Book excerpt: Major accomplishments in the second half of Fiscal Year 1980 include: the large aperture Cs+1 contact ionization source has been operational through most of this period. The full system comprised of source plus three drift tubes was brought into operation early in April 1980. Beam profiles and current measurements indicate that the system performs close to design specifications. System studies have been expanded to include multiple beam systems, in addition to the single beam systems studied heretofore. Work has continued on the development of beam diagnostic devices. Most of the effort has been directed toward the development of the electron beam probe and scintillator systems. Zeolite source development is continuing, with major emphasis on source stability and lifetime. A model for the longitudinal resistive wall instability has been developed which indicates the induction linac beam should be stable to first order in the resistance. Considerable theory effort has also been concentrated upon the transport of space charge dominated beams through periodic focusing structures. A multiple electrostatic quadrupole array capable of handling forty nine parallel beamlets has been designed and constructed.

Book excerpt: The 200 keV cesium-ion injector for the Single Beam Transport Experiment, designed to have a variable and controlled perveance, has been debugged and has now been well characterized. Operated without grids, it delivers an ion beam with an emittance about twice the thermal value computed from the temperature of the emitter. Measurements on the 2 MeV injector model with the Electron Beam Probe continue to be refined to understand the nature of the electron halo around the ion beam. Fabrication of a long-pulse ion induction accelerating module is under way. Development of scintillators and insulators continues at a low level. Theoretical studies include octupole transport systems, longitudinal beam stability, and exploration of possible induction linac parameters for a High Temperature Experiment.

Book excerpt: The Cs+ pulsed drift tube injector has continued to operate satisfactorily in a program of studying the characteristics of the beam and of developing diagnostic tools. A single beam transport experiment has been designed and fabrication of the components has begun. The purpose of the experiment is the study of transverse beam dynamics and the stability of a space-charge dominated beam traveling through a periodic strong-focusing channel. Increasing attention has been given to multiple-beam heavy ion induction linacs and it appears that there will be significant technical and cost advantages in such a system. Theoretical studies of the longitudinal stability of beams and of longitudinal-transverse coupling have continued. Electrostatic quadrupole beam transport systems have also been an object of study. Engineering development of module components has included experiments with novel ignitrons as well as evaluations of standard ones. Evaluation of magnetic core material also continues.

Energetic heavy ions, for example 10-GeV uranium, provided by an rf linac or an induction linac, are used as alternatives to laser light to drive inertial confinement fusion pellets. The assessment has covered accelerator technology, transport of heavy-ion beams, target interaction physics, civilian power issues, and military applications. It is concluded that particle accelerators promise to be efficient pellet drivers, but that there are formidable technical problems to be solved. It is recommended that a moderate level research program on heavy-ion fusion be pursued and that LASL should continue to work on critical issues in accelerator development, beam transport, reactor systems studies, and target physics over the next few years.
