Book excerpt: Site Characterization Sampling and Analysis HMTRI Site Characterization: Sampling and Analysis is an introductory environmental sampling textbook intended for use in community/technical college environmental technology curricula or in industrial training programs. Comprehension of the subject matter is enhanced by associated coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental regulations, and college-level mathematics. The goal of the present textbook is to provide the environmental technician with the knowledge and skills necessary to assist a site characterization project planner in the sampling and monitoring process. Among the tasks the students will learn how to perform are: * assisting the research of a site's background for data that a project manager will use in the development of a site sampling plan * meeting representative sampling objectives and quality control/quality assurance objectives * preparing to go onsite for a sampling event * monitoring a site for potentially hazardous atmospheres * following the sampling plan in collecting samples from various media (e.g., soil, surface water, ground water, and containers) * troubleshooting under unforeseen circumstances * preparing samples for transport to the laboratory * documenting field activities * communicating with laboratory personnel * interpreting lab reports, including the validation of quality control data The text contains photographs and line drawings to help students visualize equipment and processes. Included are instructional aids such as chapter objectives, concept statements before major sections, review questions (as well as application and critical thinking activities) after each section, and a glossary of the terminology.

The same practical approach is found in this new edition, making it an ideal textbook for students and an excellent reference source for professionals. Readers are provided with a broad overview of practices and techniques used in modern hazardous waste management, radiological waste management, underground storage tank management, and biomedical/infectious waste management. Fundamental issues are introduced, including hazardous waste site remediation technology and the application of federal statutes, regulations, programs and policies to the cleanup of hazardous waste sites; pathways and fates and the environmental impacts of released hazardous materials; and the roles of science and technology in the standards-setting processes. The book reviews the application of administrative law, civil and criminal sanctions, the roles of the courts, and the impacts of citizen suits in both historical and current regulatory contexts. Health and safety issues affecting hazardous waste workers are highlighted in a completely new chapter. This is an extremely important section, and an invaluable addition to the book.

Book excerpt: This easy-to-use reference not only provides you with a basic understanding of environmental sampling concepts, but it also provides you with the information you need to perform your tasks with ease and efficiency. Whether you use it to train samplers or take it in the field with you for easy reference, Fundamentals of Environmental Sampling contains information all samplers need to better understand the science of their work. You will review key principles of geology and chemistry, and you will examine typical sampling techniques and their relationship to EPA and ASTM guidelines. The author discusses how these sample collection techniques affect analytical data and how data collection methods affect the validity and defensibility of data in a court of law. In addition, you will examine project management fundamentals, challenges of working in natural environments, and managing data and reporting to the client. Fundamentals of Environmental Sampling covers major sampling media--including groundwater, soil, surface water, and air--and discusses how to choose the right equipment for each job. A list of "must have" tools is included in the author's recommended "Ideal Tool Kit" along with common uses for each, descriptions of usage, and tips on buying them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A common criticism of the remedial investigation/feasibility study process at Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) sites is that too much time and money are spent studying the problem before remediation can be started. A factor leading to this perception may be that the timing, type, and spacing of soil and groundwater sampling at these sites are inappropriate. The purpose of this paper is to propose a 3-step sampling strategy for quickly obtaining sufficient information to make remediation decisions and thus reducing overall characterization costs. The significant element in the strategy is that most of the expensive, time-consuming sampling and analyses using permanent monitoring devices are reserved for the end of the 3-step process as confirmation of the conceptual site model developed as a result of the investigation.
