Download or read book Jew's Harp written by Walter Hess and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Jewish Studies. Walter Hess's remarkable JEW'S HARP is a celebration of family, of tradition, of living through terrible and wonderful times, and even of memory itself. The obvious themes are love and survival. The controlled lyric and narrative voice of the poems is that of a son, and grandson, speaking about his father, mother, wife, children and grandchildren; they speak of the agony of loss and the joy of retrieval; they speak of journeys, from Hitler's Germany, to Ecuador, to safety in America, and a new life. These are poems of an open spirit toward God and His people. These poems create the feel of ritual, a distancing that the depth of his subject and emotion evoke.
Book Synopsis The Commandrine and Other Poems by : Joyelle McSweeney
Download or read book The Commandrine and Other Poems written by Joyelle McSweeney and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brilliance of Joyelle McSweeney's poems is a given; what remains delightfully open to negotiation are its methodologies and its mien. Is she an earnest relator, using wit and gesture to tell the story faster? Or does she take the piss of her subjects, using perfected skills of mimicry and divination to exploit, spot on, their errant humanities? In her second book McSweeney finds her subjects in the long form; "The Commandrine" is a verse-play that in nine scenes tells the story of sailors Zest, Coast, Ivory, and Irish, and their watery run-in with the Devil. "The Cockatoos Morose" stirs Eliotic grandeur with Stevensian absurdity for a cocktail of delirious observation and rigorous leaps of the sort McSweeney is certain to become famous for. "Crusade-dream flips like a standard. The standard / narrows to a point. And points. / Then it dips like a fern."
Book Synopsis Rendition for Harp & Kalashnikov by : A. Frances Johnson
Download or read book Rendition for Harp & Kalashnikov written by A. Frances Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new collection extends themes taken up in The Wind-up Birdman of Moorabool Street (2012). Environmental degradation and theme park notions of the natural endure. Accordingly, these poems reflect with tenderness, anger and irony on the ways humans chronicle, construct and war upon their natural environments. 'Rendition' puns on the idea of a song lyric, translation, surrender and also torture. In the anti-pastoral, anti-war poems offered here, groups of human beings and individuals are also shown as either tragically marginalized, lost of held too close. Cautionary ecocritical threnodies splice with personal elegies and historical cultural reflections to suggest a world awash with maladies of different kinds, as if to say that human beings must recalibrate love, death, survival and history as matters of urgency.

Book Synopsis Dear Harp of My Country by : James W. Flannery
Download or read book Dear Harp of My Country written by James W. Flannery and published by J. S. Sanders. This book was released on 1997 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best friend to Lord Byron; famous throughout Europe and America as a poet, composer, singer, wit, and polemicist; Thomas Moore (1779-1852) was the embodiment of Romanticism. It is said he was often moved to tears by his own songs, and so were his audiences. Servants lined up behind closed doors to hear him; women swooned, wrote him notes in verse, and treasured locks of his hair. The first in a long line of Irish poet-performers who combined personal expression with a zeal for political and social reform, Moore formed a vital link between the old Gaelic bardic tradition -- nearly extinct in his day -- and the popular songs in English that fueled the flames of nationalism in early nineteenth century Ireland.Including Moore's lyrics to accompany the songs recorded here, James Flannery's book is part biography, part music history, and part history of a nation. It presents the story of Thomas Moore in the context of the Irish nationalist movement and explains the lasting influence the songs of Moore have had on the lives of countless millions of Irish emigrants, who found in them a symbolic link with their homeland.
Download or read book The Accounts written by Katie Peterson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-09-19 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The death of a mother alters forever a family’s story of itself. Indeed, it taxes the ability of a family to tell that story at all. The Accounts narrates the struggle to speak with any clear understanding in the wake of that loss. The title poem attempts three explanations of the departure of a life from the earth—a physical account, a psychological account, and a spiritual account. It is embedded in a long narrative sequence that tries to state plainly the facts of the last days of the mother’s life, in a room that formerly housed a television, next to a California backyard. The visual focus of that sequence, a robin’s nest, poised above the family home, sings in a kind of lament, giving its own version of ways we can see the transformation of the dying into the dead. In other poems, called “Arguments,” two voices exchange uncertain truths about subjects as high as heaven and as low as crime. Grief is a problem that cannot be solved by thinking, but that doesn’t stop the mind, which relentlessly carries on, trying in vain to settle its accounts. The death of a well-loved person creates a debt that can never be repaid. It reminds the living of our own psychological debts to each other, and to the dead. In this sense, the death of this particular mother and the transformation of this particular family are evocative of a greater struggle against any changing reality, and the loss of all beautiful and passing forms of order.
