Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat transfer performance of horizontal roped tubes was studied using an evaporator/condenser test rig. The condenser section contained a single horizontal tube and was operated at both vacuum and atmospheric conditions. A vacuum pump was integral to the system to ensure the presence of noncondensible gases did not affect the results. The test tubes were Wolverine MHT Korodense titanium tubes with an outside diameter of 16.07 mm and a corrugation pitch of 8 mm. The effect of wire-wrapping was studied using titanium wires ranging from 0. 1 to 1.6 mm in diameter corresponding to a range of pitch to diameter ratio from 80 to 5. The outside heat transfer coefficient, h(sub O)o, was determined by first experimentally obtaining the overall heat transfer coefficient, U(sub O)o, and then utilizing a modified Wilson Plot procedure. Results obtained for steam condensation indicate that the MHT Korodense titanium tube provides negligible enhancement compared to the a titanium tube. The addition of wire-wrapping provided minimal increase in the outside heat transfer coefficient, about 8% at a fractional coverage of approximately 5% corresponding to a pitch to wire diameter ratio near 20.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat-transfer measurements were made for filmwise condensation of steam on externally enhanced horizontal tubes under vacuum and at atmospheric pressure. Data were obtained for copper tubes with circular fins of rectangular, triangular, trapezoidal, and parabolic cross sections for spiral fins of triangular cross section, for commercially available finned tubes and for wire-wrapped tubes. Four spirally finned tubes from each of Cu, Cu-ni, A1 and stainless steel and two tubes with fins of rectangular cross section from each of Cu-Ni and A1 were manufactured and tested to investigate the effect of thermal conductivity. Among sprially finned tubes, the optimum fin pitch was found to be 1.6 mm. The tubes with a parabolic fin shape showed the best performance with steam-side enhancements of 4.1 and 6.2 under vacuum and at the atmospheric pressure respectively. Enhancement ratios as high as 3.5 and 2.1 were obtained under vacuum and at atmospheric pressure, respectively, for the commercially available finned tubes. The heat-transfer performance decreased with decreasing tube metal thermal conductivity. For the wire-wrapped tubes, an optimum pitch to wire diameter ratio of about 5.1 was found, with steam-side enhancements of about 1.9 and 2.2 under vacuum and at atmospheric pressure, respectively. A recent theoretical analysis of laminar film of low-surface-tension fluids on wire-wrapped tubes was modified to include the condensate retention of the tube due to the high surface tension of water. Agreement between this modified analysis and the experimental data was favorable. Keywords: Heat transfer coefficient.

Book excerpt: Steam condensation heat transfer measurements were made in a 5-tube test condenser having an additional perforated tube to simulate up to 30 active tubes. Results were obtained for smooth tubes and roped tubes wrapped with wire. A Sieder-Tate equation was used to correlate the inside heat-transfer coefficient. For smooth tubes, a leading coefficient of 0.029 was found, while it was 0.061 for the roped tubes. The average condensing coefficient measured for 30 smooth tubes was 0.59 times the Nusselt coefficient calculated for the first tube. When the smooth tubes were wrapped with wire, this ratio increased up to 0.86. Further, roped tubes without wire experienced a ratio of 0.63, while roped tubes wrapped with wire resulted in a ratio of 0.86. These preliminary data show that wire-wrapped tubes may lead to a significant reduction in condenser surface area. (Author).

Book excerpt: Steam-condensation heat-transfer measurements were made using a 5-tube in-line test condenser with an additional perforated tube to simulate up to 30 active tubes. Results were obtained for smooth tubes wire-wrapped tubes and dropwise-coated tubes. The average outside heat-transfer coefficient for 30 smooth tubes was 0.64 times the Nusselt coefficient fo the first tube. A total of eight wire-diameter and wire-pitch combinations were tested: 1.6-mm-diameter wire wrapped at 16 mm, 7.6 mm and 4 mm wire pitches, 1.0-mm-diameter wire wrapped at 8 mm, 4 mm and 2 mm wire pitches, and 0.5-mm-diameter wire wrapped at 4 and 2 mm wire pitches. The best bundle performance was obtained when the tubewere wrapped with 1.0-mm-diameter wire at a wire pitch of 4 mm. This combination resulted in an average outside heat-transfer coefficient for 30 tubes that was 1.15 times the value computed for the first time using the Nusselt theory. The average outside heat-transfer coefficient for 30 dropwise-coated tubes was 1.1 times the value of the heat-transfer coefficient for the first tube in the tube bundle. Using either wire-wrapped tubes or dropwise-coated tubes, it is possible to significantly reduce the condenser surface area and overall size. Keywords: Inundation, Smooth, wire-wrapped tubes. (Theses).

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 28 (thesis year 1 983) a total of 10,661 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 197 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 28 reports theses submitted in-1983, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental apparatus was designed, constructed and instrumented in an effort to systematically and carefully study the condensation heat-transfer coefficient on a single, horizontal tube. A smooth, thick-walled copper tube of length 133.5 mm, with an outside diameter of 15.9 mm and an inside diameter of 12.7 mm was instrumented with six wall thermocouples. The temperature rise across the test section was measured accurately using quartz crystal thermometers. The inside heat-transfer coefficient was determined using the Sieder-Tate correlation with leading coefficient of 0.029. Initial steam side data were taken at atmospheric pressure to test the data acquisition/reduction computer programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-phase flow heat exchangers are vital components of systems for power generation, chemical processing, and thermal environment control. The art and science of the design of such heat exchangers have advanced considerably in recent years. This is due to better understanding of the fundamentals of two-phase flow and heat transfer in simple geometries, greater appreciation of these processes in complex goemetries, and enhanced predictive capability through use of complex computer codes. The subject is clearly of great fundamental and practical importance. The NATO ASIan Thermal-Hydraulic Fundamentals and Design of Two-Phase Flow Heat Exchangers was held in Povoa de Varzim (near Porto), Portugal, July 6-17, 1987. participating in the organization of" the ASI were the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Clean Energy Research Institute, University of Miami; Universidade do Porto; and the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Eng ineer ing, and Mechanics, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The ASI was arranged primarily as a high-level teaching activity by experts representing both academic and industrial viewpoints. The program included the presentation of invited lectures, a limited number of related technical papers and discussion sessions.
