Book excerpt: It is 1940 and a war is raging in Europe. But in a German-American neighborhood in Port Huron, Michigan, there is a different battle taking place. As the movie Frankenstein debuts in the theatre, a ten-year-old boy and his twin, Jerry, finally convince their mother to let them see it. Still in that blissful stage of youthful innocence, the twins head to the theatre, filled with excitement, the hope of being frightened out of their wits, and an anxiety that borders on mania. Yet surviving the terror of Frankenstein in a dark theatre is not the only obstacle they must overcome during that summer as they are initiated in the art of bag swinging, baseball throwing, and tunnel building. When a chance meeting with an elderly woman brings the boy a different challenge that includes a desperate search to discover whether ghosts really do exist, their special relationship forces him to reexamine the meaning of a true friend. Haunted Youth shares the delightful tale of a ten-year-old boys coming-of-age journey through 1940s America as he tackles obstacles, finds an unlikely friend, and encounters a shadowy mystery.

Download or read book Haunted Dreams written by Jenny Kaminer and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haunted Dreams is the first comprehensive study in English devoted to cultural representations of adolescence in Russia since the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. Jenny Kaminer situates these cultural representations within the broader context of European and Anglo-American scholarship on adolescence and youth, and she explores how Russian writers, dramatists, and filmmakers have repeatedly turned to the adolescent protagonist in exploring the myriad fissures running through post-Soviet society. Through close analysis of prose, drama, television, and film, this book maps how the adolescent hero has become a locus for multiple anxieties throughout the tumultuous years since the end of the Soviet experiment. Kaminer also directly addresses some of the pivotal questions facing scholars of post-Soviet Russia: Have Soviet cultural models been transcended? Or do they continue to dominate? The figure of the adolescent, an especially potent and enduring source of cultural mythology throughout the Soviet years, provides provocative material for exploring these questions. In Haunted Dreams, Kaminer employs a historical approach to reveal how fantasies of adolescence have mutated and remained constant across the Soviet/post-Soviet divide, focusing on violence, temporality, and gender and the body. Some of the works discussed present the possibility of salvaging the model of the heroic adolescent for a new society. Others, by contrast, relegate this figure to the dustbin of history by evoking disgust or horror, or by unmasking the tragic consequences that ensue from the combination of adolescence, violence, and fantasy.

Jacob and his father are the only people who fish Lake Spetzia, which was formed when the river was dammed and their town was flooded. The villagers say the lake is haunted, but Jacob and his father don’t want to leave, because Jacob’s mother is buried in the cemetery below the water. As Jacob grows up, a village girl named Ellen falls in love with him, and he with her. But before they are married, Jacob disappears—lured underwater by the ghosts who inhabit the sunken village. Years go by, with Jacob held captive by the watery spirits and Ellen never giving up hope that she will find him, until a fateful night when Jacob sees the light of Ellen’s boat floating above. Can he break free and reach the surface? Masterful illustrations alive with achingly expressive characters and eerie underwater light bring readers into acclaimed creator P.J. Book Synopsis The Jane Addams Reader by : Jean Bethke Elshtain
Download or read book The Jane Addams Reader written by Jean Bethke Elshtain and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-01-07 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Addams was a prolific and elegant writer. Her twelve books consist largely of published essays, but to appreciate her life work one must also read her previously uncollected speeches and editorials. This artfully compiled collection begins with Addams's youthful Junior Class Oration on women as "Breadgivers," features thoughtful examinations of topics as diverse as "Tolstoy and Gandhi" and "The Public School and the Immigrant Child," and even includes popular essays on "The Subtle Problems of Charity," from The Atlantic Monthly, and "Need a Woman Over Fifty Feel Old?" from Ladies' Home Journal. Along with the writings themselves, Elshtain's insightful commentary offers powerful evidence of Addams's remarkable ability to frame social problems in an ethical context, her unwillingness to succumb to ideological dogma, her political courage, and her lifelong devotion to civic and moral life.
