Book excerpt: Examining the vivid, often apocalyptic church murals of Peru from the early colonial period through the nineteenth century, Heaven, Hell, and Everything in Between explores the sociopolitical situation represented by the artists who generated these murals for rural parishes. Arguing that the murals were embedded in complex networks of trade, commerce, and the exchange of ideas between the Andes and Europe, Ananda Cohen Suarez also considers the ways in which artists and viewers worked through difficult questions of envisioning sacredness. This study brings to light the fact that, unlike the murals of New Spain, the murals of the Andes possess few direct visual connections to a pre-Columbian painting tradition; the Incas' preference for abstracted motifs created a problem for visually translating Catholic doctrine to indigenous congregations, as the Spaniards were unable to read Inca visual culture. Nevertheless, as Cohen Suarez demonstrates, colonial murals of the Andes can be seen as a reformulation of a long-standing artistic practice of adorning architectural spaces with images that command power and contemplation. Drawing on extensive secondary and archival sources, including account books from the churches, as well as on colonial Spanish texts, Cohen Suarez urges us to see the murals not merely as decoration or as tools of missionaries but as visual archives of the complex negotiations among empire, communities, and individuals.

They put former-attorney-turned-clergyman Tucker Tolliver out to pastor the Atherton Church of the Holy Covenant. Second Question: How do you drive a man of the cloth away from God? Answer: You put him in charge of the Atherton Church of the Holy Covenant, a band of rag-tag Christian misfits who put the ""dys"" in ""dysfunctional."" Then you wait. Between church matriarch Agnes Hartnett, Wanda Peterson, ""The Duke of Cheswick,"" and even part-time sexton Jake Carlyle, the merry miscreants known as Atherton CHC are doing their best to drive Pastor Tucker Tolliver out. A man of the cloth on the outside; day by day he is being stripped naked on the inside. But it doesn't matter what they do. He'll never walk away from God. He can't. Not for his sake. For Sarah's. If he ever abandons his church and his God, it will be for one reason and one reason only. Because of God.

Book excerpt: Witches, ghosts, fairies. Premodern Europe was filled with strange creatures, with the devil lurking behind them all. But were his powers real? Did his powers have limits? Or were tales of the demonic all one grand illusion? Physicians, lawyers, and theologians at different times and places answered these questions differently and disagreed bitterly. The demonic took many forms in medieval and early modern Europe. By examining individual authors from across the continent, this book reveals the many purposes to which the devil could be put, both during the late medieval fight against heresy and during the age of Reformations. It explores what it was like to live with demons, and how careers and identities were constructed out of battles against them – or against those who granted them too much power. Together, contributors chart the history of the devil from his emergence during the 1300s as a threatening figure – who made pacts with human allies and appeared bodily – through to the comprehensive but controversial demonologies of the turn of the seventeenth century, when European witch-hunting entered its deadliest phase. This book is essential reading for all students and researchers of the history of the supernatural in medieval and early modern Europe.

Book excerpt: Raised in Hell. Living in Buffalo. And on the verge of accidentally destroying both realms... Dark angel and actuary Evangeline Thayer hates taking unnecessary risks, but she knows becoming human will be worth it. All the creatures in Hell have bullied her about her negligible ‘power’ her whole life. And don’t get her started on why she has wings if she can’t even fly?!? She just needs a teensy bit of help with removing her power...which is where a very hot, very flirty, and absolutely infuriating Nephilim comes in. Half-angel Gideon Durand has been fighting demons a long time, but he’s never heard of a dark angel. Least of all one this gorgeous, stubborn, and with the power to completely nullify evil. Maybe in Hell, that’s a weakness—but with an unknown evil on the loose and murdering Nephilim?—that’s a damned useful skill. So Gideon strikes a deal with Evangeline: he’ll scratch her wings...if she’ll scratch his. Now good and evil are—temporarily—working together. And might even be having steamy fun...if it wasn’t for a rather inconvenient threat trying to unleash the apocalypse, once and for all. Each book in the Unlocking His Heart series is STANDALONE: * Imperfect Angel * Hell of an Angel

Book excerpt: Join the library and raise hell in the first book of a stunning new fantasy series, where books unfinished by their authors reside within the Unwritten Wing of the devil's own library, and restless characters will emerge from out of their pages... Many years ago, Claire was named Head Librarian of the Unwritten Wing. Her job consists mainly of repairing and organizing books, but also of keeping an eye on restless stories that risk materializing as characters and escaping the library. When a Hero escapes from his book and goes in search of his author, Claire must track and capture him with the help of former muse and current assistant Brevity and nervous demon courier Leto. But what should have been a simple retrieval goes horrifyingly wrong when the terrifyingly angelic Ramiel attacks them, convinced that they hold the Devil's Bible. The text of the Devil's Bible is a powerful weapon in the power struggle between Heaven and Hell, so it falls to the librarians to find a book with the power to reshape the boundaries between Heaven, Hell... and Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mysticism of Ordinary Life: Theology, Philosophy, and Feminism presents a new vision of Christian mystical theology. It offers critical interpretations of Catholic theologians, postmodern philosophers, and intersectional feminists who draw on mystical traditions to affirm ordinary life. It raises questions about normativity, gender, and race, while arguing that the everyday experience of the grace of divine union can be an empowering source of social transformation. It develops Christian teachings about the Word made flesh, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the Christian spiritual life, while exploring the mystical significance of philosophical discourses about immanence, alterity, in-betweenness, nothingness, and embodiment. The discussion of Latino/a and Black sources in North America expands the Western mystical canon and opens new horizons for interdisciplinary dialogue. The volume challenges contemporary culture to recognize and draw inspiration from quotidian manifestations of the unknown God of incarnate love. It includes detailed studies of Grace Jantzen, Amy Hollywood, Catherine Keller, Karl Rahner, Adrienne von Speyr, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Michel Henry, Michel de Certeau, Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva, Gloría Anzaldúa, Ada María Isasi-Díaz, Alice Walker, M. Book excerpt: An Angel in Heaven decides to transition into a demon, because he can see that on Earth, the battle between good and evil is being won by evil, and he wants to be on the winning side. He abandons the security, comfort and bliss of Heaven and heads for Earth, the kingdom of the Devil himself, where he is mentored by a demon with thousands of years’ experience in deceiving and hurting people. We get an inside look into his training as his ancient guide teaches him how best to influence people to bring about loss, illness, anguish, and destruction upon themselves. Devils can never overcome people’s free will, but they are nevertheless persistent in their never-ending efforts to subvert, undermine and wreak havoc through their deceitful and beguiling ways. Is this a true story?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Said God to Moses, "I am who I am." Ever since, questions about God abound. Who, what, where, when, why? Even, how many? In the Christian faith tradition, what about all that "trinitarian" stuff the Father, the Son, the Holy Sprit? Is it one God? Three Gods? What's up? I AM WHO I AM is God's answer to all these questions and more. For the first time ever, God speaks out. The God of the Holy Spirit, the immanent God inside, speaks out! And all is good. I AM WHO I AM is God's answer to all these questions and more. For the first time ever, God speaks out. By overthrowing the hierarchical Trinity (with the Father enjoying a view from the top and the Holy Spirit bringing up the rear) and by replacing it with a circular Trinity having no beginning and no end, for the first time ever, God is free to speak God's mind. The God of the Holy Spirit, the immanent God inside, speaks out! And all is good. The book is divided into six Parts (as we all know, on the seventh, God rests). After a general introduction in Part I, Parts II IV are devoted to each persona of the Trinity offering thoughts on anything and everything: on Creation and the Creative Process; on the "mind of God;" on the need for an "extreme make-over" when it comes to God and the Holy Trinity in contemporary society; on the universality of the story of Jesus; and so much more. Speaking to the reader in no-nonsense, user-friendly terms, Part V addresses such theological topics as "The Prayer of the Preyer," "S.I.N.," Satan, Heaven, Hell, and everything in between. The final part, the Epilogue, is a return of that talking donkey out of the Book of Number's, Balaam's Donkey, reporting from the parade route of Jesus into Jerusalem. It is something that no one should miss. Finally, an autobiography of God as seen through the lens of God! Finally, the God of the Holy Spirit gets his/her say! And all is good. (I AM WHO I AM is the first of three autobiographies featuring God, Satan, and Jesus, respectively. Stay tuned for Satan's personal story in E-MAILS FROM THE UNDERWORLD and for I AM THE WORD: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF JESUS.)
