Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds are solutions of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations which appear in different contexts of differential geometry. They include holomorphic maps, minimal surfaces, å-models in physics. Recently, they have become powerful tools in the study of global properties of Riemannian and Khlerian manifolds.A standard reference for this subject is a pair of Reports, published in 1978 and 1988 by James Eells and Luc Lemaire. This book presents these two reports in a single volume with a brief supplement reporting on some recent developments in the theory. It is both an introduction to the subject and a unique source of references, providing an organized exposition of results spread throughout more than 800 papers.

Book Synopsis Harmonic Maps and Differential Geometry by : Eric Loubeau
Download or read book Harmonic Maps and Differential Geometry written by Eric Loubeau and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of a conference held in Cagliari, Italy, from September 7-10, 2009, to celebrate John C. Wood's 60th birthday. These papers reflect the many facets of the theory of harmonic maps and its links and connections with other topics in Differential and Riemannian Geometry. Two long reports, one on constant mean curvature surfaces by F. Pedit and the other on the construction of harmonic maps by J. C. Wood, open the proceedings. These are followed by a mix of surveys on Prof. Wood's area of expertise: Lagrangian surfaces, biharmonic maps, locally conformally Kahler manifolds and the DDVV conjecture, as well as several research papers on harmonic maps. Other research papers in the volume are devoted to Willmore surfaces, Goldstein-Pedrich flows, contact pairs, prescribed Ricci curvature, conformal fibrations, the Fadeev-Hopf model, the Compact Support Principle and the curvature of surfaces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad yet comprehensive introduction to the analysis of harmonic maps and their heat flows. The first part of the book contains many important theorems on the regularity of minimizing harmonic maps by Schoen-Uhlenbeck, stationary harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds in higher dimensions by Evans and Bethuel, and weakly harmonic maps from Riemannian surfaces by Helein, as well as on the structure of a singular set of minimizing harmonic maps and stationary harmonic maps by Simon and Lin. The second part of the book contains a systematic coverage of heat flow of harmonic maps that includes Eells-Sampson's theorem on global smooth solutions, Struwe's almost regular solutions in dimension two, Sacks-Uhlenbeck's blow-up analysis in dimension two, Chen-Struwe's existence theorem on partially smooth solutions, and blow-up analysis in higher dimensions by Lin and Wang. The book can be used as a textbook for the topic course of advanced graduate students and for researchers who are interested in geometric partial differential equations and geometric analysis.

Book Synopsis Harmonic Mappings, Twistors And Sigma Models by : Paul Gauduchon
Download or read book Harmonic Mappings, Twistors And Sigma Models written by Paul Gauduchon and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1988-10-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harmonic mappings have played in recent years and will likely to play in the future an important role in Differential Geometry and Theoretical Physics, where they are known as s-models. These Proceedings develop both aspects of the theory, with a special attention to the constructive methods, in particular the so-called twistorial approach. It includes expository articles on the twistorial methods, the various appearence of σ-models in Physics, the powerful analytic theory of regularity of SCHOEN-UHLENBECK.
Book Synopsis Twistor Theory for Riemannian Symmetric Spaces by : Francis E. Burstall
Download or read book Twistor Theory for Riemannian Symmetric Spaces written by Francis E. Burstall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph on twistor theory and its applications to harmonic map theory, a central theme is the interplay between the complex homogeneous geometry of flag manifolds and the real homogeneous geometry of symmetric spaces. In particular, flag manifolds are shown to arise as twistor spaces of Riemannian symmetric spaces. Applications of this theory include a complete classification of stable harmonic 2-spheres in Riemannian symmetric spaces and a Bäcklund transform for harmonic 2-spheres in Lie groups which, in many cases, provides a factorisation theorem for such spheres as well as gap phenomena. The main methods used are those of homogeneous geometry and Lie theory together with some algebraic geometry of Riemann surfaces. The work addresses differential geometers, especially those with interests in minimal surfaces and homogeneous manifolds.

Book Synopsis Grassmannians and Gauss Maps in Piecewise-Linear Topology by : Norman Levitt
Download or read book Grassmannians and Gauss Maps in Piecewise-Linear Topology written by Norman Levitt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the possibility of extending the notions of "Grassmannian" and "Gauss map" to the PL category. They are distinguished from "classifying space" and "classifying map" which are essentially homotopy-theoretic notions. The analogs of Grassmannian and Gauss map defined incorporate geometric and combinatorial information. Principal applications involve characteristic class theory, smoothing theory, and the existence of immersion satifying certain geometric criteria, e.g. curvature conditions. The book assumes knowledge of basic differential topology and bundle theory, including Hirsch-Gromov-Phillips theory, as well as the analogous theories for the PL category. The work should be of interest to mathematicians concerned with geometric topology, PL and PD aspects of differential geometry and the geometry of polyhedra.
Book Synopsis Partial Regularity for Harmonic Maps and Related Problems by : Roger Moser
Download or read book Partial Regularity for Harmonic Maps and Related Problems written by Roger Moser and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a collection of results pertaining to the partial regularity of solutions to various variational problems, all of which are connected to the Dirichlet energy of maps between Riemannian manifolds, and thus related to the harmonic map problem. The topics covered include harmonic maps and generalized harmonic maps; certain perturbed versions of the harmonic map equation; the harmonic map heat flow; and the Landau-Lifshitz (or Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert) equation. Since the methods in regularity theory of harmonic maps are quite subtle, it is not immediately clear how they can be applied to certain problems that arise in applications. The book discusses in particular this question.
