Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poltergeists—mischievous spirits, ghosts of the dead, or other strange energies—are said to be responsible for a good deal of unexplainable phenomena. However, often the only clues they leave to their existence are floating objects, broken or missing household items, strange noises, and other minor disturbances, always rendering the investigations of such claims inconclusive. Leaving room for both believers and skeptics, the author of this volume examines a smattering of reported poltergeist activity—from spooky to thrilling to playful—from around the world to better understand the nature of poltergeists and the likelihood of these seemingly paranormal occurrences.
Book Synopsis Haunted Halifax and District by : Kai Roberts
Download or read book Haunted Halifax and District written by Kai Roberts and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled amidst the windswept moorlands of the South Pennines, Halifax has always had a wild reputation: 'From Hell, Hull and Halifax, good Lord deliver us' ran the 'Beggars' Litany'. But was it just a grisly fate at the hands of the Halifax Gibbet, England's last guillotine, that they feared? From historical boggarts to modern poltergeists, the region teems with intruders from beyond the veil: they stalk the gritstone crags and the austere chapels, the tumbledown mills and the ancient taverns. Haunted Halifax & District explores the manifestations and territory of these unquiet spirits, all in the light of the area's colourful history and wider folkloric context. Including such highlights as the spectre of Emily Brontë and a headless coachman with two two headless horses, it will intrigue visitors and residents alike.

Book Synopsis The Poltergeist Phenomenon by : Michael Clarkson
Download or read book The Poltergeist Phenomenon written by Michael Clarkson and published by Red Wheel/Weiser. This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poltergeist is defined as a disturbance or energy with bizarre physical effects of paranormal origin that suggest mischievous or destructive intent, such as breaking or moving objects and loud knocks or noises. The Poltergeist Phenomenon is an exciting, original look at an old subject by an award-winning investigative reporter. The author has reviewed 75 cases and interviewed hundreds of witnesses, paranormal experts, law enforcement officers, psychologists and skeptics to come up with eye-opening results: The typical poltergeist case involves a young person from a repressed home who is going through puberty. He or she may have epilepsy, which produces recurrent spontaneous psychokinesis, a state in which gravity is temporarily suspended. A respected former Princeton University scientist believes he has proven in laboratory experiments that psychokinesis exists and that poltergeist cases are probably true. This rare energy may be part of a person’s fight-or-flight system, which is hardwired into everyone and can erupt in certain conditions.
Book Synopsis Social Haunting, Education, and the Working Class by : Kat Simpson
Download or read book Social Haunting, Education, and the Working Class written by Kat Simpson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a critical Marxist ethnography, conducted at a state primary school in a former coalmining community in the north of England, this book provides insight into teachers’ perceptions of the effects of deindustrialisation on education for the working class. The book draws on the notion of social haunting to help understand the complex ways in which historical relations and performances, reflective of the community’s industrial past, continue to shape experiences and processes of schooling. The arguments presented enable us to engage with the ‘goodness’ of the past as well as the pain and suffering associated with deindustrialisation. This, it is argued, enables teachers and pupils to engage with rhythms, relations, and performances that recognise the heritage and complexities of working-class culture. Reckoning and harnessing with the fullness of ghosts is essential if schooling is to be refashioned in more encouraging and relational ways, with and for the working class. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in the sociology of education, and social class and education in particular. Those interested in schooling, ethnography, and qualitative social research will also benefit from the book
Book Synopsis The Ashgate Research Companion to Paranormal Cultures by : Olu Jenzen
Download or read book The Ashgate Research Companion to Paranormal Cultures written by Olu Jenzen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the much vaunted ’end of religion’ and the growth of secularism, people are engaging like never before in their own ’spiritualities of life’. Across the West, paranormal belief is on the rise. The Ashgate Research Companion to Paranormal Cultures brings together the work of international scholars across the social sciences and humanities to question how and why people are seeking meaning in the realm of the paranormal, a heretofore subjugated knowledge. With contributions from the UK and other European countries, the USA, Australia and Canada, this ground-breaking book attends to the paranormal as a position from which to critique dominant forms of knowledge production and spirituality. A rich exploration of everyday life practices, textual engagements and discourses relating to the paranormal, as well as the mediation, technology and art of paranormal activity, this book explores themes such as subcultures and mainstreaming, as well as epistemological, methodological, and phenomenological questions, and the role of the paranormal in social change. The Ashgate Research Companion to Paranormal Cultures constitutes an essential resource for those interested in the academic study of cultural engagements with paranormality; it will appeal to scholars of cultural and media studies, popular culture, sociology, cultural geography, literature, film and music.

Book Synopsis The Spaces and Places of Horror by : Francesco Pascuzzi
Download or read book The Spaces and Places of Horror written by Francesco Pascuzzi and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2020-01-16 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the complex horizon of landscapes in horror film culture to better understand the use that the genre makes of settings, locations, spaces, and places, be they physical, imagined, or altogether imaginary. In The Philosophy of Horror, Noël Carroll discusses the “geography” of horror as often situating the filmic genre in liminal spaces as a means to displace the narrative away from commonly accepted social structures: this use of space is meant to trigger the audience’s innate fear of the unknown. This notion recalls Freud’s theorization of the uncanny, as it is centered on recognizable locations outside of the Lacanian symbolic order. In some instances, a location may act as one of the describing characteristics of evil itself: In A Nightmare on Elm Street teenagers fall asleep only to be dragged from their bedrooms into Freddy Krueger’s labyrinthine lair, an inescapable boiler room that enhances Freddie’s powers and makes him invincible. In other scenarios, the action may take place in a distant, little-known country to isolate characters (Roth’s Hostel films), or as a way to mythicize the very origin of evil (Bava’s Black Sunday). Finally, anxieties related to the encroaching presence of technology in our lives may give rise to postmodern narratives of loneliness and disconnect at the crossing between virtual and real places: in Kurosawa’s Pulse, the internet acts as a gateway between the living and spirit worlds, creating an oneiric realm where the living vanish and ghosts move to replace them. This suggestive topic begs to be further investigated; this volume represents a crucial addition to the scholarship on horror film culture by adopting a transnational, comparative approach to the analysis of formal and narrative concerns specific to the genre by considering some of the most popular titles in horror film culture alongside lesser-known works for which this anthology represents the first piece of relevant scholarship.
