Book Synopsis Experimental Heat Transfer to Blunt Axisymmetric Bodies Near the Limit of Continuum Flow by : J. Leith Potter

This book was released on 1962 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of average heat-transfer rates to blunt-nosed, axisymmetric, cold-walled bodies in a low-density, hypervelocity wind tunnel are given. Stream density was such that Reynolds and Knudsen numbers, based on nose radius and conditions immediately behind the bow shock, varied from 5 to 20 and 0.11 to 0.056, respectively. Thus, scaling on the basis of Knudsen number, these conditions may be said to simulate a body of one-foot nose radius at as much as 315,500-ft altitude. Heat-transfer rates are discussed in relation to the flow model successfully used in the past for studies of flows of high Reynolds number. In this context, it was found that measured heat-transfer rates to hemispheres below shock-layer Reynolds numbers of 20 exhibited a decreasing nondimensionalized rate relative to that estimated by methods appropriate to high Reynolds number conditions. This behavior is in accord with various applicable theories. Rates for the flat-faced bodies showed no tendency to decrease, and they were somewhat higher than predicted by theories for high Reynolds numbers.
Book Synopsis The Shock Shape and Shock Detachment Distance for Spheres and Flat-faced Bodies in Low-density, Hypervelocity, Argon Flow by : A. B. Bailey

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made to determine the pressure distribution, shock shape, and shock detachment distance for spheres and the latter two characteristics for flatfaced bodies in a heated argon flow. The modified Newtonian approximation for the pressure distribution, which is strictly an empirical relationship, gives good results when applied to the first 60 degrees of a hemisphere under conditions where the body boundary layer and the shock layer merge. The natural flow visualization produced as a result of the high total temperature and consequent excitation of the argon enabled this study to be made. Photographs taken of the shocks generated by a series of spheres and flat-faced bodies were analyzed with a photo-densitometer to determine the shock shape and shock detachment distance. The blast analogy predicts a difference in the shape of shocks in argon and air at high Mach numbers and Reynolds numbers. An empirical relationship proposed by Love was used to calculate the shock shape in air for Mach numbers corresponding to those of the present investigation. (Author).

Book Synopsis Propulsion Re-Entry Physics by : Michał Lunc
Download or read book Propulsion Re-Entry Physics written by Michał Lunc and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Propulsion Re-Entry Physics deals with the physics of propulsion re-entry and covers topics ranging from inductive magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) propulsion systems to launch systems and orbiting maneuvering systems. Problems of re-entry aerodynamics are considered, along with interaction problems in hypersonic fluid dynamics. Comprised of 31 chapters, this volume begins with a detailed account of the quasi-steady adiabatic vaporization and subsequent exothermic decomposition of a pure monopropellant spherical droplet in the absence of free and forced convection. The discussion then turns to results of calculations on MPD machines working in the intermittent and in the continuous mode; inductive plasma accelerators with electromagnetic standing waves; and spherical rocket motors for space and upper stage propulsion. Subsequent chapters focus on pulsed plasma satellite control systems; drag and stability of various Mars entry configurations; hypersonic laminar boundary layers around slender bodies; and effects of an entry probe gas envelope on experiments concerning planetary atmospheres. This book will appeal to students, practitioners, and research workers interested in propulsion re-entry and the accompanying physics.

Book excerpt: The second edition of Extrusion is designed to aid operators, engineers, and managers in extrusion processing in quickly answering practical day-to-day questions. The first part of the book provides the fundamental principles, for operators and engineers, of polymeric materials extrusion processing in single and twin screw extruders. The next section covers advanced topics including troubleshooting, auxiliary equipment, and coextrusion for operators, engineers, and managers. The final part provides applications case studies in key areas for engineers such as compounding, blown film, extrusion blow molding, coating, foam, and reprocessing. This practical guide to extrusion brings together both equipment and materials processing aspects. It covers basic and advanced topics, for reference and training, in thermoplastics processing in the extruder. Detailed reference data are provided on such important operating conditions as temperatures, start-up procedures, shear rates, pressure drops, and safety. A practical guide to the selection, design and optimization of extrusion processes and equipment Designed to improve production efficiency and product quality Focuses on practical fault analysis and troubleshooting techniques
