall that the construction of a 30 on 30 GeV per nucleon collider at Brookhaven has been recognized last year as one cf the major priorities by the US Nuclear Science Advisory Committee. We would like to express our gratitude to NATO for its ge nerous financial support which made this institute possible.
