Book Synopsis The Mid-Century Modern Garden by : Ethne Clarke
Download or read book The Mid-Century Modern Garden written by Ethne Clarke and published by Frances Lincoln. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lavishly illustrated exploration of the prevalent architecture and landscaping style of the mid-century period (c.1940-1970) and its links with modern-day living, this sumptuous garden design book features examples of contemporary interpretations of the style as well as expert advice and tips on how you can achieve the style for yourself. In the second half of the twentieth century, outdoor living was born. Even modest homes were open plan with large picture windows that brought the outside in - and a deck or platform was the perfect answer to extending living outdoors. These lived-in spaces were easy to maintain with their limited plant palette and focus on structure and hard landscaping. They offered a space in which to relax and enjoy valuable leisure time, a pursuit that is as relevant now as it was then. Contrast was the design dynamic - a response to the energy that was fuelled by people's hope for a bright future after the Second World War. Outdoors this translated into a lively interplay of textures and colours between hardscaping materials, pieces of outdoor art and striking specimen plants. The first part of this seminal book charts the evolution of the MCM aesthetic starting with Frank Lloyd Wright's 'Usonion' houses and finishing with Cliff May's ranch houses looking at spaces outside and within and design influences from Europe. The second part focuses on classic and contemporary interpretations of the style in exceptional gardens from all over the world. It offers a unique insight into this period of seismic shift in garden design and will be a rich source of inspiration for garden makers today.

Although many books are now available for this region, gardeners frequently return to A Southern Garden for inspiration. More than eighty years later, Lawrence's information is still fresh, her style of writing still delightful. She not only gives practical advice but manages to convey what it is about gardening that draws so many people to it. This new edition of A Southern Garden will be treasured by all who love gardens and good writing.

Book Synopsis This Gardening Life by : Jonathan Sturm
Download or read book This Gardening Life written by Jonathan Sturm and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Sturm's "... blog is unusual in that, although chockablock with his opinions, it's not overwhelmingly about him. Instead, his focus is on ideas. And what a range of interests he has - from Tasmania's electoral system to food, from software to building a house of steel." So said ABC Radio's Richard Aedy in 2002. So when Jonathan finally fulfilled his promise of finishing his second book on gardening, you might expect it to be a little different to most gardening books. And you'd not be wrong... This Gardening Life contains the accurate, concise and useful information you need to grow vegetables organically, and above all successfully. But this is a Sturm's eye view of not just gardening, but living the Good Life. Jonathan is a Stoic with wide-ranging interests and a mind that sees connections specialists tend to miss. For example, growing plants affects the environment in ways we don't usually pay attention to. So Jonathan includes climatic effects of fertiliser use. Like his previous and very successful book, Complete Organic Gardening (1992), This Gardening Life includes useful illustrations and a host of tabular data usually only found by consulting multiple sources. Warning: This book contains graphic and explicit descriptions of traditional horticultural practises, including seed-sowing, harvesting, cultivation of the soil and weed control.

Great Gardens of London is a captivating photographic portrait of the greatest gardens of the capital which are primarily closed to the public or rarely open their gates. It will feature gardens designed by some of the leading contemporary garden designers from across the world. Accompanying the photographs will be essays on the design and planting that explain the designers' inspiration and passion.
