Book Synopsis Condensed Matter: Disordered Solids by : Toshio Itami
Download or read book Condensed Matter: Disordered Solids written by Toshio Itami and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-08-31 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with different aspects of the structure and properties of disordered materials. Whenever the normal state of matter is affected by internal or external agencies and new states are developed, it is generally observed that the new materials possess disordered structures. However, some characteristics (such as the electronic and ionic) remain similar to those of crystalline solids. Such isotropic materials are also termed disordered solids. This book surveys the physics of materials like non transition-transition metals and alloys in their solid and liquid phases, liquid-amorphous solids and materials with super structures like fullerene lattices etc. The advancements in these materials which possess unusual physical properties provide exciting possibilities for technology and industry. Up-to-date investigations about theoretical and experimental techniques are presented here. The reviews on different materials were prepared by renowned experts in the corresponding areas.

Book Synopsis Perturbation Theories for the Thermodynamic Properties of Fluids and Solids by : J. R. Solana
Download or read book Perturbation Theories for the Thermodynamic Properties of Fluids and Solids written by J. R. Solana and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-03-22 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Perturbation Theories for the Thermodynamic Properties of Fluids and Solids, provides a comprehensive review of current perturbation theories—as well as integral equation theories and density functional theories—for the equilibrium thermodynamic and structural properties of classical systems. Emphasizing practical applications, the text avoids complex theoretical derivations as much as possible. It begins with discussions of the nature of intermolecular forces and simple potential models. The book also presents a summary of statistical mechanics concepts and formulae. In addition, it reviews simulation techniques, providing background for the performance analyses of theories executed throughout the text using simulation data. Chapters describe integral equation theories, theoretical approaches for hard-sphere fluid or solid systems, and perturbation theories for simple fluids and solids for monocomponent and multicomponent systems. They also cover density functional theories for inhomogeneous systems and perturbative and nonperturbative approaches to describe the structure and thermodynamics of hard-body molecular fluids. The final chapter examines several more challenging systems, such as fluids near the critical point, liquid metals, molten salts, colloids, and aqueous protein solutions. This book offers a thorough account of the available equilibrium theories for the thermodynamic and structural properties of fluids and solids, with special focus on perturbation theories, emphasizing their applications, strengths, and weaknesses. Appropriate for experienced researchers as well as postgraduate students, the text presents a wide-ranging yet detailed view and provides a useful guide to the application of the theories described.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did we have in mind when in May, 1976, we (Professor de Gennes, Dr. Tourand and ourselves) thought of a Summer School in the field of liquids? First, we wanted to present and discuss the new results that have been obtained recently, in particular at the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble since it became operational in 1972. In order to achieve this goal, the major part of this Summer School was devoted to an ex tensive presentation of the gen~ra1 concepts and methods of study ing this state of matter (time-dependent correlation functions, molecular dynamics, intermolecular forces, spectroscopic tech niques ••• ) and concentrated on a few specific systems which have seen significant development in the last few years, both theoret ically and experimentally. These systems are the different classes of simple liquids: metallic liquids, ionic liquids, simple molecu lar liquids and the new field of superionic conductors (solid electrolytes). Furthermore, we wanted to put some emphasis on a particular research area in the field of liquids, namely critical phenomena in fluids. This was chosen both because of our personal interest in this field and the major theoretical advances which have occurred in the last ten years. We also wished that some new powerful techniques or new theo retical approaches be presented at this School. Thus, picosecond laser techniques, theoretical calculations on dipolar fluids, and angular correlations in molecular liquids were the subject of specific seminars.
Book Synopsis Introduction to the Theory of Liquid Metals by : T. E. Faber
Download or read book Introduction to the Theory of Liquid Metals written by T. E. Faber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-08-26 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1972 book brings together the results of a decade of research into the physics of liquid metals and alloys, a subject of growing interest to physicists, metallurgists and materials scientists at the time. It covers a wide range of phenomena, and for the benefit of newcomers to the field, Dr Faber provides a clear exposition of the physical properties involved, and the relevant theoretical arguments are developed in sufficient detail for an experimentalist who carries rather little in the way of mathematical equipment to follow them. Experienced researchers will appreciate Dr Faber's critical approach and the many previously unpublished results which he has included. The mass of experimental data which he has brought together and the comprehensive bibliography will make the book of great use to readers of both classes.

Book Synopsis Structural Thermodynamics of Alloys by : J. Manenc
Download or read book Structural Thermodynamics of Alloys written by J. Manenc and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technical progress has for a very long time been directly dependent on progress in metallurgy, which is itself connected with improvements in the technology of alloys. Metals are most frequently used in the form of alloys for several reasons: the quantity of pure metal in its native state in the earth's crust is very limited; pure metals must be extracted from ores which are themselves impure. Finally, the methods of treatment used lead more easily to alloys than to pure metals. The most typical case is that of iron, where a pure ore may be found, but which is the starting point for cast iron or steel, alloys of iron and carbon. In addition, the properties of alloys are in general superior to those of pure metals and modem metallurgy consists of controlling these properties so as to make them conform to the requirements of the design office. Whilst the engineer was formerly compelled to adapt his designs and constructions to the materials available, such as wood, stone, bronze, iron, cast iron and ordinary steels, he can now expect, due to metallurgical research, the creation of special alloys meeting specific requirements. These requirements must of course be reasonable, but VIII INTRODUCTION must be sufficiently imperative for them to become the motive for progress.
