Book excerpt: Ginger truly loved Robert, but how could she commit to marriage? You see, she had never resolved her feelings for Ross, the man that her own spoiled sister Bonnie had snatched away from her. Despite her heartbreak, Ginger had felt obliged to return home when her mother lay on her death bed. But after the funeral she vowed never to return. Six long years later she received Ross's letter begging her to return. Robert argued to no avail against her impulsive decision to drop everything and return. Upon arriving back at her childhood Idaho home, Ginger was immediately alarmed at the deteriorated condition of both her sister and the farm. She also slowly became aware of inconsistencies in the stories of how Bonnie's three daughters had died, especially the twin's drowning. Was there a more sinister explanation? If there was a murderer on the loose, was anyone safe? She reluctantly became immersed in the ongoing crisis at the farm. She had little time to think about Robert, and felt that her own life was indefinitely on hold. How would she ever find her way back to the safe, secure, relationship with Robert?

Set in Mississippi at the height of the Depression, this is the story of one family's struggle to maintain their integrity, pride, and independence in the face of racism and social injustice. And it is also Cassie's story—Cassie Logan, an independent girl who discovers over the course of an important year why having land of their own is so crucial to the Logan family, even as she learns to draw strength from her own sense of dignity and self-respect. * "[A] vivid story.... Entirely through its own internal development, the novel shows the rich inner rewards of black pride, love, and independence."—Booklist, starred review

Book excerpt: '"That bright star high up in the sky, symbolizes that small light at the end of the tunnel, that ray of hope in the darkness; that small chance that even in the hardest of times, things will get better." The creation of the Earth saw the life of new souls; humans, dwarves, elves and dragons. But the differences in the races brought war and destruction about this peaceful land. It was then that the Creator created a soul that had enough power to save the entire planet and its race's. This one soul had enough magic to save all the souls the creator had placed upon the earth. Yet there was a flaw in the plan that the lord did not foresee, although the soul had the power to save the earth, they had the power to destroy it too.'

Book excerpt: Who are we? Where do we come from? What is our purpose? These questions have been asked throughout our existence. Ever since the first campfire was lit, we have asked ourselves if we could do better. And we have wondered what lies in the future. Exposed is a collection of poetry written by John McCarthy, first as therapy and then as an outlet for a vast expanse of emotions. His perspective has been shaped by thirty years of police and investigation experience and by being an avid hunter and nature enthusiast. This collection is the culmination of a four-year journey that begins with despair over a broken marriage and ends in redemption. Its an honest reflection of lifes experiences and of a search for a higher calling. This poetic journey begins with Somethings Wrong, in which two strangers in a long marriage pass each other as life goes by. They know everything about each other, but they do not really know the things that matterparticularly how to say the things that need to be said. The authors melancholy path takes us through periods of reflection and self-pity, but it closes on a note of hopefulness. Exposed reveals the poets enlightenment and purposehis love of the mountains and the sea, and inspiration passing through old, lonely country towns that time has forgotten. Experience the world through McCarthys eyes and words: the tragic, the sadness, the lonely, the joy, the redemption, and the beauty.

Book excerpt: This thoughtful, poetic book uses metaphors and beautiful imagery to explore the reasons for our tears. In a soft voice, Mario asks, “Mother, why do we cry?” And his mother begins to tell him about the many reasons for our tears. We cry because our sadness is so huge it must escape from our bodies. We cry because we don’t understand the world, and our tears go in search of an answer. Most important, she tells him, we cry because we feel like crying. And, as she shows him then, sometimes we feel like crying for joy. This warm, reassuring hug of a book makes clear that everyone is allowed to cry, and that everyone does.

Book excerpt: Astyanax is thrown from the walls of Troy; Medeia kills her children as an act of vengeance against her husband; Aias reflects with sorrow on his son's inheritance, yet kills himself and leaves Eurysakes vulnerable to his enemies. The pathos created by threats to children is a notable feature of Greek tragedy, but does not in itself explain the broad range of situations in which the ancient playwrights chose to employ such threats. Rather than casting children in tragedy as simple figures of pathos, this volume proposes a new paradigm to understand their roles, emphasizing their dangerous potential as the future adults of myth. Although they are largely silent, passive figures on stage, children exert a dramatic force that transcends their limited physical presence, and are in fact theatrically complex creations who pose a danger to the major characters. Their multiple projected lives create dramatic palimpsests which are paradoxically more significant than their immediate emotional effects: children are never killed because of their immediate weakness, but because of their potential strength. This re-evaluation of the significance of child characters in Greek tragedy draws on a fresh examination of the evidence for child actors in fifth-century Athens, which concludes that the physical presence of children was a significant factor in their presentation. However, child roles can only be fully appreciated as theatrical phenomena, utilizing the inherent ambiguities of drama: as such, case studies of particular plays and playwrights are underpinned by detailed analysis of staging considerations, opening up new avenues for interpretation and challenging traditional models of children in tragedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Fauziya Kassindja, an idyllic childhood in Togo, West Africa, sheltered from the tribal practices of polygamy and genital mutilation, ended with her beloved father's sudden death. Forced into an arranged marriage at age seventeen, Fauziya was told to prepare for kakia, the ritual also known as female genital mutilation. It is a ritual no woman can refuse. But Fauziya dared to try. This is her story--told in her own words--of fleeing Africa just hours before the ritual kakia was to take place, of seeking asylum in America only to be locked up in U.S. prisons, and of meeting Layli Miller Bashir, a law student who became Fauziya's friend and advocate during her horrifying sixteen months behind bars. Layli enlisted help from Karen Musalo, an expert in refugee law and acting director of the American University International Human Rights Clinic. In addition to devoting her own considerable efforts to the case, Musalo assembled a team to fight with her on Fauziya's behalf. Ultimately, in a landmark decision in immigration history, Fauziya Kassindja was granted asylum on June 13, 1996. Do They Hear You When You Cry is her unforgettable chronicle of triumph.
