Here is the dictum of Modern Theology: "Apply criticism to the Gospel narratives: educe thereby a Jesus without miracles: and the whole world of culture will adore him." It sounds plausible, but it is a promise which cannot be performed. For the Gospel of the Apostles is wedded with its characteristic standpoint and its miracles. They are historically indivisible. The Gospel of the Apostles is a monument of history that defies all attempts at modernisation or reconstruction. You must accept it or reject it in its entirety. No impartial student can eliminate from this integral whole the miracles or treat the viewpoint of Jesus as superseded, whilst placing his person in the foreground. For, once again, the whole historical picture and the whole outline of the life of Jesus is bound up with miracle. The miraculous is in organic unity with him. Indeed, by psychological law, his whole mental penetration into the future and the thoughts of others, was nothing else than a miracle. Attempt the critical process of weeding out the "tares" of miracles from the life of Jesus, and you will find yourself logically compelled to root up also the wheat of his words as well. If consistent, you will be driven to abandon the whole of his life-history. The Gospel Records confront us with this issue: If the miracles really happened, then the gospels are authentic documents of an objective Divine Revelation. Are the miracles legendary only, then the Gospels themselves are Apocrypha of dubious historical value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracles in the New Testament The main part of this book consists of a critical examina tion of the miracle-stories of the New Testament, leading to the hypothesis that the original events underlying those traditions need not be regarded as miraculous. This is prefaced by an attempt to define the belief in miracles, and followed by an estimate of some of the theological results of its rejection. It must not be thought that, because the constructive part of the book (pp. 211-218) is so short, it is nu important. It was inevitable, from the nature of the case, that the detailed criticism of the miracle-stories should form the bulk of the argument. But criticism is throughout regarded as subordinate to construction. There would be little point in discussing the problem of miracles except as a step towards a formulation of Christian theology. The last few pages of the conclusion are meant to focus the whole argument upon what really matters - our belief about God and Christ. They should, perhaps, be read first, as well as last, if the book is to be fairly judged as a whole. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from various Bibles as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's composition excluded sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. In 1895, the Smithsonian Institution under the leadership of librarian Cyrus Adler purchased the original Jefferson Bible from Jefferson's great-granddaughter Carolina Randolph for $400. A conservation effort commencing in 2009, in partnership with the museum's Political History department, allowed for a public unveiling in an exhibit open from November 11, 2011, through May 28, 2012, at the National Museum of American History.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament "Miracles," and Modern "Miracles" The Comparative Amount of Evidence for Each, the Nature of Both, Testimony of a Hundred Witnesses; An Essay, Read Between the Middle and Senior Classes in Cambridge Divinity School IT has been customary among all people to divide the facts of history into two distinct classes; namely, Natural or Profane, and Miraculous or Sacred. In the former class they have included all those events which they are able to explain '1 by known principles, or which have become so common as to excite no surprise. In the latter they have included all those facts which are remark ably wonderful, from the fact of their unfrequent Occurrence, or of their not being accounted for by principles already known. N ow, to show that this distinction is purely subjective, and has no ground in the facts themselves, it is only necessary to state that no two persons draw the line through the same points; and each individual is constantly changing the line Of division, as his own experience and knowledge Of the powers of nature increase. The line has been drawn through every possible point, and is found to apply nowhere. Hence, at the present day, many have rejected it altogether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Miracles in the Light of the Gospel As is explained in the first chapter, I have taken S. John's view of miracles, that they were teaching signs, and examined the Old Testament miracles from that standpoint. I have tried to show that the corresponding Gospel sign in each case was the distilled essence of the Old Testament sign, that the essence being first clarified and then greatly enlarged, the drop became a crystal sphere. I have not attempted an exhaustive study of the Old Testament miracles. I have chosen representative signs, the choice being usually determined by the New Testament fulfilment. It did not come into my plan to discuss questions of criticism. That is the reason for the almost entire omission of them, and not failure to appreciate their importance and interest. Book excerpt: Christianity Today 2013 Book Award Winner Winner of The Foundation for Pentecostal Scholarship's 2012 Award of Excellence 2011 Book of the Year, Christianbook.com's Academic Blog Most modern prejudice against biblical miracle reports depends on David Hume's argument that uniform human experience precluded miracles. Yet current research shows that human experience is far from uniform. In fact, hundreds of millions of people today claim to have experienced miracles. New Testament scholar Craig Keener argues that it is time to rethink Hume's argument in light of the contemporary evidence available to us. This wide-ranging and meticulously researched two-volume study presents the most thorough current defense of the credibility of the miracle reports in the Gospels and Acts. Drawing on claims from a range of global cultures and taking a multidisciplinary approach to the topic, Keener suggests that many miracle accounts throughout history and from contemporary times are best explained as genuine divine acts, lending credence to the biblical miracle reports.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miracle and Science: Bible Miracles Examined by the Methods, Rules and Tests of the Science of Jurisprudence, as Administered to-Day in Courts of Justice The Introductory Chapter presents generally the plan of this work. The following indicates the occasion and purpose of its production. Observers in late years have known that multitudes, classified in Christian categories, have suffered loss of faith in the Bible. To them the Bible has ceased to be the Word of God - ceased to be the record in hu man language of revelations of God to man of His love, law, and economy of grace. Its counsels are no longer to them regulative authority in matters of religion and spiritual life. On the contrary, the Bible has become to them mere litera ture, the product solely of human thought, with no element whatever of divineness in its production. Embraced in this class are many in the Christian ministry, in educational work, and'in the laity of the churches.
