Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Land of the Strays, sequel to The Land of the Pines, is a new instant classic about the battle for self-worth and the difference between wants and needs. There is no guarantee that life will be better on the other side. Even still, we all face moments that force us to choose whether to stay where we are or take a massive leap of faith. These moments move quickly yet feel eternal, and they forever change the course of our lives. Just ask Grey the Kitten. Grey didn’t know when she leapt through the gate to leave Black Mountain Farm that she’d meet a Labrador who could hear the inner thoughts of other animals. Grey had no idea that she’d bear witness to a kidnapping or that her newfound friends would test her loyalty on the Trinity Trails. She had no clue that she was jumping into an epic battle that would alter the future of everyone around her. Grey didn’t leave her beloved farm and friends behind for any of these reasons. She left because it was her destiny. Now Grey must decide whose side she’s really on: the leashes or the strays. The leashes live at the Argos, a high-rise building named after the dog of an ancient warrior. From a poncho-clad Poodle to a rhinestone-born Bengal, the leashes seem to have everything they could ever want. But at the Argos, nothing is what it seems. In stark contrast, the strays belong to a different class: the “Stray Club.” The first rule among the leashes is that you don’t talk to or about the Stray Club. Grey’s never been good at following the rules. The Land of the Strays inspires audiences of all ages to see beyond stereotypes, engage with empathy, and connect as a united front. This fantasy tale addresses complex topics including mind chatter and false narrative to combat social media pressures and remind readers that the battle for self-worth is universal, fought by all, and rooted in the power of words. The Land of the Strays is dedicated to the US military and frontline responders, honoring the men, women and animals who serve our country every day. A portion of sales from the Loodor Tales Series, featuring The Land of the Pines and The Land of the Strays, benefits Operation Kindness, celebrating 45 years of saving homeless pets.

Book excerpt: The water tower stood brooding over the cemetery in East Arcadia as if it resented what had transpired, without its permission, beneath it. Here Harley had lost his mask and his symbolic identity, and by extension, mine as well, thereby beginning our fool's errand of retrieval. And just beyond the bend of the horizon stood the skeletal remains of the Way Keepers Spiritual Center, where our odyssey had ended in an all-too-literal trial by fire. Surrounded by immutable reminders of our journey, it struck me that I had been guilty, as Harley had pointed out, of safely observing rather than taking an active part in the world around me. Harley had accused me of bench-warming my way through life at the masque in Atlantic City. "You gotta get out there and see the world," he said, "not just read about it." Harley's easy smile hadn't changed since kindergarten, and we had been inseparable since. Our third grade teacher called us the Dynamic Duo, though I later thought the Odd Couple made more sense-Harley the extroverted white athlete and I the introverted black bookworm-but I had been grateful for her convenient color blindness, and for her open-minded acceptance, something sadly lacking in our classmates from the largely-white, conformist suburb of Arcadia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A different cat book. "May this book help you to always be a guardian, one who guards, protects, cares for, and defends your feline companion." Author Tilly Anger approaches the guardian concept with stories, examples, and resources that provide the reader with insights, knowledge, humor, and valuable tips on caring for your feline companion. Visit Wintergreen, a private forest. You'll meet "the masked companions," the Tonkinese cat-children who live at Wintergreen. The first cat-child, Harley, steals hearts and never met a stranger. Colonel A.J. Ramsey is the author's lovable Tonkinese shadow; the shy cat child, the timid love bug who hides his extensive fears with extraordinary bravado. The cat-children who taught their guardians about optimism, and unconditional love, will enchant you, and capture your heart. You'll learn the importance and joy of clawed paws. "Think of clawed paws as providing your feline companion with four wheel drive or independent suspension." DO NOT declaw, as you can teach where to scratch. Stories, examples, and case studies will show you teaching "where to scratch" is easy and fun. You'll learn how to keep your kitten or cat safe, how to prepare for, and manage a feline emergency, and how to be a loving, caring guardian for your feline companion. The author also includes a sensitive and thoughtful chapter on euthanasia. "As a guardian, euthanasia will be one of the most difficult decisions you ever encounter." This chapter will help those who face the difficult decision of euthanasia. It is also appropriate for individuals who would like to console a friend who has lost a pet. The chapter contains frequently asked questions, and sensitive answers, regarding the euthanasia process, burial or cremation, memorials, and etiquette. Note from the author Author's royalties will go towards rescuing unwanted cats, spaying and neutering them, and finding guardians who will provide loving, caring, homes.

The only thing good I have to hold on to is the memory of my steamy one-night stand. Only I had no idea who Eli was… Or that I’d end up working on his movie set. The spark between us threatens to reignite every time we’re near each other. But Eli wants more than just hot sex. He has a daughter and wants a partner in life. I’m seeking answers about my past and trying to plan my future. Commitment is the last thing I want. Yet, I’m unable to resist his pull and his passion. His touch eases the turmoil in my life. His kiss takes me to another place. And the more time I spend with him and his daughter, the harder it becomes to break away. Though when forced to choose between Eli or a chance at a fresh start, I’m not sure I can risk it all for love. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Stokley Ligon's work in bird conservation, habitat protection, and wildlife legislation during the mid-twentieth century is well-documented in his own writing and the writing of others. But hovering in the background of Ligon's life story has always been the rumor of a trip he made alone as a young man in 1913 in which he covered much of New Mexico alone on horseback. Details of the trip had faded into history, and Ligon—a self-effacing man—had never published the story. As it turns out, the trek was Ligon's first job with the US Biological Survey, and it did not go entirely undocumented. The breeding bird population report that eventually resulted from the journey, photographs from glass plate negatives, and—perhaps most enticingly—Ligon's own personal diary from these travels are presented here. Not just a compelling account of the expedition itself, the materials and insights found in this volume also reveal aspects of Ligon's family history, his early interest in wildlife, and the development of the wilderness skills needed to undertake such a survey. Using his original itinerary and handwritten report, the authors of this book revisited many of the places that Ligon surveyed and in a few cases were even able to locate and repeat Ligon's early photographs. Combined with a discussion of the conditions of birds and other wildlife then and now, this volume serves as a useful tool for understanding how wildlife numbers, distribution, and habitats changed in New Mexico over the course of the twentieth century. Birding enthusiasts, historians, naturalists, and even armchair adventurers will all find something to love in this chronicle of a young man from a West Texas ranching family with a driving ambition to be a professional naturalist and writer.

The weekend offers many surprises, including reuniting with her long-lost family who has been split apart by magic. Andi gains access to an ancient library that holds ancient books, scrolls, and artifacts that help her understand many long-standing questions.
