Book excerpt: Canadian Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy presents new critical analysis about related developments in the field such as significantly changed concepts of peer review, merit review, the emergence of big data in the digital age, and the rise of an economy and society dominated by the internet and information. The authors scrutinize the different ways in which federal and provincial policies have impacted both levels of government, including how such policies impact on Canada’s natural resources. They also study key government departments and agencies involved with science, technology, and innovation to show how these organizations function increasingly in networks and partnerships, as Canada seeks to keep up and lead in a highly competitive global system. The book also looks at numerous realms of technology across Canada in universities, business, and government and various efforts to analyze biotechnology, genomics, and the Internet, as well as earlier technologies such as nuclear reactors, and satellite technology. The authors assess whether a science-and-technology-centred innovation economy and society has been established in Canada – one that achieves a balance between commercial and social objectives, including the delivery of public goods and supporting values related to redistribution, fairness, and community and citizen empowerment. Probing the nature of science advice across prime ministerial eras, including recent concerns over the Harper government’s claimed muzzling of scientists in an age of attack politics, Canadian Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy provides essential information for academics and practitioners in business and government in this crucial and complex field.

Book excerpt: Recognition of the contribution of technological change to economic growth has grown steadily in the latter half of the 20th century. That has spawned a large body of literature concerned with identifying the factors associated with the generation and spread of technological change. Little attention, however, has been given in the innovation literature to the "people side" of the equation, that is, to how organizations themselves have to adapt to technological change. These concerns have had a higher profile in other fields of research, such as organizational development and human resource management. This paper examines the links between computer-based technological and organizational change. The link is examined empirically using a longitudinal database on the innovation behaviour of Canadian businesses over two periods -- 1980-85 and 1986-91. The evidence shows that as the use of computer-based technologies deepens within firms, the level of organizational innovation increases. However, while technological change may stimulate organizational innovation, much of that innovation does not appear to be successful in the long-term

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the headlines, things are happening—remorselessly and inexorably. They will have more impact on the world than the passing news in today’s headlines. The new global environment will be very different. Are you prepared? How will you, your family, and your business cope? Today’s world is very noisy. How do you filter out what is important? How do you make sense of the future? What do you need to think about? This book explores the world as it could be in 2032—and the implications for you and your organisation. It investigates the twelve key megatrends that are changing in the world. For each one, the book discusses the impact, why it is important, how we got here, what could accelerate or slow this trend, and what individuals and organisations can do to survive and thrive in the new world of 2032. The contributors here are professionals in thinking about the future. They have worked with many high-profile organisations, have held senior line roles in major corporations and understand the needs of both decision makers and ordinary people.
