Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organized Health Work in Schools With an Account of a Campaign for School Hygiene in Minnesota In 1900 only 8 cities in America had any organized health work in schools. Since that time over 400 cities have organized departments for the health supervision of school children, and as Dr. Leonard P. Ayres remarks, "this development is without parallel in the history of education." To quote further from Dr. Ayres, "No school (in 1900) had ever heard of a school nurse, for no city in the world employed one; but to-day (1911) 76 American cities have corps of school nurses as permanent parts of their educational forces and 48 cities employ staffs of school dentists." A few years ago the public schools made no provision for the education of the blind, crippled, or mentally deficient, but now in New York City alone there are more than 100 classes for mentally peculiar children, while arrangements are rapidly making for the care of crippled and other classes of physically handicapped children. It was only as recently as 1909 that the first open-air school for tuberculous children was opened in Providence, but to-day such schools may be found in something over 40 cities. The special study of the mentally deficient child has engaged the attention of public school educators for a period of less than three years, but at present plans are rapidly making in many progressive towns and cities for the careful study of such children by the employment of exact psychological methods. All these facts indicate that the physical care of children is engaging the attention of the serious-minded school men. Yet, while all these facts are interesting and significant, it must not be forgotten that no uniform methods of health organization in schools have been evolved, and that there still exist the most widely divergent beliefs and practices in this respect. Health work in schools needs standardization. The experiences of cities already organized in school health matters ought to be studied by other places attempting such organization for the first time. In general it may be safely stated that schools receive what they pay for. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Our resources have been spent lavishly to make secure our liberties and the freedom of the world. Such a supreme crisis in our history revealed inspir ing patriotism, but also a pathetic weakness in our citizens. Out of 06 men who were examined on the first draft, a vast army of men were rejected on physical grounds. A large proportion of these physical defects might have been corrected or prevented if the schools had been doing their part to train children to conserve and improve their health. Such a serious flaw in public education must challenge the efforts of educators throughout the land. Several States, realizing the gravity of the situation, have recently passed laws making physical education obligatory and requiring a more extensive and practical teaching of hygiene.' The war has compelled us to recognize, as we never did before, the fundamental importance of health education as preparedness, not only for military service, but also for happy and efficient participation in civil life. Contrary to tradition and popular belief, country children have been found to be as defective physically and in many cases more defective than city children. Comparatively little has been done so far for the health of country children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions for a Program for Health Teaching: In the Elementary Schools Probably no field of education within the last two years has shown more originality and vitality than that of health education. Experiments have been made not only by individual teachers but by groups of teachers on a large scale. In the midst of such inter esting developments the need of a sound program of health educa tion extending through the grades has become insistent. In this pioneer field certain ideals, principles, and methods have earned merited approval, but the work done has been limited to particular problems. Every serious student of the health situation feels this keenly, but the time is not yet ripe for a definite and complete course of study in health teaching. The whole field is still in a somewhat uncertain state. Educators in general have lost faith in the old fashioned methods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Air and the School House The scope of the immediate discussion is confined to the human right to physical health. To prove that, as a whole, human health is miserably in arrears of its attain able possibilities requires no elaborate demonstration. The shortness, the ailments, the suffering, the ineffective ness of human life are seen upon all sides and are too often read in the faces of the multitude. The unseen and the unread evidence of that lapse are as much greater than the seen and the read as are the hidden tales of the sea vaster than those spread on its surface. Some students of anatomy and physiology affirm that the normal length of animal life, brute and human, is five times the period required for the full development of the skeleton, or frame work, upon which the body is built. Because of the intelligence with which man is endowed, his superior ability to protect himself by housing and cloth ing against stress of cold and heat and storm, because of his range and choice of foods adapted to his varied needs, his available aids in medical and surgical science and prac tice, and skilful nursing and serviceable drugs, man should logically far outstrip the brute in the proportion of his actual to his theoretical length of days. The reverse is woefully true. The full development of the human frame is reached at the age of twenty-one years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Inspection of Schools This volume is a revision of Medical Inspection of Schools., published by the Russell Sage Foundation in October, 1908. The first edition was exhausted within three months, and the volume was reprinted in January, 1909, and again in December of the same year. During the three and a half years that have elapsed since the first publication of the volume there has been a three-fold increase in the number of American cities having systems of medical inspection of schools. In rapidity and extent, this development has been unequalled by that of any other educational movement in America. During these few years physical examinations have become an integral part of all the more important systems of medical inspection. The school nurse, almost unknown four years ago, is now an important adjunct of the systems of scores of cities. Dental inspection, then in its infancy, is now being carried on in nearly 200 cities. At that time three states and the District of Columbia had legal provisions for medical inspection. Now the number has increased to 20. These conditions have resulted in an increasing demand for a revision of the original text, and this has led to the preparation of the present volume. While covering much of the matter treated in the original book, the text has been entirely re-written, and the description of methods and forms, as well as the quantitative material, brought down to date. Like its predecessor, this book aims (1) To be of practical use; (2) to be a reliable source of information as to what is now being done and how it is being done; (3) to be frank in its admission of problems and difficulties as yet unsolved;(4) to avoid all dogmatism, saving that involved in the statement of actual experience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Health of the School Child The papers here reprinted are offered as a contribution to the practical side of the medical inspection of schools. In every civilised country the doctor and the school child are coming closer together. In Scotland, no less than in England, the interest is widespread and intense. This must be my apology for the present papers. The first paper was read at a Congress of sanitary administrators, official and unofficial. The second was read at a Congress of the Parents' National Union, where the majority were in a position to choose for their children the best education afforded by our present-day schools. The third was read before the Royal Society of Edinburgh, by whose kind permission it is now printed. On all three occasions, I found, as indeed in many places elsewhere in Scotland, that the Royal Commission on Physical Training (Scotland) and the Committee of Physical Deterioration had aroused the minds of every class of the community to the importance of personal hygiene in schools. The medical supervision of school children appeals to every class of the community. It is responded to by every class. It is no longer a topic for special pleaders. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Plays for School Children: As Developed by Teachers and Pupils in Public Schools of Greater New York Forty New York Public Schools were invited to com pete, a prize being given each day to the school making the most graphic presentation of the value of milk. Milk facts were presented in various ways, the informal play proving perhaps the most popular. On five days' notice, teachers in the public schools, building upon the facts in a pamphlet entitled Milk, the Master Carpenter, which is reprinted here, were able to make a splendid showing. What they did with out being health or dramatic experts, other teachers can do. Their success marks merely the beginning of a much wider use of the amateur health play. Though some of the authors were teachers of Domestic Science, many were grade teachers. All very generously donated their manuscripts, to make this book possible, and through it to give the plays to the country. Children love the dramatic form and the plays will be found useful in teaching the formation of health habits. The health lesson is made effective when the child who is living the Game of Health -is drinking milk and eating cereal, and fruit or green vegetables daily, sleep ing with windows open and bringing weight up to stand ard-takes in such plays a leading part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health in the School: Or Hygiene for Teachers Looked at from the point of view of self-interest, teachers have every motive for preventing whatever may interfere with the children's work. There is nothing more brain-dulling than impure air, and the purblindness which arises from defective light management and improper working position. School-stress translated into plain language means, in the vast majority of cases, ignorant school management. It is of little use to study new educational methods unless the material on which they are to be tried is brought into a reasonable condition of physiological receptivity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Health Administration In general, the thought is that before we can say what the public schools are or should be doing for individual and public health we must determine as accurately as possible with present-day statistics what the health needs and problems of individuals and the nation actually are, and how serious the health problem is, compared with other grave problems of life. The public school's share in the responsibilities for public health amelioration is very great, and growing, due to the lack or ineficiency of other insti tutions for such a purpose, to the admirable conditions of control in a state institution and with compulsory attend ance and general community support, and to the fact that such a large share of health mal-adjustment is due to health ignorance, and the lack of adequate health habits and ideals which it is so largely the special function of the public school to replace with positive health qualities. The princi pal problems of life, whatever they may be, and to be discovered only by a study of life through surveys or any other efficient means, furnish the problems of public edu cation.
