Book Synopsis Bradford by : Patricia Trainor O'Malley
Download or read book Bradford written by Patricia Trainor O'Malley and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1996-10-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 225 years, the town of Bradford, Massachusetts, led an independent life on the Merrimack River. Stately homes lined its main roads, a classic New England common graced its center, and high on a hill stood Bradford Academy, the town's best-known institution. In November 1896, Bradford's long independence came to an end when the town's voters agreed to annexation by the city of Haverhill. Through the camera's eye, readers can stroll through the old town from the bridge to the Common, east along Salem Street and west to the railroad depot. They can visit Ward Hill, the once-sleepy farming community whose transformation to a planned factory village triggered the annexation.
Download or read book Wilbraham written by Coralie M. Gray and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1674, William Pynchon of Springfield purchased land extending to the Springfield Mountains from the Nipmuc Indians. This area, called Minnechaug or Berryland, became the town of Wilbraham with its incorporation in 1763. The name Wilbraham is derived from the towns of Lesser and Greater Wilbraham, located in England, near Cambridge. The town is located in western Massachusetts in the Pioneer Valley, which is a part of the Connecticut River Valley. Today, it is a vibrant town with an active population involved in local history, sports, and its historical heritage.Wilbraham, a unique collection of more than two hundred vintage images, reveals how the area started as a rural town-with mills located along the rivers of its northern and southern borders and with agriculture spread between the two rivers. This volume also shows how Wilbraham evolved into a residential community, why the town holds a three-day Peach Festival each year, and how the Wesleyan Academy moved to the center in 1823 and became an integral part of the town.

Book Synopsis Greeks of the Merrimack Valley by : E. Philip Brown
Download or read book Greeks of the Merrimack Valley written by E. Philip Brown and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Merrimack Valley became home to Greeks after the great immigration to the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. After its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1832, Greece had inadequate resources for its citizens, which led to much hardship. Many of these refugees came to the Merrimack Valley in search of a better living. They settled in Haverhill, Lawrence, and Lowell, Massachusetts, or Concord, Manchester, and Nashua, New Hampshire, where they secured jobs in factories and mills. Those who were unable to gain employment in the manufacturing industries went into the service sector; others became self-sufficient, building restaurants, shoe shops, and grocery stores. Although they suffered discrimination because of their distinct language and culture, they were not deterred; instead, they remained focused, went about their activities in peace, and contributed immensely to the socioeconomic development of their newfound home.

Book excerpt: Originally meant to trap bad spirits, bottle trees arrived in the U.S. with the African slave trade and first took root in the South. Now it's a popular art form, a national phenomenon that's showing up at garden shows, craft fairs and farmers markets. Garden writer and photographer Felder Rushing has encountered thousands of bottle trees and other glass garden art in his travels across America and around the world. In BOTTLE TREES he presents 60 of his favorites, from the backyards of Mississippi to the Chelsea Flower Show to the glass fantasies of Dale Chihuly. With humor and affection he tells the stories behind the photographs: the history and lore of bottle trees and glass sculpture, and the inspired people who make them.

Download or read book Townie written by Andre Dubus and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2012-02-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I've never read a better or more serious meditation on violence, its sources, consequences, and, especially, its terrifying pleasures, than "Townie." It's a brutal and, yes, thrilling memoir that sheds real light on the creative process of two of our best writers, Andre Dubus III and his famous, much revered father. You'll never read the work of either man in quite the same way afterward. You may not view the world in quite the same way either.--Richard Russo, author of "Empire Falls."
