Book Synopsis My Encounter With Ordinary Women Who Led Extraordinary Lives by : Bernard W. Saunders
Download or read book My Encounter With Ordinary Women Who Led Extraordinary Lives written by Bernard W. Saunders and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-04-11 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have known-been blessed to have known many wondrous women in my life-women of color- ordinary women by most standards-born to humble circumstances-who achieved extraordinary things given the obstacles of race, gender, class, and male chauvinism they faced as women of color in an often hostile society. Those written of here are generally of the same age group, and although of different backgrounds, the similarities in their heritage binds them together. Their longevity was in itself, a testimony to their will. I would also argue that their struggles to make ends meet, and the contributions of the men (for good or bad) in their lives, are analogous to most people I have known in my lifetime. History supports, that these women, are also representative of people of color since they first made contact with persons of European descent. As individuals and as a people still under duress, from within and without, we need to take to heart the gift these women have given us by their willingness to open up, to share their lives with us so that we may learn from them, as they have learned from others who came before them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I will continue to blow the trumpet for democracy in the state of Antigua and Barbuda. At the end of my life, I would only want to be remembered as that drop of water that bore a hole in the stone, not as a great policeman nor a great community activist nor a great politician.I continue to drip on the big stone of corruption in Antigua and Barbuda, nepotism, bigotry, and prejudice, and, the most dangerous stone, silence.I deny myself to put Antigua first. I ask what I can do for my country, not what my country can do for me.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early days of the antislavery movement, when political action by women was frowned upon, British and American women were tireless and uncompromising campaigners. Without their efforts, emancipation would have taken much longer. And the commitment of today's women, who fight against human trafficking and child slavery, descends directly from that of the early female activists. Speak a Word for Freedom: Women against Slavery tells the story of fourteen of these women. Meet Alice Seeley Harris, the British missionary whose graphic photographs of mutilated Congolese rubber slaves in 1904 galvanized a nation; Hadijatou Mani, the woman from Niger who successfully sued her own government in 2008 for failing to protect her from slavery, as well as Elizabeth Freeman, Elizabeth Heyrick, Ellen Craft, Harriet Tubman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frances Anne Kemble, Kathleen Simon, Fredericka Martin, Timea Nagy, Micheline Slattery, Sheila Roseau and Nina Smith. Book Synopsis No Sacred Place by : ivan hugh walters
Download or read book No Sacred Place written by ivan hugh walters and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Sacred Place offers a critical study of social injustice done at the behest of law and religion in the context of cultural politics in Christianized societies. Author Ivan Walters theorizes the causes of social injustice and oppression of marginalized peoples as found in the law and Christian theology in both modern and post-modern cultural politics. He advances a theory of redemption through a transgressive discourse that challenges most of the traditional assumptions of Eurocentric Christianity and jurisprudence. Walters sees law and religion as two powerful, politico-cultural institutions that must be kept in check in order to protect the rights of those who are marginalized by the society. History reveals a litany of horrors that have been perpetrated on marginalized peoples by both religious bigotry and the law. Through theological and jurisprudential theoretical inquiries, Walters advocates a thesis of at-one-ment through the historical Christus instead of the Christianitys bastardized version of the Christus. His thesis then is grounded in a theory of challenge and resistance to oppression and the advocacy of the possibilities for redemption from oppression. No Sacred Place challenges the church in particular and society in general to create a new social order and right the wrongs of the current system.
Download or read book Getting About written by Bill Meehan and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well known as a political commentator and the author of sixteen novels, William F. Buckley Jr. was also a superb chronicler of travel. Getting About gathers more than one hundred of his articles about journeys by boat, train, or plane, representing a lifetime of adventure around the world—from Annapolis to Zurich, from the Azores to the Virgin Islands. An elegant jet-setter with a flair for literary journalism, Buckley had few rivals in the art of travel writing. He took first place in the Magazine Article on Foreign Travel category in the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition for eight pieces written while “Concording around the world” in 1989. A master storyteller, he adeptly wove devices of fiction together with reportage to craft entertaining pieces full of exuberance and authority. Being a Bach afficionado, he composed his sentences for a well-tuned ear. Buckley’s talent for arranging a mise-en-scène stands out in accounts of riding the Orient Express, skiing at Alta, or vacationing at Barbuda. Though himself a central character in the story, he never dominates it. He wrote candidly about travel misadventures, as when his sixty-foot schooner broke down in the Bahamas and was towed to Miami by a Coast Guard cutter, or when a malfunctioning compass landed his boat on a rocky shoal off Rhode Island and the Coast Guard said, “Sorry, we can’t help you.” He also took a gimlet eye to the travel industry and a discriminating palate to airline food, suggesting that airports sell “a really good box lunch” with celery rémoulade, fresh figs, and a nice Bordeaux. Getting About is pure enjoyment, but it also broadens the significance of Buckley’s œuvre. Along with Bill Meehan’s illuminating introduction, this delightful collection helps preserve Buckley’s legacy as his centenary, in 2025, approaches.
