The most important discovery made by Professor Ehud Netzer at Herodium is the mausoleum of King Herod the Great. This volume offers a summary of the palaces erected by the Hasmoneans, followed by those of the greatest builder of ancient Israel - King Herod the Great (37-4 BC E). The extensive excavations conducted by Professor Netzer at Jericho uncovered a winter palace (previously unknown) equipped with many swimming pools, bathing installations, ritual baths, and ornamental gardens. Additional remains from the Hasmonean period (second-first centuries BCE ), including the desert fortresses and an anchorage for boats on the Dead Sea, are also described in detail. Many of Herod' s palaces were minutely described by Josephus Flavius: Masada, Herodium, and the central palace in Jerusalem. To these the author adds detailed accounts of two Herodian palaces not described by Josephus - the winter palace at Jericho and the promontory palace at Caesarea. The volume also presents the remains of the Herodian palaces at well - known desert fortresses: Cypros, Alexandrium, and Machaerus.

Chapter 1 explores why the Maccabees regarded Hanukkah as a festival of renewal, specifically of those traditions related to the Temple cult. Chapter 2 examines the manner in which the Hasmoneans used the protection and maintenance of the Jewish Temple to legitimize their rule—and how they worked to place the Temple at the center of the Jewish religion. Chapters 3–5 deal with different perspectives in the Hellenistic world on the role of government and royal ideologies. Specifically, chapter 3 explores both the Hellenistic and Jewish contexts for Hasmonean government and kingship. Regev shows how the Hasmonean dynasty built up its religious (in contrast to political) authority, suggesting that the Hasmonean state was not a conventionally Hellenistic one, but rather a 'national' monarchy, closer to Macedonian in type. Chapter 4 attempts to decipher the meaning of the symbols and epigraphs on Hasmonean coins, and examines how both Hellenistic symbols and Jewish concepts were employed to reinforce the dynasty's authority and introduce Jewish 'national' ideas into the populace. Chapter 5 then undertakes a comparative social-archaeological analysis of the Hasmonean palaces in Jericho in an effort to gain insight into their royal ideology. The author compares the Hasmonean palaces to other Hellenistic palaces – especially the Herodian palaces. Finally, the concluding chapter integrates the previous findings into a new understanding of and appreciation for the Hasmoneans' creation of an innovative Jewish corporal identity, one whose echoes we can still hear today.

Scholarly consensus has held that an Essene library was hidden ahead of the Roman advance in 68 CE, when Qumran was partly destroyed. With much doubt now expressed about aspects of this view, The Essenes, the Scrolls and the Dead Sea systematically reviews the surviving historical sources, and supports an understanding of the Essenes as an influential legal society, at the centre of Judaean religious life, held in much esteem by many and protected by the Herodian dynasty, thus appearing as "Herodians" in the Gospels. The historical context of the Dead Sea area itself, and its extraordinary natural resources, as well as the archaeology of Qumran, confirm the Essenes' patronage by Herod, and indicate that they harnessed the medicinal material the Dead Sea zone provides to this day.
