Download or read book Eskdale Shoot written by William Mutch and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2007-02-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vigilante action is generally deplored, a symptom of the breakdown of law and order, or perhaps - equally serious - a loss of confidence in the integrity of the police. Is it ever justified? The decisive need for the police to retain the community's confidence may be the lesson from Eskdale. Eskdale Shoot is the gripping tale of Peter Thorburn, the newly appointed manager of a forestry firm in the Scottish Borders, who is plunged suddenly into a mire of murder, tampered evidence and bullying interrogation. he wants to live a quiet life and marry, but someone is determined to frame him for a murder. Who? And why? The tale reaches its violent climax in Eskdale. As Peter's belief in the integrity of the police is progressively destroyed, he is forced to resolve the extreme crisis solely with the help of close friends, the only people he believes he can trust, and some Gurkha soldiers from his brother-in-law's regiment.

Download or read book Three Perils of Man written by James Hogg and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of Hogg's longest and also one of his most original and daring works. Gillian Hughes's uncovering of the original manuscript in the Fales Library of New York University in August 2001 allows the editors to produce here a text that reflects Hogg's original intentions. Alongside the two main plots (the supernatural located at Aikwood Castle and the chivalric located at Roxburgh Castle) a series of embedded narratives provides the reader with, amongst other things, pictures of the traditional and timeless world of rural life in which Hogg had grown up and of early Scottish history. The name Sir Walter Scott (used through most of the manuscript) is restored and passages excised from the manuscript or omitted when the printed edition was prepared are included in the editorial apparatus. In several cases Hogg's more daringly explicit language has been brought back where the printed edition has bowdlerised or subdued the expression. The restoration of the name in particular makes explicit how much this novel represents a challenge to Scott's dominance in the portrayal of chivalry and the Middle Ages in general. Any attempt to assess Hogg as a major novelist, and in particular as a major historical novelist, must consider this edition of The Three Perils of Man.

The walks range between 2 and 18 miles, suitable for walkers of all abilities. Highlights include Merrick and the Galloway Hills, Hart Fell and the Devil's Beeftub, Cheviot and the Border Ridge, Arthur's Seat and the River Tweed. Each route provides OS 1:50,000 mapping, information on distance, ascent, time, maximum altitude and terrain, as well as details of any variants or shortcuts. With notes on points of interest along the way as well as on transport and accommodation, the guide gives all the information walkers need. The Southern Uplands is a range that is about as big as the Pennines. It is wild hill country, with over 80 hills of 2000ft or more, and it boasts a real remoteness that is difficult to find elsewhere. All hillwalkers should experience these wonderfully characterful landscapes: green and gentle, but with hidden surprises and remote escapes. The routes are suitable from spring to autumn, and on winter days with good weather and snow conditions.
