Book Synopsis The Specular Moment by : David E. Wellbery
Download or read book The Specular Moment written by David E. Wellbery and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No study of Goethe's early lyric poetry has been published in English in the last fifty years. But the reading of this poetry the author presents is not intended merely to introduce an English readership to a major body of work; rather, the book delineates for the first time in any language an account of the symbolic network or organizing myth that underlies Goethe's individual poems. This marks a decisive break with the previous research on Goethe, which has tended to view his poetry as the expression of occasional experiences. The author shows, on the contrary, that Goethe's lyric work circles around a core set of problems and figures, that it evinces a systematic coherence unperceived until now.
Book Synopsis Humor, Satire, and Identity by : Jill Twark
Download or read book Humor, Satire, and Identity written by Jill Twark and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in English to survey the Eastern German literary trend of employing humor and satire to come to terms with experiences in the German Democratic Republic and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. As sophisticated attempts to make sense of socialism’s failure and a difficult unification process, these contemporary texts help define Germany today from a specific, Eastern German perspective. Grounded in politics and history, ten humorous and satirical novels are analyzed for their literary aesthetics and language, cultural critiques, and socio-political insights. The texts include popular novels such as Thomas Brussig’s Helden wie wir, Ingo Schulze’s Simple Storys, and Jens Sparschuh’s Der Zimmerspringbrunnen, as well as lesser-known but equally relevant works like Schlehweins Giraffe by Bernd Schirmer and Katerfrühstück by Erich Loest. A broad spectrum of humor and satire theories is applied to probe texts from various angles and suggest multi-layered answers to the question of how these literary modes function in postwall Germany to construct a specifically Eastern German identity. Interviews the author conducted with five of the satirists are appended as primary sources and contribute to the interpretation of the texts.
Download or read book Volker Braun in Perspective written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the occasion of Volker Braun's 65th and GDR/German Monitor's 25th birthday an attempt is made to re-evaluate Braun's contribution to 20th and 21st century German literature. The seventeen essays of the collection, written by a truly international set of scholars, demonstrate the unique quality and breadth of Braun's writing, spanning all literary genres. But not only that, they also reveal the diversity of interpretative perspectives which Braun's oeuvre productively stimulates. They showcase an author who refuses to indulge complacently in past achievements and an opus that defies all attempts at labelling. Braun's texts, so the verdict of the contributors, are driven by an insatiable thirst for the whole story, the depth beneath the superficial, the complex truth of our human predicament; for the precise expression which is not caught up in the limitations of the dominant ideology, whatever it might be.

Book Synopsis Aesthetics across Cultures by : Rosy Singh
Download or read book Aesthetics across Cultures written by Rosy Singh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically examines the "mutual illuminations" between literature, religion, architecture, films, performative arts, paintings, woodworks, memes and masks cutting across time and space. Architecture is a good example where the eventual success of a project depends on the harmony between physical sciences and aesthetics, design and planning, knowledge of building material, the local climate and awareness of cultural sensibilities. This volume affirms that aesthetics and arts are deeply linked through existential issues of who I am. The chapters in this volume present diverse discursive structures highlighting the in-between spaces between various art forms and mediums, such as: • Architecture, literature and memory • Kafka in SoHo; Kafka and Bernhard • Kirchner’s woodcuts; pictorial and stage representations of E.T.A. Hoffmann • Hesse’s fairy tales; translations of Pañcatantra • Nietzsche, ritual arts and face masks; martyrdom in La chanson de Roland • Goethe and Hafiz; Indian thought in Martin Buber • Rhythms of the "Third" across cultures • Dadaism and contemporary memes This book examines these sublime linkages in a comparative and interdisciplinary way. Engaging and intersectional, this volume will appeal to students and scholars of arts and aesthetics, literature, philosophy, architecture, sociology, translation studies and readers who are interested in cultural, intertextual, intermedial and comparative studies.
