Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a self-help book. It is not meant to make your marriage better. This book is meant to deepen your relationship with Christ and encourage you to have a profound love for Him. As we seek to please Christ, we will necessarily improve the way we treat our spouses. It is our testimony and witness to our spouses of Christ's work in us. Deepening our relationship with Christ will have a direct impact on our interpersonal relationships. The question is how? How do we grow deeper in Christ? Paul in Ephesians 5 provides us with a model - Christ is our head, and we are to submit to Him. Then, Paul writes that this same model is to be used in our marriages. But, Paul also says, "This mystery is great." Our guide for daily Christian living and relating to our spouses in marriage is outlined in Ephesians 5, but it's all a "great mystery." Well, that's a lot of help! The meanings of submission and sacrifice in Ephesians 5 were apparently obvious to both Paul and the original recipients of his letter. The answers can also be found generally by reading the entire Bible. So, how do we decipher the "mystery?" We find in Revelation chapters 2 and 3, known as the letters to the seven churches, a grouping of verses in Scripture which concisely spell out what Christ expects of the church and how Christ sacrifices Himself for the church. This book, then, provides an in-depth study of Ephesians 5 through the lens of Revelation chapters 2 and 3, and applies it to the context of marriage.

Book excerpt: You already know that women and men are different . . . and those differences can make your marriage tricky--and some days, seemingly impossible! So what's the secret? To realize a healthy, passionate and life-giving relationship for the long haul you need . . .love. Not the fairy tale kind of love that lives "happily ever after" once a single measly dragon has been slain. (There's always more than one dragon in real life anyway, right?) The secret is a love that does the work of loving--day in and day out, never giving up or backing down. In Love Works, Holly and Philip Wagner pull back the curtain on their nearly 30-year partnership and invite you to take an honest look at your own relationship. With humor and transparency they demonstrate how you can create an extraordinary and fulfilling relationship --the kind of real and remarkable everyday love that stands the test of time. You will find that your dream marriage ... is truly a labor of love.

Book excerpt: This evaluation of the Army Continuing Education System (ACES) considered the following programs: (a) Tuition Assistance (TA); (b) Functional Academic Skills Training (FAST; (c) Military Occupational Specialty Improvement Training (MOSIT); (d) Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) Leader Skill Enhancement Courses; and (e) the Armed Forces Classification Test (AFCT). The assessment of the effectiveness of these programs is based on their ability to enhance soldier performance and increase the prospects of promotion, as well as to reduce attrition and increase reenlistment. The evaluation data came from a longitudinal administrative database that tracked a three-year accession cohort over a six-year period and an NCO database including self-reported participation in ACES programs, promotion information, and observed performance ratings. The analysis was designed to separate effects of participant characteristics from the effects of the program, and to control for differences in the opportunity and propensity to participate in ACES. Participation in TA and FAST were associated with an increase in the probability of first term reenlistment FAST participation was also associated with lower first-term attrition. Participation in several ACES programs showed positive effects on measures of performance and promotion potential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intentionally excluded from formal politics in authoritarian states by reigning elites, do the common people have concrete ways of achieving community objectives? Contrary to conventional wisdom, this book demonstrates that they do. Focusing on the political life of the sha'b (or popular classes) in Cairo, Diane Singerman shows how men and women develop creative and effective strategies to accomplish shared goals, despite the dominant forces ranged against them. Starting at the household level in one densely populated neighborhood of Cairo, Singerman examines communal patterns of allocation, distribution, and decision-making. Combining the institutional focus of political science with the sensitivities of anthropology, she uncovers a system of informal networks, supported by an informal economy, that constitutes another layer of collective institutions within Egypt and allows excluded groups to pursue their interests. Avenues of Participation traces this informal system from its grounding in the family to its influence on the larger polity. Discussing the role of these networks in meeting fundamental needs in the community--such as earning a living, reproducing the family, saving and investing money, and coping with the bureaucracy--Singerman demonstrates the surprising power these "excluded" people wield. While the government has reduced politics to the realm of distribution to protect itself from challenges, she argues that the popular classes in Cairo, as consumers of goods and services, have turned exploiting the government into a fine art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of ego development developed when psychoanalysis did not fulfill all the initial hopes during its early period of prominence. Clinicians--psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and counselors--realized that they needed to know more than their patients' or clients' psychopathology or normalcy and their psychosexual behavior and drives. The method for scoring sentence completions presented in this manual was originally developed for a study of women and adolescent girls. By the time it was first published in 1970, however, the method had already come into use in studies of men and boys. Since then, it has been used with widely varying samples, and the test has been translated into several other languages. This wide adoption testifies to the need for such a test. The present version of the manual incorporates three major improvements: * it is based on data from, and is intended for use with, both males and females, * its format is easier to use, and * the examples cited reflect current public attitudes. The format of the scoring manual for the Sentence Completion Test (SCT) is radically changed from the original, making it easier to find the correct rating for a response. The rating scale itself is kept simple and the basic concept of ego development is the same. A tutorial is included to assist in calculating the Total Protocol Ratings (TPRs). ALTERNATIVE BLURB!!! The Washington University Sentence Completion Test, which was developed by Jane Loevinger, is a free-response, semi-projective instrument for the assessment of ego development. The first manual for administering and scoring the test was published in 1970. In addition to its widespread use in the United States, it has also been adopted for use in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, India, and South Africa. The WUSCT has been used for research in the fields of adolescent personality development, moral development, infancy and parenting, family and gender studies, multiculturalism, religion, psychopathology and psychotherapy, vocational studies, and social and organizational psychology. It is most frequently used by researchers and practitioners in psychology, counseling, social work, and education. This book represents a revised edition of the WUSCT scoring manual, including all items in the 1981 forms, which were revised for use with both men and women. The content reflects current social attitudes, which have changed on some topics since the publication of the original 1970 manual. Although there have been minor changes in terminology, the conception of ego development is unchanged, and the stages of the construct are essentially the same. The format of the scoring manual, however, has been radically changed for ease of use in rating responses. (The rating scale itself, which is the same for all items, is kept simple.) A tutorial is included to assist in calculating the Total Protocol Ratings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on data collected through in-depth fieldwork observation and interviews in Bai Township, this book examines how women with disabilities in rural Southwest China compensate for their disability identity through marriage. As the first book to theorize the married life of rural-based women with different types of disabilities, it provides a more holistic picture of their marital life by tracing the marriage process from mate selection to wedding ceremony, reproduction and role performance. It also generates a substantive theory grounded in the real experiences of women living with disabilities with Jing Yang arguing that these women are not passive victims in the marital process, but active agents who endeavour to minimize the risk of abuse and maximize security and satisfaction in their marriage. By examining the effects of fertility, patriarchy and village society on women with disability, this book will be of huge interest to students and scholars of many disciplines, including disability studies, sociology, social work, women's studies and Chinese culture and society.

It provides an overview of both past and present modeling results. The authors focus on pair formation (marriage) and two-sex models with different forms of the marriage function -- the basis of couple formation -- and discuss which of these forms might make a better choice for a particular population (the United States). The book also provides results on model analysis, gives an up-to-date review of mathematical demography, discusses numerical methods, and puts deterministic modeling of human populations into historical perspective.
