Book excerpt: India is a growing economic power and is expected to grow at a sustained annual average rate of 7-8 % in first leg upto the end of current decade and at the rates of nearing 10% by the later period of the year 2010. At this critical phase of its development, the resilience of this democratic nation remains in its commitment towards sustainable development, and economic prosperity without damaging the environmental and natural fabric of the nation, which is necessary for the well being of its diverse masses. However, sizable proportion of population is dependent on natural resources including forests. Under the changing scenario of economic, socio-cultural and developmental scene, ensuring the sustainability of natural resources particularly the availability of limited forest resources becomes a challenge for the sector. Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) becomes the necessity for the country looking to the dependency of rural poor on the forests for their livelihood. SFM incorporates the technical, ecological and economic aspects of the forestry as well as addresses the socio-economic and livelihoods of forest dwelling communities. Criteria and Indicators (C&I) approach being adopted by as many as 159 countries for achieving SFM. The C&I framework helps to define the SFM and continuously monitor the various interventions made to improve the forests. The book is devoted on this important aspect of the forestry sector of India and it is the first attempt of its kind on the theoretical and practical aspects of C&I for SFM. This book has made an attempt to help young persons who are studying SFM and other forestry subjects at college or universities to understand the concept and upgrade their knowledge on the subject. Throughout the book the complex subject has been made simple to understand. Part I gives an overview of the SFM, C&I for SFM in India. Part II describes the Biodiversity conservation and sustainability, Part III devoted to Economic valuation of forest resources, giving note of existing system of forest resource accounting and distortion in it and also on the proposed forest resource accounting suiting to forestry situation in India. Part IV to VI discusses the issues of Forest certification and need, Forest monitoring and evaluation system, and National strategy for SFM.

Book excerpt: There is increasing pressure on the forestry industry to adopt sustainable practices, but a lack of knowledge about how to facilitate this, and how to measure sustainability. This book reviews current thinking about scientifically based indicators, and sustainable management of natural forests and plantations. Information is applicable to boreal, temperate and tropical biomes. The contents have been developed from papers presented at a IUFRO conference held in Australia, in order to develop a state-of the art report on this subject.

Book excerpt: "This review looks at the Nation's legal, institutional, and economic capacity to promote forest conservation and sustainable resource management. It focuses on 20 indicators of Criterion Seven of the so-called Montreal Process and involves an extensive search and synthesis of information from a variety of sources. It identifies ways to fill information gaps and improve the usefulness of several indicators. It concludes that there is substantial information about the application of such capacities, although that application is widely dispersed among agencies and private interests; which in turn has led to differing interpretations of the indicators. Individual chapters identify a need to further develop the conceptual foundation on which many of the indicators are predicated. While many uncertainties in the type and accuracy of information are brought to light, the review clearly indicates that legal, institutional, and economic capacities to promote sustainability are large and widely available in both the public and private sectors."--P. vi.

Book excerpt: Yet another book on the topic of ‘Sustainable Forest Management’ can only be justified by new information that is of direct relevance. The contents of this volume concentrate on the very latest factors and developments, thus, hopefully, contributing both to the book’s attractiveness and to closing gaps in the discipline’s database. This book is written for researchers in the field of forest management, international forestry, and climate change-related issues, legal and policy advisors, as well as for managers of private companies who deal with SFM. The authors of the various sections are scientists in the field of forestry and other environmental sciences. They represent different institutions, mainly universities and research agencies in Germany, but also high-level international institutions in development co-operation, such as the World Bank, FAO, and IIASA. The scope of the book is to refresh the meanings and perceptions of SFM against the background of the rapid changes in our natural and social environment. Climate change and the rapid increase of atmospheric CO concentration is a global process 2 with negative impacts of different kinds, among others on natural ecosystems such as forests. A crucial issue therefore is how forest management can contribute to forest conservation in light of changing climatic conditions. Moreover, policy changes such as the introduction of certification schemes and the new emphasis laid on Non-Wood Forest Products justify the re-evaluation of the role of SFM in delivering ecological goods and services from our forests.

Book excerpt: The issue of scale of data must be addressed if forest managers are to minimize errors when data collected at one organizational level are used to estimate parameters at another. This paper discusses the following issues concerning scale: the issues of scale regarding the collection & aggregation of data at the subnational & national levels; the effect of scale on the interpretation of data; and the implications of the periodicity of nationally collected data on subnational application of criteria & indicators of sustainable forest management. The paper also provides examples from several countries on mechanisms for the development, identification, and implementation of subnational indicators of sustainable forest management that can be linked to national indicators.

Book excerpt: Community managed forest systems embody a considerable portion of the wisdom, knowledge, and practical skills and management necessary for the sustainability of forest resources globally. These systems, however, are under threat in many ways, including from the rapid rate of change of their political, socio-economic, and biophysical contexts. Adapting forest management sufficiently quickly and effectively to meet these changes is both urgent and very challenging. This Guide introduces criteria and indicators of sustainability for community managed forest landscapes (CMF C&I) as a potential learning and communication tool that can help meet that challenge. It draws on CIFOR’s collaborative research on CMF C&I in Brazil, Indonesia, and Cameroon to propose a flexible step-by-step approach to developing and implementing self or collaborative forest monitoring systems, and gives examples of C&I developed by communities in these countries. The approach is targeted to communities and their partners in forest management, such as NGOs, government, or development projects, who are seeking strategies to improve local well-being and forest sustainability through more effective learning, collaboration, and decision-making in local forest management.

Book excerpt: Criteria and indicators constitute an increasingly common policy tool to implement sustainable forest management (SFM) and to define clear priorities and targets. This should improve monitoring, reporting and assessment of key aspects of SFM performance. These guidelines provide specific concepts, definitions, tools and reference materials to guide the development process of national criteria and indicator sets for SFM. These guidelines have been developed to support the project "Accountability Systems for Sustainable Forest Management in the Caucasus and Central Asia" which is implemented through the UNECE and FAO Forestry and Timber Section and funded through the UN Development Account. The guidelines and the methods described within are used and applied for the development of national criteria and indicator sets for sustainable forest management in Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The guidelines might be also relevant for other countries
