The common name for these reptiles comes from the contrast between their black and white coloring. The Argentine black and white tegu is described here along with some of its defining features and facts. - The black and white look of these tegus is due to the contrast between the black body and the white bands or stripes that run along the back and the tail. They share a trait with many other reptiles, the forked tongue, and have a sturdy, muscular body. - The black and white tegus native to Argentina are among the largest of any tegu species. Some individuals may reach even bigger sizes, but on average they reach 3-4 feet in length and 10-15 pounds. - Tegus eat a wide variety of different foods. Their diet consists of both animal and plant products. They could eat anything from insects and worms to birds and eggs to fruit and vegetables. - Characteristics: People generally attribute intelligence and inquisitiveness to these lizards. They can live in burrows and are nocturnal, but during the warmer months you can find them out and about during the day. - Argentine black and white tegus inhabit a variety of environments, from forests to grasslands to savannas. Because of their versatility, they can flourish in both tropical and subtropical climates. - Ecological concerns have been raised about the introduction of the Argentine tegu, which has become an invasive species in some areas. They may have an effect on the native animal and plant life. - Because of their eye-catching appearance and placid demeanor, Argentine black and white tegus are sometimes traded as exotic pets. However, they need special treatment, such as a large enclosure with the right temperature and humidity.
