Book excerpt: Evaluates the risks and human health impacts of asbestos and other fibrous minerals Despite continuous efforts to eliminate asbestos from commercial use, it remains a serious occupational and environmental hazard. Health Risk Assessment for Asbestos and Other Fibrous Minerals provides a rigorous discussion of risk assessment methodology for elongate mineral particles, covering basics, theory, models, and practical applications, enabling readers to participate in carrying out efficient and informed health risk assessments, to estimate potential adverse effects for exposed populations, and to determine the acceptability of risks at a given level of exposure. Coverage includes: Mineralogy, health effects, pathology, exposure assessment, modeling, and characterization of risks for asbestos and similar toxic materials Necessary integration of epidemiology, toxicology, industrial hygiene, and environmental health expertise when performing a health risk assessment Emerging and not-well-known hazards, e.g. erionite and other naturally occurring fibrous minerals Case studies and examples of risk calculations to guide readers through the process and help them in their own practical application of methodological concepts Health Risk Assessment for Asbestos and Other Fibrous Minerals is a highly practical, single source reference on the subject for occupational and public health professionals, industry and government regulators, industrial hygienists, and risk assessors, along with epidemiologists, biostatisticians, toxicologists, and other scientific professionals.

Now in its third edition, this bestseller explores the pathological complexities of asbestos-related disease and examines how asbestos induces diseases in biological systems. The book also discusses the types of instruments and methods available for evaluation of the content of asbestiform minerals in products, air, water, surface areas, and tissue. It explains the relevance of each of these applications and gives readers the tools to evaluate data in the future. Edited by leading authorities on the subject and with contributions from a team of international experts, this book takes a cross-disciplinary approach and an authoritative review of the history, pathology, epidemiology, sampling, and analysis of asbestos. Backed up with photos and numerous diagrams, tables, and photographs, it features case studies, methodologies, and sampling/analytical schemes that put learning into context. Fully up-to-date and featuring four brand new chapters covering asbestosis and immunity, asbestos litigation and surgical and non-surgical management of mesothelioma, this book remains the most comprehensive source of information on asbestos and the only guide the reader will ever need to own. This essential text will appeal to any professional at any level who requires the latest expertise in dealing with asbestos. Book excerpt: Asbestos is the commercial name for various mineral silicates associated with numerous respiratory diseases, notably mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. This book examines risk assessments, health implications and impacts on the environment of asbestos. Chapter One provides a summary of exposure during abatement/removal of asbestos-containing floor tile and mastic. Chapter Two discusses the epidemiological patterns of environmental asbestos-related disease. Chapter Three reviews the reduction of anti-tumor immunity caused by asbestos exposure. Chapter Four summarises current knowledge about the putative role of asbestos exposure in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma carcinogenesis. Chapter Five determines the impact of malignant mesothelioma (MM) using average life years lost and lifetime healthcare expenditures in Taiwan. Chapter Six reviews recent perspectives on both asbestos-related pleuritis and anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-related vasculitides. Chapter Seven clarifies subjects for protective policies against asbestos disaster and the meanings of local government asbestos measures in the case of Japan. Chapter Eight includes an overview of the mineralogical and morphological characterisation of asbestos in Argentina.

Asbestos is a group of 6 different fibrous minerals that occur naturally in the environment. All forms of asbestos are hazardous, and all can cause cancer. This profile includes: (1) The exam¿n. and interpretation of toxicologic info. and epidemiological eval¿s. on asbestos to ascertain the levels of human exposure for the substance and its health effects; (2) A determination of whether adequate info. on the health effects of asbestos is available or in the process of development to determine levels of exposure that present a significant risk to human health; and (3) Where appropriate, identification of toxicologic testing needed to identify the types or levels of exposure that may present significant risk of adverse health effects in humans. This book was released on 2010-01-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although asbestos is no longer mined in the United States, prior and ongoing exposures to asbestos continue to contribute to respiratory diseases, including mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. To examine ongoing issues and concerns in this field, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) drafted a research roadmap, Asbestos Fibers and Other Elongated Mineral Particles: State of the Science and Roadmap for Research, that provides an overview of the state of the science and a plan for future research in areas including toxicology, mineralogy, epidemiology, and exposure assessment. The focus of the proposed research is on clarifying the relationship between human health effects and the physical and chemical characteristics of a wide range of elongate mineral particles. In 2008, NIOSH asked the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council to form a committee to provide a review of the scientific and technical quality of the January 2009 draft NIOSH Roadmap document. The present volume provides the committee's assessment of the Roadmap and recommendations for strengthening its utility for NIOSH, other federal agencies, the private sector, and other stakeholders.

Book excerpt: In conjunction with drafting comprehensive legislation concerning compensation for health effects related to asbestos exposure (the Fairness in Asbestos Injury Act), the Senate Committee on the Judiciary directed the Institute of Medicine to assemble the Committee on Asbestos: Selected Health Effects. This committee was charged with addressing whether asbestos exposure is causally related to adverse health consequences in addition to asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. Asbestos: Selected Cancers presents the committee's comprehensive distillation of the peer-reviewed scientific and medical literature regarding association between asbestos and colorectal, laryngeal, esophageal, pharyngeal, and stomach cancers.
