Book Synopsis Keeping Up Appearances by : Rose Macaulay

Book excerpt: Daisy and Daphne, half-sisters, are staying with a family of English 'intelligentsia' on holiday in the Mediterranean. Daisy - shy, insecure and working-class - conceals her 'shameful' work as an author of 'women's fiction' and a journalist with a popular newspaper. Daphne - attractive, confident and sophisticated - is approved of by all, and she and Raymond, the elder son, fall in love (as does Daisy with him). Back in London, the sisters resume normal life, Daisy visiting her 'common' but loving family and Daphne seeing Raymond, who proposes marriage, and is accepted - on condition the engagement is kept secret, to Raymond's consternation. As tension mounts, the author reveals that Daphne and Daisy are actually different facets of one person, and that Raymond, in accepting the sophisticated Daphne, will have to accept Daisy's lesser qualities as well. Daisy/Daphne feels she cannot afford to divulge her origins or let him and his cultured family meet her brash, 'common' mother, and agonises over this. But her determined mother decides to see her daughter's betrothed for herself, and the truth is out. Raymond rather likes mother, but his beloved's prevarications and duplicity have somewhat cooled his passion; will the engagement triumph, or, if not, who will end it?

Book Synopsis Black Cat Weekly #38 by : Laird Long
Download or read book Black Cat Weekly #38 written by Laird Long and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2022 with total page 844 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Black Cat Weekly #38. This issue, we have some real gems—starting with our featured story, Hope Mirrlees’s Lud-in-the-Mist. It’s a true classic of fantasy, acclaimed by critics for generations. Plus we have a Hashknife Hartley historical adventure novel (okay, you can call it a Western!) from W.C. Tuttle. Our acquiring editors have been busy, too. Michael Bracken snagged an original private eye tale from Laird Long, Barb Goffman found a terrific John M. Floyd story, and Cynthia Ward picked up a great science fiction story by Nisi Shawl and Michael Ehart. And I’ve been busy picking out stories, too—just so you don’t think I’m resting on the magazine’s laurels. This issue has a classic-style detective yarn from new author Saul Golubcow (the first of of three stories we’ll be running in this series), plus classic science fiction from Lester del Rey, John W. Campbell Jr., and Otis Adelbert Kline. Here’s the lineup: Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure: “Toy Ploy” by Laird Long [Michael Bracken Presents short story] “A Robber’s Craft” by Hal Charles [solve-it-yourself mystery] “The Cost of Living”by Saul Golubcow [novelet] “The Barlow Boys” by John M. Floyd [Barb Goffman Presents short story] The Buckaroo of Blue Wells, by W. C. Tuttle [novel] Science Fiction & Fantasy: “In Blood and Song” by Nisi Shawl and Michael Ehart [Cynthia Ward Presents short story] “Shadows of Empire” by Lester del Rey [short story] “The Immortality Seekers” by John W. Campbell, Jr. [novelet] “Meteor Men of Mars” by Harry Cord and Otis Adelbert Kline [short story] Lud-in-the-Mist, by Hope Mirrlees [novel]
Book Synopsis The Horsemen of the Americas and the Literature They Inspired by : Edward Larocque Tinker
Download or read book The Horsemen of the Americas and the Literature They Inspired written by Edward Larocque Tinker and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wherever cattle have been raised on a large scale horsemen have been there to handle them; and wherever these horsemen have existed they have left an indelible mark upon the history of the land. Frequently they have been ignorant, violent, and brutal. Always they have been vigorous and individualistic. They have taken their herds into frontier areas, opened new country, fought and driven off earlier inhabitants, participated in revolutions, battled among themselves, and generally lived lives which, colorful and somewhat frightening to their contemporaries, have become robust legends to those who followed them. Edward Larocque Tinker portrays the life of these people in the two Americas, the conditions which created them, and those that ultimately destroyed or transformed them. "Ever since I was a small boy, when my parents returned from Mexico bringing me a charro outfit complete with saddle and bridle, Latin America has beckoned with the finger of romance," Mr. Tinker recalls. "As soon as I was old enough, I made many trips to Mexico and, in the days of Porfirio Díaz, learned to know it from the border to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. During the Revolution I was with General Álvaro Obregón when he was a Teniente Coronel in his Sonora Campaign, and, although I was only a lawyer on a holiday, took care of his wounded in the battel of San Joaquín. Later, in Pancho Villa's train, I was present at Celaya when he was defeated by Obregón. "Always an ardent horseman, I worked many a roundup with the vaqueros of Sonora and Chihuahua, and with the cowboys of our Southwest. . . . "I saw the similarity between the American cowboy, the Argentine Gaucho, and the Vaquero of Mexico. They all received their gear and technique of cattle handling from Spain, and developed the same independence, courage, and hardihood. I thought if these qualities were better known they might serve as a bridge to closer understanding throughout the Americas." From his study of the lives of these horsemen, Tinker proceeds to an examination of the literature that evolved among and then about them. The first and largest part of the book deals with the gaucho of Argentina and Uruguay. The second and third sections examine the charro of Mexico and the cowboy of the United States.
