Book excerpt: Writer and photographer Gary Lantz has always felt most at home in what the Osage used to call the “heart stays” country—the southern edge of the Flint Hills tallgrass prairie in Oklahoma’s Osage County. It’s a place of grassy mounds with lots of rocks underfoot and clusters of crooked little oaks providing shade. It started young, his long-lasting love affair with a landscape that unnerves the uninitiated a little, mostly because it just seems so empty, and it has persisted through his entire life. As proud grasslanders know, the prairie is biologically fulfilling, unique, and increasingly rare: biologists from the National Park Service and the Nature Conservancy agree that a healthy prairie remains one of the most ecologically diverse and dynamic ecosystems on this planet—as well as one of the rarest left on earth. This landscape that once inspired rapturous exclamations from travelers headed west on horseback now mostly exists in fragments exiled from each other by cropland, cities, and interstate highways. Historically, tallgrass prairie stretched from Canada to Texas, from central Kansas to Indiana. Now the last major expanse of tallgrass occurs in the Flint Hills, a verdant landscape extending in a north-south strip across eastern Kansas and into northern Oklahoma’s Osage County. In these essays, Gary Lantz brings the beautiful diversity of the prairie home to all of us.

Supported by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care, a quality improvement organization that trains and accredits over 1,000 hospitals for heart failure, chest pain, and atrial fibrillation management, it presents a description of the problem, defines the measures of success, elucidates the implementation of interventions required to be successful, and provides the tools to insure quality HF management. Fully updated and revised, the Third Edition discusses administrative and regulatory issues relating to HF management; pathophysiology and demographics of acute HF; emergency department assessment and treatment of acute HF; admission, treatment, and disposition of acute heart failure in short stay units; and resources such as clinical pathways, algorithms, and patient education tools that can be directly utilized in various healthcare settings. Short Stay Management of Acute Heart Failure, Third Edition, is an essential guide for cardiologists, emergency physicians, and hospital administrators, as well as for institutions wishing to be recognized as quality heart failure centers.

Controllable and Uncontrollable Risk Factors Best Diet A Totally No – Oil Diet Fish Oil In Your Diet Lowering Your Triglyceride Level Oatmeal As a Healthy Cereal White Bread or Brown? What about Soybean? How to Make Sprouts What, No Meat? What about Tomatoes? Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction One of the main reasons why I decided to write this book is because while doing research on heart ailments and natural ways in which to keep healthy, I found out some terrible statistics, which are not going to be told to you by your friendly neighborhood cardiologist. Did you know that about 24.1 million people in the USA, alone suffer from heart disease? I thought that that was a terrible number, till I found that the statistics of Asian countries like India [60 million!] and China statistics were even more. One out of every four people in Tasmania suffered from heart disease, and high blood pressure. They hold the world record for the most number of people suffering from heart disease. That was surprising, because I was under the impression that this could possibly have been the prerogative of those European countries, like Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, where food eaten every day was still in Emperor sized helpings, especially in the form of smorgasbords and jumbo sized sandwiches. But then here are some reasons why heart disease statistics in these particular countries is comparatively low. First of all, they have a very healthy genetic background. Next, they believe in lots of exercise and do not bother much about sedentary lifestyles. These people are fit and fine because they cycle to work. On the other hand, many people were slowly and steadily developing heart diseases all over the world today do so because of bad diet. Also, a paucity of antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E in your diet, as well as an excess of cholesterol and triglycerides are definitely major contributing factors for possible heart disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reign of Terror continues to fascinate scholars as one of the bloodiest periods in French history, when the Committee of Public Safety strove to defend the first Republic from its many enemies, creating a climate of fear and suspicion in revolutionary France. R. R. Palmer's fascinating narrative follows the Committee's deputies individually and collectively, recounting and assessing their tumultuous struggles in Paris and their repressive missions in the provinces. A foreword by Isser Woloch explains why this book remains an enduring classic in French revolutionary studies.

Book excerpt: The Oxford Textbook of Medicine: Cardiovascular Disorders is selected from the cardiology section of the renowned Oxford Textbook of Medicine. An authoritative resource on heart disease and beautifully illustrated in full colour, it is an essential guide to best practice in managing and preventing a wide variety of cardiovascular disorders. Chapters on arrhythmias, acute coronary syndromes and cardiac surgery have been completely revised and updated, together with new chapters on blood vessels and the endothelium, cardiac physiology, syncope and palpitations, and cardio-renal syndrome. Heart failure and heart disease in pregnancy are thoroughly treated, while imaging chapters evaluate the latest techniques and illustrate all clinical features with detailed images. In 46 finely crafted chapters with clear essentials, experts in cardiovascular disease review the essentials of diagnosis, guidelines and practice and provide a wealth of practical advice for use in clinical situations. In addition, background information on epidemiology, pathogenesis and pathophysiology encourages a fuller understanding of conditions, and more than 350 full colour images help with diagnosis. This essential reference tool supports all medical professionals seeking a general outline of treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disorders, and fills the gap between undergraduate teaching texts and specialist texts for cardiologists. Cardiologists and general physicians will find it immensely valuable when diagnosing and managing heart disease in their day-to-day practice. It is also of usefor trainees in cardiology and general medicine, especiallythose interested in applied cardiovascular pathophysiology.
