Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The land on which Harmony Hall stands was surveyed in 1662 by Humphrey Haggett. In 1769 Enoch Magruder purchased a dwelling plantation which was called Battersea. During the time of his ownership the Georgian-style manor house was built. The Addison brothers rented the house from Magruder in 1792. Legend has it that after living there with their wives for a year they declared the place such a source of happiness that it should be named Harmony Hall. The members of the illustrious Addison family had connections with George Washington. The Reverend Henry Addison was rector of St. John's Church, Broad Creek. A sign at this church declares that "Washington attended services here on numerous occasions." When Eleanor Addison and Jonathon Boucher were married in 1772 the Washingtons had intended to pay their respects to the couple, but as George Washington wrote to Boucher, "We were prevented by harvest, company and one thing or another." The Reverend Walter Dulany Addison was one of four ministers who spoke at Washington's funeral. Silesia was the name of a region in the German Empire, now part of Poland. In the late 1890's families came to America from this region to found a community in Prince George's County, Maryland. Robert Stein and a few of his relatives were the first to arrive and he petitioned to have the community named Silesia. Some of the German immigrants lived in Harmony Hall while others lived on farms nearby. Robert Stein was employed by the U.S. Geological Survey in Washington. He translated technical materials from German, Swedish, Danish, Dutch, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian. In 1897 and 1899-1901 Robert Stein undertook Arctic expeditions. The generosity of current and former residents of Silesia who provided treasured photographs brought a human face to this local history. The Silesia Citizens Foundation provided the funds needed to publish this book. All proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Har

Book excerpt: "In late summer of 1985, archeologists and volunteers with the National Park Service began compliance excavations at Harmony Hall, an eighteenth-century Georgian manor house situated on sixty-three acres of Potomac River frontage in Prince Georges County, Maryland. The purpose of these excavations was to provide clearance for proposed rehabilitation and utility upgrades to the house and grounds prior to construction. As the project progressed, it became clear that this National Register property warranted further detailed investigations as feature after feature was encountered. The most important discovery was the unearthing of evidence indicating a late seventeenth-century occupation of the site. The findings from the archeological excavations at Harmony Hall add to the body of knowledge about life along the seventeenth-century western frontier of Maryland."--Abstract, page i.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1809, Gen. George Washington directed the construction of a military post overlooking the Potomac River to protect the city of Washington from the British. Fort Warburton, as it was originally known, was destroyed in 1814 by its own commanding officer, who ordered the fort's destruction on the approach of the British fleet. A strong community remains, thriving on diversity, economic growth, and its close proximity to the nation's capital. Recently, the citizens of Fort Washington renewed their efforts to preserve history; this dedication is evident in the revitalization of Fort Washington Park under the auspices of the National Park Service. Images for this volume, which date to the birth of photography, were drawn from the National Archives and Records and the Library of Congress, as well as private collections.

Book excerpt: John Maynard Keynes, then a rising young economist, participated in the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 as chief representative of the British Treasury and advisor to Prime Minister David Lloyd George. He resigned after desperately trying and failing to reduce the huge demands for reparations being made on Germany. The Economic Consequences of the Peace is Keynes' brilliant and prophetic analysis of the effects that the peace treaty would have both on Germany and, even more fatefully, the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Breslau arts scene was one of the most vibrant in all of Weimar-era Germany, it has largely disappeared from memory. Studies of the influence of Weimar culture on modernism have focused almost exclusively on Berlin and the Dessau Bauhaus, yet the advances that occurred in Breslau affected nearly every intellectual field, forming the basis for aesthetic modernism internationally and having an enduring impact on visual art and architecture. Breslau boasted a thriving modern arts scene and one of the premier German arts academies of the day until the Nazis began their assault on so-called degenerate art. This book charts the cultural production of Breslau-based artists, architects, art collectors, urban designers, and arts educators who operated in the margins of Weimar-era cultural debates. Rather than accepting the radical position of the German avant-garde or the reactionary position of German conservatives, many Breslauers sought a middle ground. This richly illustrated volume is the first book in English to address this history, constituting an invaluable addition to the literature on the Weimar period. Its readership includes scholars of German history, art, architecture, urban design, planning, collecting, and exhibition history; of the avant-garde, and of the development of arts academies and arts pedagogy.
