Book excerpt: • Real-life scientific adventure • A thought-provoking exploration of how the Endangered Species Act works--and how it fails Thirty years ago, researchers discovered a previously unknown species of bird in the rain-soaked and remote mountains of Hawaii. As they studied the creature--which sported a black mask and was called the po'ouli--they soon learned that its population was shrinking quickly, and they worked frantically to find out what was killing the species and how they might prevent its extinction. This fast-paced account of their work, done in one of the world's most inhospitable environments, describes a stirring fight for survival. It also illustrates the challenge of protecting endangered species in a rapidly changing world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RollerCoaster is a poetic mix of serious and comical interludes .Steeped in emotional complexity from childhood to adulthood, marriage and divorce, raising children, fear and anger, passion and perseverance, losing pets, seeking spirituality, and loving family, this collection of poetry encompasses the depth and diversity of the ups and downs of life and its lessons. From the Canadian North to the Hawaiian Islands to the beaches on the Baja, this poetry ensemble was written with laughter and tears ... sometimes all on the same page. RollerCoaster is a reminder that life is full of highs and lows, moments of joy and sorrow, uncertainty and bold optimism. Rollercoaster by Marion Perrotta, is a collection of poems that capture these events and emotions over the course of 40 years. As a young girl growing up in a small northern town in Alberta, Canada, Perrotta was surrounded by a large and loving family. Yet she felt driven to find a life of her own, leading her to seek refuge in the written word. Poetry allowed her moments of absolute truth to her inner self, and it became her refuge and passion. As life passed, Perrotta continued to retreat to these lines, recording moments of pain and jubilation alike. Now this body of work, collected and saved over all those years, serves as a true reflection of her life: where she's been, what she has learned, and who she has become. Looking up and looking back onto the track over my shoulder, I realize this crazy ride has served to make me bolder. Whether 13 or 93, readers will find truth in these words to which they can relate and will be happy they went along for the ride.

Book excerpt: A Rollercoaster Ride With Brain Injury (For Loved Ones) has been written to assist those who are experiencing a similar tragedy to realize they are not alone. By reading my story it will help them adjust to the monumental changes in their life and that of their injured family member. They will learn that it is sometimes two steps forward and one step back. In the days ahead; they will learn not to take things personally if their brain injured loved one becomes angry or verbally abusive and they will discover the importance of setting boundaries. As well, it is important not to feel guilty if they wish time for themselves or if they occasionally feel frustrated; their life has changed also. Initially the most crucial things to do are to ask the right questions; take control of the situation; be proactive; be their own advocate for their injured family member and realize the necessity of having support. These are vital when battling cognitive and behavioral problems, frustration and anger management difficulties, confusion and short-term memory loss as well as other brain injury impairments. Included with my story are sample cognitive exercises that we used at an early stage in Larry's development which helped immensely in his progress towards recovery. As time goes on they will learn that there are adaptations and adjustments that will be necessary to make for their new life. There will also be many bumps in the road. Any road that is not travelled alone makes the trip much easier. By reading Rollercoaster Ride With Brain Injury (For Loved Ones), the reader will realize they are not alone; many others have travelled the road before them.
