Book excerpt: In this charming fiction debut, a young woman moves to Manhattan in search of romance and excitement—only to find that her apartment is haunted by the ghost of a cantankerous Beat Generation writer in need of a rather huge favor. For Eve Weldon, moving to Greenwich Village is a dream come true. She’s following in the bohemian footsteps of her mother, who lived there during the early sixties among a lively community of Beat artists and writers. But when Eve arrives, the only scribe she meets is a grumpy ghost named Donald, and the only writing she manages to do is for chirpy segments on a morning news program, Smell the Coffee. The hypercompetitive network environment is a far cry from the genial camaraderie of her mother’s literary scene, and Eve begins to wonder if the world she sought has faded from existence. But as she struggles to balance her new job, demands from Donald to help him complete his life’s work, a budding friendship with a legendary fashion designer, and a search for clues to her mother’s past, Eve begins to realize that community comes in many forms—and that the true magic of the Village is very much alive, though it may reveal itself in surprising ways.

Book excerpt: A fascinating journey into the dark heart of the American gothic that analyzes its connections to race and racism in 21st-century America Haunted houses, bitter revenants and muffled heartbeats under floorboards—the American gothic is a macabre tale based on a true story. Part memoir and part cultural critique, Darkly explores American culture’s inevitable gothicity in the traces left from chattel slavery. The persistence of white supremacy and the ubiquity of Black death feeds a national culture of terror and a perpetual undercurrent of mourning. Book excerpt: Challenges through changes in the environment or sheer luck can bring about new forms of life. This first story is built about such organisms which either lived on this earth or came from outer space. Many of you may have had difficulty in looking after certain pets. These demands can be great, but not as much as keeping a dinosaur with the biggest claws in the world as in the second story. Sometimes we get termites in the UK but this is very unlikely in your case. There may be more to this than meets the eye, especially when a genetic mistake forms a mutant the human termite in story three. Pigeons have been labeled pests, vermin and eradicated in cities. In story four it is time for retribution which starts in central London causing chaos and disaster. The 'Glass Anemone'Aiptasia means beautiful, but for all its beauty it is an aggressive survivor and pest that can take over an aquarium. In this fifth story these glass anemones move into fresh water and venture onto land with serious consequences and loss of human life. Creatures from the past, if they existed today, could cause chaos. This sixth story is such a case where man's endeavour to search for minerals in new environments releases creatures from the past. The seventh story is based on an experiment where urchin genes are transferred to humans. This has devastating consequences for one child who is compelled to prey on people who have dined and wined. A huge blast of radiation from the sun had sterilized everything on earth. Humans knew how to create new beings from dividing egg cells but they were clones. In this eighth story a man returns to a small hut he used to play in as a child. Is he safe inside the hut? Will he leave the same person as before or has he lost or gained something unimaginable? You've probably seen films on pest control where hundreds of mice are found living in a barn. Well this ninth story is about mice, more than one could ever imagine or count that take over a village and cause chaos. During Napoleonic times there were many garrisons placed around the English Channel to prevent invasion by the French.During this time a situation occurred which is commemorated today by naming an alley close to the gun emplacement, 'Screaming Alley.' the title of the tenth story. The eleventh story is about a small boy who sees a horse's face outlined in the trunk of a rotten tree and witnesses a transformation which echoes from the past. This twelfth story is based around Dead Man's island. This is a living graveyard which was used for victims of plague ships and English and French prisoners of war on hulks. Many bones have been exposed on the shore. What happened to the souls of all these people? Are they trapped in this lost human refuse tip, unknown and inaccessible to relatives and friends? Richard, a shepherd and smuggler who knew this island and must return one day to perform an unknown task. Every day a man brought his donkeys down a small lane to the beach. This lane became known as Donkey Lane until finally, as the years went by it was given the name Dead Donkey Lane for reasons that will be found in this next fictional thirteenth story. Many people especially if travelling to other countries experience events such as brief encounters with insects. Others may be ridiculed by their surnames or even being polite to other people which is what this next fourteenth story shows. Plaster of Paris bandages have helped bones heal for many centuries. This final fifteenth story is of a master plasterer whose daily job in 'The Plaster Room' in the local hospital extends into a new obsession which has serious consequences for those involved. This volume presents a wide spectrum of different horror stories and experiences many of which stem from local tales. Can such horrific things happen? Who knows often events occur beyond our imagination. Enjoy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary novel with a New York setting and a dash of speculative fiction, for fans of Colum McCann, Colm Toibin, and Dana Spiotta. Ghosts of New York is a novel in which the laws of time and space have been subtly suspended. It interweaves four strands: a photographer newly returned to the neighborhood where she grew up, after years spent living overseas; a foundling raised on 14th Street; a graduate student, his romantic partner, and his best friend entangled in a set of relationships with far-reaching personal and political repercussions; and a shopkeeper suffering from first love late in life. Mixing prophecy, history, and a hint of speculative fiction, its stories are bound together even as they are propelled into stranger territory. And undergirding it all is a song, which appears, disappears, and then resurfaces. Ghosts of New York explores complex lives through indelible renderings of settings-a bar, a night market, a recording studio-that alternate between familiar and unsettling. The work of a celebrated novelist and veteran of the art, film, and music scenes in New York and Austin (described as "a rare talent" by the New York Times and "a powerful literary voice" by Jeffrey Eugenides), this novel will immediately absorb readers intrigued by creative people and the places that sustain and challenge them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most horrific struggle of the American Revolution occurred just 100 yards off New York, where more men died aboard a rotting prison ship than were lost to combat during the entirety of the war. Moored off the coast of Brooklyn until the end of the war, the derelict ship, the HMS Jersey, was a living hell for thousands of Americans either captured by the British or accused of disloyalty. Crammed below deck--a shocking one thousand at a time--without light or fresh air, the prisoners were scarcely fed food and water. Disease ran rampant and human waste fouled the air as prisoners suffered mightily at the hands of brutal British and Hessian guards. Throughout the colonies, the mere mention of the ship sparked fear and loathing of British troops. It also sparked a backlash of outrage as newspapers everywhere described the horrors onboard the ghostly ship. This shocking event, much like the better-known Boston Massacre before it, ended up rallying public support for the war. Revealing for the first time hundreds of accounts culled from old newspapers, diaries, and military reports, award-winning historian Robert P. Watson follows the lives and ordeals of the ship's few survivors to tell the astonishing story of the cursed ship that killed thousands of Americans and yet helped secure victory in the fight for independence.

Book excerpt: "Before the entitled lived here exclusively, the marginalized died in droves." Founded in 1849 to care for indigent immigrants in Greenwich Village, St. Vincent's Hospital was sold in 2010 to create multi-million-dollar homes. In its 161 years of existence, the legendary institution treated survivors of the Titanic, tended to victims of both World Trade Center attacks, and served as Ground Zero of the AIDS Crisis. With honesty, humor, and flights of historical fancy, GHOSTS OF ST. VINCENT'S tells the hospital's story through the eyes of a man who spent a winter on its 7th floor AIDS ward and survived just in time for the drug "cocktail" that saved so many lives. Featuring appearances by indomitable icons (from Edna St. Vincent Millay to Robert Mapplethorpe, Sidney Lumet to Vito Russo, Ed Koch and The Ramones), GHOSTS OF ST. VINCENT'S explores coming out and coming back from the dead, gender fluidity and gentrification, the price of forgiveness, the cost of survival, and the ephemeral nature of New York City.

Book excerpt: In his brilliant second novel, Dermot McEvoy sweeps his readers into the midst of one of the most heated political races in New York City history, where an unlikely player decides to make her presence known. First it hits the papers that the Virgin Mary has appeared to Jackie Swift, an affable G.O.P. congressman with a couple of nasty habits. She then appears in a dream to Wolfe Tone O’Rourke, a liberal political consultant who is still haunted by the ghost of Bobby Kennedy, whose death he feels responsible for.Swift uses the Virgin, soon styled “Our Lady of Greenwich Village,” to put a strong anti-abortion spin on his current run for office, which immediately polarizes Greenwich Village. O’Rourke, beset by his many demons, sees something familiar in the Virgin’s dancing eyes and the line of her smile and decides to run against Swift with the campaign slogan “NO MORE BULLSHIT.” With help from unlikely characters like Cyclops Reilly, a one-eyed newspaper columnist for the Daily News, and Simone “Sam” McGuire, O’Rourke’s pretty, no-nonsense assistant, Tone is sent on a transcontinental journey that forces him to confront his own ghosts and dig deep into his family history, all to answer one burning question: What does Our Lady of Greenwich Village really want him to do? Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. Book excerpt: One of the most popular writers working in Japan today, Mariko Koike is a recognized master of detective fiction and horror writing. Known in particular for her hybrid works that blend these styles with elements of romance, The Graveyard Apartment is arguably Koike’s masterpiece. Originally published in Japan in 1986, Koike’s novel is the suspenseful tale of a young family that believes it has found the perfect home to grow into, only to realize that the apartment’s idyllic setting harbors the specter of evil and that longer they stay, the more trapped they become. This tale of a young married couple who harbor a dark secret is packed with dread and terror, as they and their daughter move into a brand new apartment building built next to a graveyard. As strange and terrifying occurrences begin to pile up, people in the building start to move out one by one, until the young family is left alone with someone... or something... lurking in the basement. The psychological horror builds moment after moment, scene after scene, culminating with a conclusion that will make you think twice before ever going into a basement again.
