Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Fauziya Kassindja, an idyllic childhood in Togo, West Africa, sheltered from the tribal practices of polygamy and genital mutilation, ended with her beloved father's sudden death. Forced into an arranged marriage at age seventeen, Fauziya was told to prepare for kakia, the ritual also known as female genital mutilation. It is a ritual no woman can refuse. But Fauziya dared to try. This is her story--told in her own words--of fleeing Africa just hours before the ritual kakia was to take place, of seeking asylum in America only to be locked up in U.S. prisons, and of meeting Layli Miller Bashir, a law student who became Fauziya's friend and advocate during her horrifying sixteen months behind bars. Layli enlisted help from Karen Musalo, an expert in refugee law and acting director of the American University International Human Rights Clinic. In addition to devoting her own considerable efforts to the case, Musalo assembled a team to fight with her on Fauziya's behalf. Ultimately, in a landmark decision in immigration history, Fauziya Kassindja was granted asylum on June 13, 1996. Do They Hear You When You Cry is her unforgettable chronicle of triumph.

She had one mission now: Uncover her birth family's secrets and reveal the truth about the woman who sold Zoey’s siblings for cold, hard cash. Even if that means working closely with her former partner. Sheriff Murdoch Lake. His rugged good looks were the stuff that made women stop and stare—but the moment Murdoch opened his mouth, Zoey remembered exactly why the man had always infuriated her like no other. ZOEY DAVIESS WAS DESTINED FOR FAR MORE THAN LIFE IN LITTLE GARRITY, TEXAS. —HE, MURDOCH MICHAEL LAKE, HAD BEEN SENT THERE TO ROT. Fourteen months ago, nearly losing Zoey showed Murdoch the depth of his feelings for the confounding woman. She owned his heart and soul. But he'd never confess that. The woman has real bite, after all. Zoey was the long-lost sister of a billionaire. She was meant for a different kind of life than what Murdoch could offer. Murdoch vowed to keep his hands off, no matter how she burned him. And always would. The past harbors more pain, fear, and trauma than Zoey could ever have imagined. With each passing moment, the evil draws closer. Until Zoey might just lose the people she loves most…

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity has been given access to the secrets of oneness, but we need to learn how to work with them. Working with Oneness brings mysticism into the center of the marketplace, into the world of business and technology, and shows how we can work with it in everyday life. The dynamic energy of oneness has the potential to heal the planet and revolutionize life more than we can imagine, but it requires our individual participation and awareness to become fully alive. The energy of oneness is already present but waiting to be lived, and Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee provides a blueprint for working consciously with this energy. As we understand how our consciousness affects the whole fabric of life, the potential for real global change comes alive. Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee stresses the need to change from hierarchical, patriarchal power structures to organic patterns that allow for the free flow of energy and ideas. Through these patterns the dynamic energy of oneness can become part of everyday life. Working with Oneness includes a number of additional important topics, including: the changing energy structure of the planet and how to work with it; the power of individual consciousness; the danger of the desire for spiritual security; the return of joy to everyday life; the awakening of the heart of the world; a new understanding of magic; the use of the imagination; and mystical participation in life with the energy of oneness. Working with Oneness offers guidance on how to work with the energy of oneness, to learn how to participate in life free of the patterns of the past, so that the divine can come alive in every moment of every day. Working with Oneness is mystical activism at its most potent. “There is a growing and eager audience waiting for a vision of unity consciousness... Working with Oneness offers a salutary antidote to worn-out antagonisms. It challenges readers to join other kindred souls in a mystical activism that can bring new hope to humanity.” —Spirituality & Health “A book filled with wonder and the kind of insights that can leap out to your heart and gladden you for having read them. It's words are simple and straightforward—always a blessing—but its message it the most vital and important for the time in which we live. I recommend it.” —David Spangler, author, Blessings: the Art and the Practice

Book excerpt: One of the world’s foremost parenting experts offers a revolutionary guide for translating a crying baby’s urgent messages. Like many new parents, Priscilla Dunstan was at her wit’s end trying to ease the crying of her colicky infant son. Then she made a startling discovery: His sounds varied according to his needs, and she could decipher their meaning by tracking the sound as a physical reflex. Unlike learned languages, Dunstan soon realized, every newborn from birth to three months possesses a natural, reflexive communication system for signaling hunger, tiredness, the need to burp, lower gas, and general discomfort. Thirteen years of research culminated in the Dunstan Baby Language, now made available to all caregivers in Calm the Crying. Helping readers learn to recognize and respond to exactly what their baby needs, Dunstan’s remarkable program covers ten sounds in total that can be identified and used to calm a baby. Brimming with diagrams and photographs, Calm the Crying reduces the frustration of wasted time spent addressing the wrong needs. A baby’s cries are a powerful form of communication—now made even more powerful because the message can be understood loud and clear.

Book excerpt: In a culture that tells men to suppress instead of express, join bestselling author, speaker, and leader Jason Wilson (featured in the award-winning ESPN documentary The Cave of Adullam) as he calls us to unlearn society's definition of masculinity and discover the power of engaging with our emotions. For decades, Jason was losing the war within--the internal battle that many men wage on a daily basis. He struggled to combat his toxic thoughts and emotions, communicating without composure, and ultimately hurting himself and his loved ones. When Jason began to release years of unresolved trauma, he learned how to acknowledge his emotions and express them in a healthy way. He discovered that he was strengthened by transparency and vulnerability, which taught him to forgive, trust, and love without limitations. Soon, Jason's newfound practices began to heal his relationships and transform his life. Throughout his journey of opening up, Jason became a better husband, father, and leader--and you can, too. Supported by Biblical teachings, the lessons that Jason shares in Battle Cry teach us that we can all be empowered to break through what we've been through. Jason calls us to become better versions of ourselves, equipping us with the mental and spiritual weapons needed to redefine modern masculinity and showing us how to: embrace our emotions rather than be ruled by them win internal battles before they become external wars break free from misconstrued masculinity and embrace our humanity communicate more effectively with the people in our lives heal trauma from our past in order to live our fullest lives in the present Battle Cry proves that it's possible to live beyond the limitations of your mind and finally experience the full life you've always longed for. What are you waiting for? It's time to win the war within.

Book excerpt: Margaret gives searing and compelling insights into the isolated world of one deaf child who grew up in an era uneducated about deafness. The results were the very tragic consequences that shaped her life. The Silent Cry is a shocking story of molestation and abandonment, neglect and a multitude of falsely diagnosed mental illnesses. As a child, Margaret could not hear and her speech was unintelligible. These problems made it impossible for her to communicate with those around her. She then attended a school for the deaf and learned her primary language-American Sign Language, thus enabling her to communicate with peers and teachers. Her family was not willing to learn American Sign Language and this further compounded her awareness of isolation in a hearing world. She much later learned English, however, it is not her primary language as many like to believe. Because of her Deaf boyfriend?s suicide attempt, she was suddenly compelled to leave Delavan, Wisconsin School for the Deaf. The school has served deaf and hard of hearing students in the state of Wisconsin since 1852. WSD has an average annual enrollment of 180 students in grades pre-K through 12th. WSD stresses quality of service to students and parents. We focus on meeting the needs of students with disabilities in the areas of academic, adaptive education, vocational and social skills development. When she was pushed into a hearing world without verbal or writing communication skills at the age of eighteen, she was not able to blend in. Finally, she determined that she was abandoned on the streets where she was preyed upon by pimps who force her into prostitution. This is a chilling account of the exploitation of a person with a disability, but it is also a story of remarkable courage and triumph of the human spirit. A Truly amazing transformation! The work ends with the author's nervous and joyful reunion with self-awareness and self-confidence. It is also a beautiful love story involving many cultures. The main cultures consist of two different languages, two difference races, and the bridges built between them making this story unique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth century saw the rise of new and more sympathetic understanding of animals as philosophy, literature, and art argued that animals could feel and therefore possess inalienable rights. This idea gave birth to a diverse movement that affects how we understand our relationship to the natural world. The Cry of Nature details a crucial period in the history of this movement, revealing the significant role art played in the growth of animal rights. Stephen F. Eisenman shows how artists from William Hogarth to Pablo Picasso and Sue Coe have represented the suffering, chastisement, and execution of animals. These artists, he demonstrates, illustrate the lessons of Montaigne, Rousseau, Darwin, Freud, and others—that humans and animals share an evolutionary heritage of sentience, intelligence, and empathy, and thus animals deserve equal access to the domain of moral right. Eisenman also traces the roots of speciesism to the classical world and describes the social role of animals in the demand for emancipation. Instructive, challenging, and always engaging, The Cry of Nature is a book for anyone interested in animal rights, art history, and the history of ideas.
