Book excerpt: The book, Economic Empowerment of Women in the Islamic World, discusses the economic, social, and political rights and status of women in Islam, which is theoretically given by the Islamic Jurisprudence (Shariah law). The chapters in this volume will address historical practices in comparison to the status of women in the contemporary Muslim world. Men and women in Islam, regardless of their age, social class, and education, are equal as citizens and individuals, but not identical in their rights and responsibilities. It can be observed from Islamic history that in the early age of Islam, women were given full confidence, trust, and high responsibilities in leadership, educational guidance, and decision-making.This volume will try to clarify the confusion in the status of the women in Islam that is presented by the media, as it is assumed that theoretical Islamic empowerment of women bears little relation to the real conditions of women in modern Muslim societies. It has been widely claimed in the media that Muslim women suffer more than men in Muslim societies and communities in terms of insecurity, domestic abuse, and low access to education and medical care. It is also stated in the press and media that absence of good governance also results in gender inequality and violation of the rights of Muslim women. This volume also aims to provide the solutions for the empowerment of women in the Islamic world. We assumed that without good governance, the status of women is not likely to improve. Muslim women have the potential to play a fundamental role in curbing corruption, social ills, violence, and crime in the Muslim world. This volume will make the case that in order to achieve stability and prosperity, the government must ensure a platform for women to participate in decision-making and hence benefit from the rights they are accorded in Islam.By covering a range of perspectives on the economic lives of Muslim women around the world, it hopes to shed light on the problems faced and to offer possible solutions to the empowerment of women in the Islamic world.

Book excerpt: One day, the Prophet Muhammad was describing Khadija’s virtue, and he pointed to the heaven and earth with his finger and stated, “Mary, mother of Jesus, is the best of the women of the heavens, and the worthiest woman still living on this earth is Khadija, daughter of Khuwaylid.” Khadija’s life is a source of great inspiration to believers, especially women. She is an excellent example of how one can give to the cause of Islam one’s time, energy, wealth and life. Her story is a reminder to believers to live purposeful lives and, in our prayers, we should remember Khadija and the whole family of the Prophet for their sacrifice and dedication. It was precisely their sacrifice, dedication and hard work that made it possible for Islam to reach all the four corners of the world and allowed the Quran to be preserved in its original form. May Allah be pleased with them all. Once when the Prophet Muhammad was in the Cave of Hira with the angel Jibril, or Gabriel, Jibril saw from afar that Khadija was coming towards the Cave. He said to the Prophet: “Khadija is coming here. She has brought some food and water for you.” And then he added: “When she comes in, give her the greetings from her Lord and tell her that there will be a house made of pearls for her in Paradise where there will be neither hardship nor any clamour.” When Khadija arrived, the Prophet said to her: “Here is Jibril. He is giving greetings to you from your Lord and he himself is greeting you.” Khadija replied: “God is peace and He is the source of all peace! May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. And my greeting to Jibril!”

Book excerpt: Challenging conventional notions about the place of women in Muslim societies, the Bihishti Zewar (Heavenly Ornaments) gives life to the themes of religious and social reform that have too often been treated in the abstract. This instructional guidebook, used by the world's largest population of Muslims, is a vital source for those interested in modern Indian social and intellectual history, in Islamic reform, and in conceptions of gender and women's roles. The Bihishti Zewar was written in northern India in the early 1900s by a revered Muslim scholar and spiritual guide, Maulana Ashraf 'Ali Thanawi (1864-1943), to instruct Muslim girls and women in religious teachings, proper behavior, and prudent conduct of their everyday lives. In so doing, it sets out the core of a reformist version of Islam that has become increasingly prominent across Muslim societies during the past hundred years. Throughout the work, nothing is more striking than the extent to which the book takes women and men as essentially the same, in contrast to European works directed toward women at this time. Its rich descriptions of the everyday life of the relatively privileged classes in turn-of-the-century north India provide information on issues of personality formation as well as on family life, social relations, household management, and encounters with new institutions and inventions. Barbara Metcalf has carefully selected those sections of the Bihishti Zewar that best illustrate the themes of reformist thought about God, the person, society, and gender. She provides a substantial introduction to the text and to each section, as well as detailed annotations.

Book excerpt: This Book “The Lineage of the Prophet Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ” is all about what it is subtitled “The true history of Islam”. Our book describes the circumstances of Huzur’sﷺ inheritance (Virasat e Rasulﷺ), Maula Ali alaihissalam, and from the lineage of Huzur-e-Aqdasﷺ till Maula Ali alaihissalam and twelve Imam till Hazrat Imam Mehdi alaihissalam. Because our lineage begins from Hazrat Imam Naqi alaihissalam as they are our progenitors, we have given the descriptions of their sacrifices in the path of Islam. We have also described their circumstances. The purpose of writing this book is to let the people know the story of torture done on Huzur’sﷺ physical heirs and the nearest companions and the confusions created after the sad demise of Huzurﷺ. After the Prophet, Hazrat Abubakar Siddiq alaihissalam was crowned as a Caliph. After that Hazrat Umar alaihissalam was given this post and then Hazrat Usman-e-Gani alaihissalam was appointed as a Caliph. He also was martyred. After the death of Hazrat Usman-e-Gani alaihissalam, the conditions were very delicate. Due to the conspiracies of Bani Umiyyah, Islam was to be leaned towards the controls of kings. Maula-e-Kainat Hazrat Ali Murtuza alaihissalam was busy collecting the Qur’anic verses. He was deeply sunk into prayers and practices. During this time, big shots of Islam came to him and requested him to shoulder the responsibilities of Islam. He bluntly refused. A meeting of the executive committee (Shura–the executive committee) was convened, and, after a great insistence, Hazrat Ali alaihissalam accepted these responsibilities. And as a result of unanimous agreement, he became one of the selected of the Momins (Mominin Muntakhab). He prevented the people from going wild in their behavior. He had to fight many wars (briefly explained each war inside the book). He turned all the malicious plans of Bani Umiyyah into a great failure. And then how Hazrat Imam Hasan a.s. appointed and after him, Hazrat Imam Husain a.s. The author also included the details of the War of Karbala and incidents that happened after Karbala. This book consists of the life details of all the twelve (12) Imam’s and about their books, works, and much more.

Abdullah passed away before Muhammad (pbuh) was born and was brought up by Amina, his mother. When he was six, his mother passed away and then he was looked after by his loving grandfather Abdul Mutallib. Two years later, Abdul Mutallib also passed away and Muhammad (pbuh) was brought up by his uncle Abu Talib. Muhammad (pbuh) lived a simple life, marrying Khadija when he was twenty five years old. At the age of forty, the first verses came from Allah in the month of Ramadan. The Angel Jibrael brought these first five verses to Muhammad (pbuh). These words were written down by the scribes and memorised by the Muslims. This message continued for twenty three years and is known as the Qu'ran - the word of Allah. The Qu'ran is this pure message that was revealed to Muhammad 1400 years ago. These are the words of Allah that were sent to the prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Allah has guarded it and kept it pure from changes and errors. The purpose or mission of the prophet (pbuh) was to deliver this message to Mankind and to follow its teachings.
