These can therefore be treated by medicines and therapies The natural healing method began in the absence of extensive technologies with the idea that all the answers for health may be found in nature or rather, the deviation from nature. Therefore, the health of the body can be restored by correcting the aberration and thereby restoring balance. This is the area that will be covered in this volume. Allopathic techniques have their place in the art of healing. However, we should not forget that the body is a grand achievement of the spirit and built into it is the capacity to maintain itself and heal itself.

Book excerpt: Archaeologists primarily address disease, illness, and health through biological studies of human remains. These studies convey physical suffering in the past, but without broader social context, they do not document how culture responds to illness. As a result, we lack explanations for the relationship between physiological health and social health care. To resolve this problem, it is necessary to develop a model for an archaeological investigation of health care that incorporates both biological and social factors to analyze not only how individuals died, but also what factors helped them to survive in the past. This dissertation acts as a case study for an archaeology of health care through an investigation of the ancient Egyptian village of Deir el-Medina, the home of the workmen who built the royal tombs during the New Kingdom (1550 BCE-1080 BCE). I use an interdisciplinary approach that combines texts from the site with osteological data from the villagers' skeletal remains in order to document both the major stresses on health at the site and Deir el-Medina's health care networks. I accomplish this through a bioarchaeological analysis of health using the systemic stress model. Comparisons between Deir el-Medina and other sites in Egypt as well as broader sites in the Western Hemisphere Project show that health was relatively high at Deir el-Medina, but that infectious disease and occupational stress were primary factors impacting the villagers' health. The villagers at Deir el-Medina utilized a complex health care system in order to respond to these stresses. The ancient Egyptian government provided rations for medical professionals and subsidized sick leave for the workmen. These medical professionals would have used a logic of contamination to explain the transmission of disease and treat illnesses. In conjunction with this, personal networks involving reciprocal caretaking between colleagues and close family members ensured the sick had provisions and nursing. This research offers evidence for one of the world's oldest documented health care systems. It demonstrates how illnesses were perceived and treated in ancient Egypt, and finally, it offers a model for an archaeology of health care.

Book excerpt: 2021 Reprint of the 1930 Edition. Illustrated. The Ebers Papyrus, also known as Papyrus Ebers, is an Egyptian medical papyrus of herbal knowledge dating to circa 1550 BC. Among the oldest and most important medical papyri of ancient Egypt, it was purchased at Luxor in the winter of 1873-74 by Georg Ebers. It is currently kept at the library of the University of Leipzig, in Germany. The Ebers Papyrus is written in hieratic Egyptian writing and represents the most extensive and best-preserved record of ancient Egyptian medicine known. The scroll contains some 700 magical formulas and folk remedies. It contains many incantations meant to turn away disease-causing demons and there is also evidence of a long tradition of empiricism. The papyrus contains a "treatise on the heart". It notes that the heart is the center of the blood supply, with vessels attached for every member of the body. Mental disorders are detailed in a chapter of the papyrus called the Book of Hearts. Disorders such as depression and dementia are covered. The descriptions of these disorders suggest that Egyptians conceived of mental and physical diseases in much the same way. The papyrus contains chapters on contraception, diagnosis of pregnancy and other gynecological matters, intestinal disease and parasites, eye and skin problems, dentistry and the surgical treatment of abscesses and tumors, bone-setting and burns. The "channel theory" was prevalent at the time of writing of the Ebers papyrus; it suggested that unimpeded flow of bodily fluids is a prerequisite for good health. It may be a considered a precursor of ancient Greek humoral pathology and the subsequently established theory of the four humors, providing a historical connection between Ancient Egypt, ancient Greece, and medieval medicine.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the potential role of environmental change on the diet and physiological health of individuals during the First Intermediate Period (2200 – 2040 BC) in ancient Egypt. Ancient inscriptions from Egypt recount a horrific famine, which coincided with socio-‐political changes that had severe consequences for the population. In the past, it has been proposed that this was directly linked to environmental change, especially low Nile flow. An alternative view is that the Egyptian people were aware of historic environmental fluctuations and low Nile levels, and therefore were able to manage their resources accordingly without enduring lasting biological consequences. It is hypothesised that there will be significant differences in dental and skeletal markers during the First Intermediate Period compared with the periods preceding and following it. The hypothesis is tested by analysing diet as reflected in dental macrowear, microwear texture, and antemortem tooth loss. In addition, non-‐specific biological stress indicated by cribra orbitalia and porotic hyperostosis is examined. The skeletal samples represent twelve cemetery sites from the northern and southern regions in ancient Egypt. Data was collected and analysed from 769 skulls. The samples spanned five periods to detect temporal changes to contrast to the First Intermediate Period. These were the Predynastic period (4500 – 3150 BC), the Early Dynastic period (3150 – 2700 BC), the Old Kingdom (2700 – 2190 BC), the First Intermediate Period (2200 – 2040 BC), and the Middle Kingdom (2040 – 1674 BC). The findings from this research show no significant changes in dental conditions or skeletal indicators during the First Intermediate Period compared to the periods immediately before nor after. Contrary to expectations, the Early Dynastic period stood out as exhibiting differences in multiple markers indicative of good physiological health from the consumption of animal protein, and variety in the diet compared with other periods. These results suggest that the effect of environmental changes over time on the diet and health of the population was moderated by other factors such as the socio-‐ political economy and technological innovations. It supports the supposition that populations can effectively manage resources during recorded environmental fluctuations and opens avenues for future research.
