Book Synopsis More Than Money by : D. Clayton Mayes
Download or read book More Than Money written by D. Clayton Mayes and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mentorship is as old as human behavior and one of our most powerful methods of learning. So why aren't more working adults using this process to advance their careers? Mentorship is the process of learning through an extended dialgoue between an experienced person with a rich fund of knowledge and expertise and one who has less knowledge and experience in a particular field or profession. The threat to mentorship in the workplace may come in the form of "Baby Boomer" retirements - radically shrinking the pool of experienced professionals who make up the mentor population. The time is now to start the transfer of your organization's knowledge legacy so that succeeding generations can grow and develop. The goal of this book is to provide information that will motivate more working adults to become involved in mentorship and see this process as essential for achieving career success. Readers will learn that there are people with information in every workplace who can provide the means to be more successful. With the insights provided here, you will become more observant and opportunistic and take advantage of the sea of knowledge that surrounds you. Contrary to popular belief, growth through mentorship is not an accident and does take effort. Mentoring partners must learn to produce positive results for themselves; whether they are in an organization with a mentoring program or an entrepreneur plying their trade alone. Numerous examples drawn from real-life mentoring partners will give the reader a flavor for the benefits that can be derived from mentorship. Material in the book is drawn primarily from the feedback of hundreds of mentor/mentee pairs in formal programs and interviews with informal mentoring partners representing a wide range of job categories and employees at many levels in a variety of industries, businesses and public service agencies.

Book Synopsis Closing the Asylums by : George Paulson, M.D.
Download or read book Closing the Asylums written by George Paulson, M.D. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most significant medical and social initiatives of the twentieth century was the demolition of the traditional state hospitals that housed most of the mentally ill, and the placement of the patients out into the community. The causes of this deinstitutionalization included both idealism and legal pressures, newly effective medications, the establishment of nursing and group homes, the woeful inadequacy of the aging giant hospitals, and an attitudinal change that emphasized environmental and social factors, not organic ones, as primarily responsible for mental illness. Though closing the asylums promised more freedom for many, encouraged community acceptance and enhanced outpatient opportunities, there were unintended consequences: increased homelessness, significant prison incarcerations of the mentally ill, inadequate community support or governmental funding. This book is written from the point of view of an academic neurologist who has served 60 years as an employee or consultant in typical state mental institutions in North Carolina and Ohio.
Book Synopsis Firefighter Fatality Retrospective Study by : U. S. Fire Administration
Download or read book Firefighter Fatality Retrospective Study written by U. S. Fire Administration and published by FEMA. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis sought to identify trends in mortality and examine relationships among data elements. To this end, data were collected on firefighter fatalities between 1990 and 2000. (For further information, see the "Methodology" section or the Appendix.) Using this analysis, better targeted prevention strategies can be developed in keeping with the USFA's goal to reduce firefighter deaths 25 percent by 2005. In contrast to the annual USFA firefighter fatality reports, this analysis allowed for comparisons over time to determine any changes in firefighter mortality, with a depth of scrutiny not present in earlier analyses.
Book Synopsis A Tattoo on my Brain by : Daniel Gibbs
Download or read book A Tattoo on my Brain written by Daniel Gibbs and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-16 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Daniel Gibbs is one of 50 million people worldwide with an Alzheimer's disease diagnosis. Unlike most patients with Alzheimer's, however, Dr Gibbs worked as a neurologist for twenty-five years, caring for patients with the very disease now affecting him. Also unusual is that Dr Gibbs had begun to suspect he had Alzheimer's several years before any official diagnosis could be made. Forewarned by genetic testing showing he carried alleles that increased the risk of developing the disease, he noticed symptoms of mild cognitive impairment long before any tests would have alerted him. In this highly personal account, Dr Gibbs documents the effect his diagnosis has had on his life and explains his advocacy for improving early recognition of Alzheimer's. Weaving clinical knowledge from decades caring for dementia patients with his personal experience of the disease, this is an optimistic tale of one man's journey with early-stage Alzheimer's disease. Soon to be a documentary film on MTV/Paramount +.
