Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to survey the coordinators of university sexual violence prevention activities in the United States to determine if the American College Health Association's guidelines for comprehensive sexual assault prevention on college campuses are being implemented. Methods: Of the 1854 four-year colleges and universities in the United States a random sample of 656 were surveyed using a three-wave data collection method to optimize the return rate. Of that sample, 22 were excluded due to incorrect contact information, thus leaving 634 potential respondents. Of that sample, 324 responded for a response rate of 51.1% (324/634). Results: Approximately 90% of respondents reported that there was at least one sexual assault reported on their campus in the previous year. The respondents also reported that 73% had an established sexual assault prevention program, while the remaining 27% either don't have a program or are in the process of establishing a program. Benefits and barriers to implementation of sexual assault prevention activities were investigated. There was no statistically significant relationship between any of the coordinator or university characteristics chosen for study and the number of barriers or benefits perceived by the program coordinators. None of the chosen research variables predicted the number of ACHA guidelines that had been implemented. Conclusions: Sexual assault is a problem on college campuses. Schools need to take a public health informed approach in creating their prevention programming. There must be assessment, implementation, and evaluation of programming. Funding and human resource allocation to this process is vital. While the future of Title IX enforcement and investigation is unclear, universities should continue to focus on sexual assault reduction as a priority.
