Book excerpt: Safety-critical real-time systems must guarantee correct operation in all operational conditions - even if these conditions are very unlikely to occur (rare events). Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) simulation is a common validation technique of real-time systems. In an HiL simulation the environment of a System-Under-Test (SUT) is simulated by an assigned HiL simulator. Thereby, the SUT interacts with the HiL simulator in real-time which necessitates a model of time and interfaces of the HiL simulator that are identical to the model of time and the interfaces of the SUT. In this book an HiL simulation framework is proposed that allows predictable interaction of a distributed HiL simulator and an SUT. This HiL simulation framework comprises configurable simulation components which are interconnected via a time-triggered interaction mechanism. Information flow between the HiL simulator and the SUT is strictly controlled by the progression of synchronized global time and bound to a priori known latency and jitter. This book addresses researchers and engineers in safety-critical domains such as the avionics or automotive industries.

The HIL approach allows an engineer to build a physical system incrementally by enabling real components of the system to seamlessly interface with simulated components. It also permits testing of hardware prototypes of components that would be extremely costly to test in the deployed environment. Key issues are the ability to wrap the systems of equations (such as Partial Differential Equations) describing the deployed environment into real-time software models, provide low synchronization overhead between the hardware and software, and reduce reliance on proprietary platforms. This thesis introduces an open source HIL simulation framework that can be ported to any standard Unix-like system on any shared-memory multiprocessor computer, requires minimal operating system scheduler controls, provides a soft real-time guarantee for any constituent simulation that does likewise, enables an asynchronous user interface, and allows for an arbitrary number of secondary control components"--Abstract, leaf iii

It includes some support for real-time operation but not enough to allow hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) testing. This project added realtime monitoring capabilities to CSF and demonstrated its use for a HWIL simulation. The demonstration involved driving a motion simulator table at the Redstone Technical Test Center in Huntsville, AL. The project successfully showed the effectiveness of CSF in a real-time HWIL environment.

Book excerpt: "Control systems are found in many aspects of modern life. From household appliances such as computer controlled ovens and refrigerators to complex missile defense systems, the popularity and importance of automated controllers has grown exponentially over the past few decades. This thesis proposes to develop a simulation framework that can be used in the development of such digital control systems in academic environments. Control Systems Design is a common subject for engineering students world-wide. Many tools exist to help students design and simulate digital controllers, such as MATLAB and SIMULINK, but actually implementing and testing a designed controller is important as well. Students learn far more from their studies when the y have an actual laboratory experiment to help relate the abstract concepts of engineering to the real life design problems. A number of simplified physical systems such as the inverted pendulum and digital servo are common in academic environments, but designing controllers for more practical systems is difficult due to the prohibitive costs associated with the equipment involved. Most simulation frameworks readily available for students focus on the controller itself. They aid in design of the controller's mathematical model, but do not aid in physically testing the actual implementation of the controller. The Control System Plant Simulator will simulate the object a digital control system designer wishes to control -- referred to as a 'Plant.' The Control System Plant Simulator follows the Hardware-in-the-loop concept in that it takes the place of a physical plant. Designed and implemented controllers are attached to the Control System Plant Simulator, which will behave just as an actual plant will from the viewpoint of the controller. The simulator will read input from a digital controller external to the host computer of the simulator. It will evaluate the input in real-time, and provide output to the digital controller just as the actual plant will. The Control System Plant Simulator can be used to aid in the development of control systems. Individuals can use the tool to prototype control systems without being forced to use expensive or limited physical resources. This can reduce production costs of control systems, and make possible more realistic control systems development in academic environments where resources are more limited. This allows for the education of the next generation of control system designers and implementers in a more realistic setting"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: As Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) become more prevalent, there is a need for a system capable of the rigorous evaluation of new ITS strategies for a wide variety of applications. Pre-deployment testing and fine-tuning of the system, performance evaluation, and alternatives analysis are all potential benefits that could be gained through the evaluation of ITS. Simulation, an increasingly popular tool for transportation analysis, would seem an ideal solution to this problem as it allows for the consideration of many scenarios that may be improbable or impossible to observe in the field. Also, simulation provides a framework that allows for the application of rigorous analysis techniques to the output data, providing an accurate and statistically significant conclusion. The difficulty is that many ITS strategies are difficult or impossible to implement in a simulated environment. The rapid nature of technology development and the complicated nature of many ITS solutions are difficult to emulate in simulation models. Furthermore, the emulation of a particular ITS solution is not guaranteed to provide the same result that the physical system would, were it subject to the same inputs. This study seeks to establish a framework for the analysis of advanced ITS applications through the use of Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation (HILS), which provides a procedure for interfacing simulation models with real-world hardware to conduct analysis. This solution provides the benefits of both advanced ITS evaluation and simulation for powerful and accurate analysis. A framework is established that includes all the steps of the modeling process including construction, validation, calibration, and output analysis. This ensures that the process surrounding the HILS implementation is valid so that the results of the evaluation are accurate and defendable. Finally, a case study of the application of the developed framework to the evaluation, a real-world implementation of an advanced ITS application (SCATS in this case) is considered. The effectiveness of the framework in creating and evaluating a corridor using a simulation model wed to real-world hardware is shown. The results of the analysis show the power of this method when correctly applied and demonstrate where further analysis could expand upon the proposed procedure.

Different design stages for such a complex system include evaluation using models and submodels, hardware-in-the-loop systems and complete vehicles. Once a vehicle is delivered to the market evaluation continues by the public. One kind of tool that can be used during many stages of a vehicle lifecycle is driving simulators. The use of driving simulators with a human driver is commonly focused on driver behavior. In a high fidelity moving base driving simulator it is possible to provide realistic and repetitive driving situations using distinctive features such as: physical modelling of driven vehicle, a moving base, a physical cabin interface and an audio and visual representation of the driving environment. A desired but difficult goal to achieve using a moving base driving simulator is to have behavioral validity. In other words, A driver in a moving base driving simulator should have the same driving behavior as he or she would have during the same driving task in a real vehicle.". In this thesis the focus is on high fidelity moving base driving simulators. The main target is to improve the behavior validity or to maintain behavior validity while adding complexity to the simulator. One main assumption in this thesis is that systems closer to the final product provide better accuracy and are perceived better if properly integrated. Thus, the approach in this thesis is to try to ease incorporation of such systems using combinations of the methods hardware-in-the-loop and distributed simulation. Hardware-in-the-loop is a method where hardware is interfaced into a software controlled environment/simulation. Distributed simulation is a method where parts of a simulation at physically different locations are connected together. For some simulator laboratories distributed simulation is the only feasible option since some hardware cannot be moved in an easy way. Results presented in this thesis show that a complete vehicle or hardware-in-the-loop test laboratory can successfully be connected to a moving base driving simulator. Further, it is demonstrated that using a framework for distributed simulation eases communication and integration due to standardized interfaces. One identified potential problem is complexity in interface wrappers when integrating hardware-in-the-loop in a distributed simulation framework. From this aspect, it is important to consider the model design and the intersections between software and hardware models. Another important issue discussed is the increased delay in overhead time when using a framework for distributed simulation.
