Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several decades, Desiree Leigh Thompson lived beneath the shadow of trauma and abuse. Having grown up in a violent, dysfunctional household and experiencing her first sexual assault at age twelve, she went on to suffer from several mental health disorders and self-destructive behaviours, forever trying to hide herself out of shame and self-loathing. As a result, she lost all sense of self-worth, self-identity, and belonging. However, all of this began to change when she found the bravery to begin psychotherapy and walk along the path to healing. Through a supported process of gaining awareness and letting go, she was able to emerge, at last, into self-love. In Healing Worthlessness, a courageous book about trauma and recovery, Thompson shares her story in detail in hopes of helping other survivors find their own healing paths. She also addresses the global issue of intimate partner violence, the oppression of women under patriarchy, and the social and cultural reasons why society at large often suppresses and denies stories of abuse. She also overviews the research behind childhood trauma and its links to adult dysfunction, repeated victimization, and chronic health repercussions. As Thompson herself discovered, it is never too late to escape the legacy of abuse and change your life; if, as a survivor, you have a desire to change—to heal your wounded relationship with yourself, and subsequently, your relationships with others—then what you need (and deserve) is encouragement and support to help you get there. Healing Worthlessness is a multifaceted restorative tool, a call to action, and an invaluable resource for helping survivors escape toxic patterns, push past their limitations, feel joy again, and connect deeply with themselves and those they love.

Welch empowers readers to live in light of the gospel of God's grace, which breaks the lingering power of shame. Providing immediate application to every reader's spiritual journey, Welch's book guides men and women to seek freedom from the shame of their own relational and sexual brokenness. Shame controls far too many of us, and the Bible addresses the issue of shame from start to finish. Shame Interrupted reminds readers that God cares for the shamed, and that through Jesus, they are covered, adopted, cleansed, and healed. Shame Interrupted creates a safe place to deal with shame, shining a light on the dynamics of sin and how it is overcome through the power of Christ. By identifying with our shame on the cross, Jesus gives believers freedom from the paralyzing effects of sin and shame. As someone who is familiar with the effects and crushing weight of shame—and the overwhelming freedom found in Christ—Welch invites readers to find confidence in the cleansing work of Christ in this raw and brutally honest book. By examining the depths of the human heart, Welch has made accessible invaluable tools for counseling, soul care, and pastoral work. Shame Interrupted dwells on hope and healing, providing gospel answers to difficult questions.

Book excerpt: Description Often, the emotions associated with the feeling of being powerless are as a result of one's fundamental flaw as a human being. Individuals can have a staggering level of low self-esteem, causing thoughts and feelings of worthlessness and despair to rise to the surface. They endure and suffer so much. It is essential too for them to address these thoughts and feelings that they carry within, to acknowledge their existence, and work towards facing them head-on. Healing can be more challenging because it is mainly about the individual and having the courage to face their fears. It's not about any of the specific actions involved in the healing process. Feeling powerless has many forms and manifests itself within individuals in various ways. It differs from human to human; however, there are a few standard features shared across each human that has ever felt it. Some of these features include strong physical responses, uncomfortable thoughts, and troublesome behavioral patterns. This feeling of powerlessness has many components. It is achingly painful and echoes within. It can even affect an individual in ways that can paralyze attempts to curb it. Consequently, it can cause the individual to withdraw emotionally and physically disconnect themselves from others. I chose to write this book, Power to Heal My Whole Self, to direct attention to this topic because many persons do not truly understand how being powerless feels. Those who do are too afraid to talk about it and confront it. I struggled through the majority of my life with these feelings of being unworthy or good enough to be loved. Despite the progress I have made in acknowledging these feelings, even I still, at times, being drawn back to the same sentiments time and time again. One thing I failed to understand during my discovery phase was the greater importance of other individuals suffering from the same feelings. Thankfully, working with my clients helped me to understand this. Similarly, through them, I began to question things: Why hadn't they ever addressed these feelings? Why were they just comfortable with masking their feelings of not feeling good enough? Once I began helping them accept themselves, they felt worthy, lovable, and their existence was meaningful. It spurred me on to want to continue to help others as well. I wanted to be there with them on their journey of self-realization; to guide them towards realizing their dignity, pride, and self-worth. Power to Heal My Whole Self explores why individuals trapped in suffering cannot improve their lives. It explains why they need to understand what being powerless is, where it comes from, and how to move towards the healing process. About the Author I have been in the Education field for about 20 years with my background in Early Childhood Development. I was fortunate to have exciting opportunities; working at Carnegie Hall in New York as the School Programs Coordinator for Link Up. Working with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Government in Connecticut, and as a substitute teacher while continuing my education. I am a single mother of one son, whom I raised from the time I was widowed, and my son was still an infant. Later in life, I had found my purpose: I could listen, I could teach, and I could share. I developed a greater love for teaching, which led me to create a class in 2012 for a drug and alcohol treatment program. Power To Heal My Whole Self is not only my journey but, most importantly, what I taught for five years to many individuals. I hope to continue helping others by sharing my story. I strive to help anyone who has ever struggled to find healing and to guide them into understanding what is holding them back from living.

Book excerpt: "We are constantly making an appraisal of ourselves. The exhausting work of evaluating our worth is present just below the surface in every life experience. Unfortunately, our self-image has been severely injured by the sins we commit and the sins committed against us. Managing this injury depletes our souls, breaks relationships with loved ones, and drives us away from intimacy with God. Worthless? is a biblical guide that reveals the true nature of our injury. It describes a goal for healing that is more shaped by Jesus than cultural norms. Worthless? unearths the storehouse of healing in the gospel and maps a pathway for practices that metabolize those gospel realities for everyday life."--Page 4 of cover

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is witnessing a rapid rise in the number of victims of human trafficking and of migrants—voluntary and involuntary, internal and international, authorized and unauthorized. In the first two decades of this century alone, more than 65 million people have been forced to escape home into the unknown. The slow-motion disintegration of failing states with feeble institutions, war and terror, demographic imbalances, unchecked climate change, and cataclysmic environmental disruptions have contributed to the catastrophic migrations that are placing millions of human beings at grave risk. Humanitarianism and Mass Migration fills a scholarly gap by examining the uncharted contours of mass migration. Exceptionally curated, it contains contributions from Jacqueline Bhabha, Richard Mollica, Irina Bokova, Pedro Noguera, Hirokazu Yoshikawa, James A. Banks, Mary Waters, and many others. The volume’s interdisciplinary and comparative approach showcases new research that reveals how current structures of health, mental health, and education are anachronistic and out of touch with the new cartographies of mass migrations. Envisioning a hopeful and realistic future, this book provides clear and concrete recommendations for what must be done to mine the inherent agency, cultural resources, resilience, and capacity for self-healing that will help forcefully displaced populations.

Book excerpt: Abortion continues to be a hot topic in politics, women’s rights, and medical practice. But for the eight to ten million American Christian women who have had one, abortion is a spiritual issue as well, raising questions of life and death, heaven and hell, grief and loss. Writing from her own experience, Kim Ketola sheds light on one of the darkest and most neglected personal issues of our time: the widespread need for healing and spiritual recovery after abortion. “After abortion brought the worst trouble into my life I had ever known,” writes Ketola, “I just couldn’t see my way free to believe in God’s love.” With a compassionate heart, Ketola offers ten true stories of healing promise from the Bible to help women answer the most common spiritual torments they face: Is abortion a sin? Does God hate me? Where can I turn in my shame and distress? How could I ever tell anyone the truth? And more. Inspired by Romans 6:4--“just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life"--this is a definitive resource to help women see themselves and God anew and--finally--to find spiritual healing.

Book excerpt: Praise for Healing: The Path to Freedom: What Michael has apparently discovered and teaches is that how we interact with life, moment by moment, particularly our feeling experience, is visibly at the core of everything. From the broken things to the extraordinary things, it is nowhere else but the place that no one thinks to lookliterally in ourselves. The remarkable, almost unique aspect of Michaels work is that everything he does and teaches points you back to the truth of your own tangible experience. If you want to entertain the possibility of real change, this can be an excellent place to do it. If you seek to preserve your status quo, well, this may not be the place. The work is not easy, though it is simple and clear. Its also not necessarily a quick fix, though some experience rapid results. Expect change and be prepared to see that life is not (only) what you thought it was. In todays increasingly small world, sticking ones head in the sand is becoming a less and less viable option as hiding places become hard to find. Michaels work is all about strongly engaging life and finding the only reliable refuge: your true self. Marc Glassgold

What are the psychological and theological issues surrounding the phenomena of a tortured self-identity and diminished self-esteem? Through the study of King's life and witness, Building King's Beloved Community seeks to inspire and suggest a prophetic practice that will broaden and inform the paradigm for pastoral caregiving in responding to the needs of oppressed people in any context--especially where Christianity is practiced.
