Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hawthorne I am truly glad that you like the Introduction, for I was rather afraid that it might appear absurd and impertinent to be talking about myself, when nobody, that I know of, has requested any information on that subject. As regards the size of the book, I have been thinking a good deal about it. Considered merely as a matter of taste and beauty, the form of publication which you recommend seems to me much preferable to that of the Mosses.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Hawthorne Do you know that delightful book of myths and fairy tales, The Tanglewood Tales a wonder-book for girls and boys? It is all about Pandora's wonderful box, the Gorgons head, the golden touch of King Midas, Jason's marvelous search for the Golden Fleece, the adventures of Hercules in quest of the Golden Apples, and other delightful classical myths which are nobody knows how old. They are told by Eustace Bright, a. young man just home from college, and a very prince of story tellers. His little cousins are never tired of hearing his marvelous tales. "His stories are good to hear at night," said little Cowslip, "because we can dream about them asleep; and good in the morning, too, because then we can dream about them awake." So you see just how truly delightful they were. But there was really no such person as Eustace Bright. He was made by the pen of a very clever writer indeed, Mr. Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was himself the clever student just home from college, and he told stories for his own amusement to a purely imaginary group of cousins, whom he called by such odd names as Primrose, Periwinkle, Sweet Fern, Dandelion, Blue Eye, Clover, Huckleberry, Cowslip, Squash-Blossom, Milkweed, Plantain, and Buttercup. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Genius of Nathaniel Hawthorne Oirs and of Elizabeth Manning's account of the boyhood of Hawthorne have placed before the world much that is new and valuable concern ing the earlier portion of Hawthorne's life, of which previous biographers could not very well reap the advantage. I have made thorough researches in regard to Hawthorne's American ancestry, but have been able to find no ground for the statements of Conway and Lathrop, that William Hathorne, their first ancestor on this side of the ocean, was directly con nected with the Quaker persecution. Some other mistakes, like Hawthorne' s supposed con nection with the duel between Cilley and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Hawthorne IT will be seen that this volume is really written by Sophia Hawthorne; whose letters from carli est girlhood are so expressed, and so profound in thought and loveliness, that some will of sterner quality than a daughter's must cast them aside. I have tried to weed out those written records of hers (even from 1820) reaching to her last year in 1871, that could give no especial pleasure to any descendant who might come upon them; and I have been astonished to find that there was scarcely one such page. This is the explanation of my return, in the company of the friends of my father and mother, to an old garden, a familiar discourse, and a circle of life that embraced so much beauty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hawthorne's Works The years which Hawthorne passed in England were outwardly the most successful, in worldly prosperity the most abundant, and in other respects among the happiest of his life; forming in the autumn of his ca reer a sort of counterpoise 'to the idyllic period spent at the Old Manse. Of these years, from the spring of 1853 to June of 1860, excepting a part of 1858 and 1859, which interval was chiefly spent in Italy, Our Old Home was the literary outcome. Much of the material composing the sketches in this volume occurs in embryonic form in the English Note Books, which were then still veiled from publicity; but various elements and touches of fancy were sup plied by the author's mood or memory at the instant of writing. His impressions of England, outlined in the note-books and scattered at random through many pages, here assume a connected and artistic shape. To persons on a quest for characteristics, however, each of his books reveals a great many, and it is believed that with the aid of the Notes (both American and Eng lish) the Tales and Romances Will make out a very complete and true picture of his individu ality; and the Notes are often an open sesame to the artistic works. Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the greatest American writers of the nineteenth century, and some of his most powerful work was in the form of fable-like tales that make rich use of allegory and symbolism. The dark beauty and moral force of his imagination are evident in such enduring masterpieces as "Young Goodman Brown," in which a young man who believes he has witnessed a satanic initiation can never see his pious neighbors the same way again; “Rappaccini's Daughter," about a lovely young girl who has been raised in isolation among dangerous poisons; and "The Birthmark," in which a scientist obsessed with perfection destroys the flaw that makes his otherwise flawless wife both beautiful and human.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hawthorne's Country During this time there were winters spent in Salem, preparing for college, and then college days at Bow doin, itself in the same county as Raymond. If Mr. Pickard is fully informed, Hawthorne came every year for his vacations to his home in the wilderness, going back and forth between Salem and Raymond from 1813 to 1825, when he graduated from Bowdoin. According to Hawthorne's recent biographer, George E. Woodberry, the family had returned to Salem three years before Hawthorne's time of gradu ation. Even should this change of residence have completely interfered with his vacations in Raymond, there would still be nine years during which this life in the wilderness exerted its wild charm upon him.
