Book excerpt: The author treats the life and work of the composer in its chronological context, with detailed discussion, illustrated with musical examples, of the major works. The Chronicle is based principally on contemporary newspaper accounts, diaries and correspondence. In both its scale and complexity it is Haydn's greatest masterpiece - The Creation - which provides the major point of interest. The development of the work is traced from the libretto sketch by Baron Gottfried van Swieten which Haydn brought back from London, through the various stages of drafting (many of Haydn's preparatory sketches for the introduction - 'Chaos' - and various numbers in the Oratorio are reproduced as musical examples) to completion and first performance. Its subsequent publication, in 1800, and circulation to subscribers all over Europe was supervised by Haydn himself, and his list of the original subscribers is included as an appendix to the main discussion of the work which was to prove the crowning achievement of the composer's career up to the turn of the century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Western Choral Music explores the various genres, key composers, and influential works essential to the development of the western choral tradition. Author Chester L. Alwes divides this exploration into two volumes which move from Medieval music and the Renaissance era up to the 21st century. Volume II begins at the transition from the Classical era to the Romantic, with an examination of the major genres common to both periods. Exploring the oratorio, part song, and dramatic music, it also offers a thorough discussion of the choral symphony from Beethoven to Mahler, through to the present day. It then delves into the choral music of the twentieth century through discussions of the major compositional approaches and philosophies that proliferated over the course of the century, from impressionism to serialism, neo-classicism to modernism, minimalism, and the avant-garde. It also considers the emerging tendency towards nationalistic composition amongst composers such as Bartók and Stravinsky, and discusses in great detail the contemporary music of the United States, and Great Britain. Framing discussion within the political, religious, cultural, philosophical, aesthetic, and technological contexts of each era, A History of Western Choral Music offers readers specialized insight into major composers and works while providing a cohesive understanding of choral music's place in Western history.

Book excerpt: First Published in 1988. Though many standard musicological reference works document the use of the trombone from its beginning in the middle of the seventeenth century, and then from Mozart to the present, few deal with the intervening years. This book reproduces the texts from two dozen treatises, dictionaries, and encyclopaedias, along with English translations, published between 1697 and 1811. It provides an overview of the use of the trombone during that time in America and seven European countries and examines its use in choral music, opera, symphonic music and military music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume grew out of an international Beethoven conference held in honor of Lewis Lockwood at Harvard University in 1996. Michelle Fillion?s opening essay explores the Mass in C and its turn away from the ?heroic? style of the ?middle-period? works. In ?Beethoven and the Aesthetic State,? Karol Berger reflects on the manner in which the composer?s music often shifts back and forth between a ?real? and an ?imagined? world. William Drabkin examines the role of the cello part in Beethoven's late quartets, particularly in regard to the elusive parameter of texture. Richard Kramer?s reading of the song Resignation (1818) opens new perspectives on the idea of a ?late? style in the composer?s output. ø In ?Beethoven's ?Expressive? Markings,? Leo Treitler demonstrates how seemingly straightforward directions to performers about tempo, mood, or dynamics raise fundamental questions about the relationship between music and language. Michael C. Tusa reviews more than a century of attempts to relate form and content in the last movement of the Ninth Symphony and offers a new interpretation on the idea of the choral finale as a kind of four-movement symphony in its own right. Maynard Solomon?s essay on the ?Diabelli? variations argues that the theme itself, although simple, is by no means trivial and indeed is ?perfectly suited to unpacking issues of firstness and lastness and their interchangeability.? William Drabkin concludes the volume with a review essay on Beethoven: Interpretationen seiner Werke, edited by Albrecht Riethm_ller, Carl Dahlhaus, and Alexander Ringer.
